VETERAN

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Please take a minute or two today and thank those who their gave their life for a cause greater than themselves.

The pages of human history are full of humans engaging in sacrifices for the whole. Not to say that veterans sacrifices were in vain in any way, but that is the nature of humans. Humans take for granted most everything.

Of all the people who fought wars, fought injustice, or fought for civil rights or some form of equality, there were actually a small number of people who were true believers. What I mean by true believers are people who passionately believed in the cause in which they were/are fighting for. They knew the risks and they gladly got involved. The others, the rest who put themselves and their lives on the line were people who did it because of society or their family’s expectations of them. Then there are the ones who go in and lay their lives on the line for a ‘possible’ future if they survive, with the government paying for their educations so they can have a good start in life. Some people go to war and fight and die just so they can have 3 squares a day. They believed in no cause except for just having something to do, getting fed, and to feel a part of something bigger than themselves.

Every year we go through this. Memorial Day, and Veteran’s Day, and every year it’s the same. The Vet’s don’t feel appreciated. Some vet who most likely went through hell and back is reminding all of us to pay our respects, which on a human level is understandable. Well most people can’t see it because they never cared nor never even thought outside their own life’s struggles. People have a nasty tendency of dealing with what’s in front of them. Rather harsh to put it this way but there is a measure of truth in what I say.

In a perfect world we who are alive today owe plenty of gratitude to the ones who laid their lives down for us in the past, but in reality, it was the responsibility of those in the past to ensure our continued way of life and survival. We owe them nothing, but we DO owe the next generation of humans their opportunity for life, happiness and freedom, and they shall be equally thankless and we should not expect a pat on the back.

When I think of Memorial Day, I think of not just all the people who have died in combat, I think of all the cops, firemen, doctors, and just your average people who make it their personal responsibility to place themselves in between myself, and hardship. The guy who coming out of a bar sees another guy slapping a women around in a parking lot, who goes and puts a stop to it at the risk of bodily harm. Hero, and now I can move on and live my life. I don't owe him, but I'm glad he was there. You get the idea.

I guess what I’m saying in a nutshell is that we don’t owe the past, we owe the future if that makes any sense. Now for another glass of wine. I think I’ll watch some BTVS now
