Okay this thread is dedicated to the big question of personality types.

Are you a Central Core person or an Outer Rim person? Simple enough.

Some of you people will see this as attention whoring, but I think this topic fits within the realm of the Firefly ‘verse so I will start with myself.

I’m a Core individual. I like to have access to technology and instant gratification. I like comfort, and I like to know that the law has a strong hand in the environment that I’m in. I feel comfortable in an environment like this and that is what the core worlds are like. The drawbacks are that a little freedom has to be exchanged for this comfort which I am willing to part with.

What about all of you?

Good question. While I do like my creature comforts (especially my computer and CD player), I think I'd like living out on the Rim. The wide open spaces just kind of calls to me. And besides, having been poor most of my life, I'm used to going without.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Definitely an Outer Rim person.

I grew up in the country, so I was used to working on a farm, growing things in the garden, being away from people and the rat race of the city. Like most Outer Rim kids I couldn't wait to see the Core. Got my fill of it and now I can't wait to return to the Rim.

There is also my whole aversion to authority, big government, and their meddling in my life.

The simple life for me please.

I'd prefer the Rim. I think that's why I like Firefly so much; there's less official authority, the government isn't in your business, and there's opportunity to make a little money.

I look at the Core a lot like New York City. I love to visit, see my friends, and hang out. But I also love knowing that I can leave...

So I guess my final answer would be that I'd like a decent ship to get me in between whenever I like.

Time for some thrilling heroics.

Interesting question,

It's a hard one tho, 'cus there's people perception of themselvs & the reality. for example, over the course of my 40 something years I've lived in the remote, no running water, heat with wood & lots 'o trees in the backyard AND in downtown urban situations. So it's not so much how do you see yourself but what where are you living now?

Personaly, I like mid way. For some odd reason I like running water & a high speed internet connection. But a bunch of my aquatances(sp?) live off the grid and there is something to be said about that especially if a disaster hits.

I would have to considered an Outer Rim person i suppose... and mainly because in the real world i do live in a remote, sparsely populated region of the country. I'm not against technology by any means, and do my best to stay up on the latest developments in all tech related fields... Ok, probably more information than you were asking for, but I feel the need to add a caveat or addendum to my last post…
The question you asked really gets to the heart of who we are, so I would like to be truthful in my answer. I’m sticking with Outer Rim guy, but must admit I enjoy many of the advantages of your Core world. I’ve never really fit in with my peer group here in the wilds of Rim Dom, but I remain here for reasons too numerous to list.
However, I often envy the vast array of choices that the Core has to offer. The theatre, museums, galleries and educational facilities come to mind. Also, the ability to interact with the diversity of personalities of a larger population is something I miss out here.
So, maybe I’m trying to have the best of both worlds. I will remain on the edge, but I’ll also sneak into the metropolis now and again for a really good dinner and maybe a Broadway musical… or even the opera… hell, I may even put on a tie.

Living here on the edge of the Core. Most likely the best place for me.

Small town (pop 10,000)on the water with all the amenities-ie high speed internet, plumbing, AC etc. and I know most of my customers at work by name. The Core is coming this way though and I don't know if I like it.

A waterfront piece of property here just sold for $9.5 MILLION! Condos and waterfront homes are planned for the Core types looking to retire down South.

The Rim is close by though-if you go 60 miles from here you can have no one within a mile of you, yet I'm 30 minutes the other way from a university town with shops, resaurants etc and 2 hours from one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

I like to go to Raleigh for fun but wouldn't like to live there like my brother. The pace, traffic,cost of living, pressure etc. is too much.

I am a Core person. I love my big city (I live right near San Francisco) and wouldn't want to miss out on all that goes on there, but I do like getting away from the crowds sometimes. Do they have camping on the Outer Rim?

Or maybe a middle world, is there a planet a little more sophisticated than Persephone but not as rigid as say Ariel, Osiris, or Sihnon? I'd probably go there, where ther are conviences but not as stuffy as the Central Planets.

Outer Rim, all the way. The amenities of living in "civilisation" are great, definitely, but I'd much, much rather live in a rural area. I can really only be in cities for a few days before I get itching to go, and I hate being in them at night. I love the quiet of living out in the country and independence that comes with it. The Core would just be too busy and noisy for me.

A slight bit back from the Outer Rim - but closer to the Outer Rim than to the Core. Government is something created by people, and tasked with the admin work of society. The freedoms given up to live under a government should be the same as the freedoms given up to live in a small communal group: you don't shit in the water supply, you don't take other peoples' stuff, you don't go around stealing them in the face for no reason. Help when someone asks, if you're able. Treat others with respect. Take responsibility for yourself and for your actions. And don't ever fall into the trap of thinking that you know what's best for anyone who is not your own minor-age child.

The Core is, in some ways, just a tiny bit too close to permanent childhood. A gilded cage is still a cage.

I spent a few years in the Peace corp. when I was younger back in the day. I went and worked in some pretty desolated places, but none of those places held a candle to the constant, war-torn environments that they kept sending us too. The group I was in was into building homes out of anything, and creating actual gardens that could support a whole family. I don’t know how the Peace Corp operate today, but back then, you had to be prepared to live like the people you were helping. We were pretty good at that. I also lived with and helped people who were just struggling to get by on the most basic necessities, so I pretty much got a taste of what some of the Outer Rim planets might look like, but live there out of choice in my older age? I don’t think I could do that.

I sometimes actually miss those years doing service for other people, but no more...not the same person. I've been too long in the world of money to want to go hunting for my own food in the bush, or living in a hut somewhere. In the Outer Rim areas, you can’t order pizza.

Living off the grid is good sometimes, but too much of anything gets old fast.

Although I am a browncoat,do like wide open spaces(including the black),fresh air,freedom and running the Llamas a bit on a ranch on planet Beaumont (thats Beaumont with a T, not D. It's a bitty moon) I do visit the core quite often.

I love my tv,computer,cd player and dvd player (how else could I watch FF) and then theres the relaxing idea of having a hospital a 5 minute drive from home. I do put my purplebelly shoes on from time to time and live among the unified folk a bit.But they don't know the real me ha..ha..ah < independent laugh here.
