does it really matter where you buy your copy of serenity from? or will people buying from the same suppliers make a difference?

Where you buy it doesn't make a difference, unless you want a bit of the sale to be donated to help Haken keep this site going, then click on the link on the home page. But for overall number purposes, no it doesn't matter if you order from Amazon.whatever, discount.whatever or walk into your local dvd selling-type store...it ALL counts.

I may be wrong on this...If it is bought from a major retailer the figures come faster and more accurately. Another benefit of buying from someone like amazon is they keep a top 25 list that is widely read.

Surely co-ordinated purchases from bigger retailers would definately work better, like the amazon.com link?

Think about it, if 10,000 people by a copy from 100 different stores, the figures won't be as amazing as 10,000 purchases as 2-3 bigger ones.

Would also be a good idea to make sure the amazon.com top 25 list, which hopefully the series will be high on *fingers crossed* (or from other online sites) are actually sent to Fox/Uiversal/whatever. Need to make sure they actually see the message we're sending, and amazon/etc themselves may not necissarily report unusually high sales to Fox/Universal/whoever we're targetting.

Not really wanting to be the one to throw a wet towel into this whole affair, but I think that this whole June 23rd thing is a big waste of money and time. All you will end up doing is making some stores a little bit richer. Another movie or TV show cannot come from this.

I've watched all of the available Joss interviews and this is what I've notice. Every time, and I mean EVERYTIME serenity 2 or Firefly is mentioned, Joss gives a slight flinch. A flinch that suggests that this is something that he really doesn’t want to talk about. A flinch that says he's guilty of something. A flinch that suggests that this is something he won't get off his back ever.

I am SO glad I'm not him. The guy clearly wants to write and direct, he didn’t realize that he would end up creating cult classics like Firefly and Buffy so early in his career, and now these very shows are coming back to bite him in the ass in the form of fans, harassing him at every turn. It is clear that this guy really wants to move on in his life. He actually looks and acts like he wished he never created FF. He only stands in front of those cameras, and goes to those interviews because WE want him too.

I think he has other ideas for movies and TV shows that he wants to move on too, but the Serenity/FF monkey will be on his back forever as long as he lives, and I think that he's starting to really see that now. It’s rare that young writers and directors get a super hit from the start. Giving us Serenity should have calmed us down so he thought, but it made it worse. We will always want more. We are fans, of course we want more. We want to suck the orange called firefly dry of all of its juices.

Go to any interview that Joss's done in the past year and really watch. The mention of FF or Serenity, he flinches and starts looking really nervous about something. He starts looking and acting put upon. The actors want to do Serenity and Firefly because I believe that they actually enjoy the show themselves, and it pays the bills on top of it, and they are popular with people like us, but Joss….poor Joss. Poor, poor Joss. I feel so sorry for the guy.

Better him than me I always say.

I know I'm right.

If there's one thing that watching the series/movie tells any fan, its that a single-minded belief is an extremely dangerous thing :)
Especially when those beliefs have the inevitable implication that others are wrong, and are wrong to think they way they do.

And to roughly quote Book, cradling his torn up bible, its not about facts, its about faith ;)

I don't know that I'm right, but I know that the fact that I don't is infinately more comforting to me than a forced belief that I am.

Point well taken. I just thought I would report my observations. I know I'm right, but then again, I have been wrong about certain events...from time to time. But I will still say this...poor Joss. He won't ever be able to live down Firefly and it will haunt him till the day he dies.

Joss may flinch, but that could mean something different than your interpretation. Serenity and Firefly are a difficult subject for him because of the pain involved with all the loss and work surrounding a project he dearly loves.

Joss does want the 'Verse to go on, but he's prevented from doing so right now... so of course he feels bad. It's a frustrating, helpless feeling to want to continue and be prevented from doing so. Movies and TV series are expensive things, he has to have a studio to back him up. If he could do this on his own, he'd love to.

In a VERY recent interview with Joss, he still says he wants to continue Serenity. There are excerpts from this interview in a video on the SciFi channel website stating this. Here is a tanscript from the portion where Joss talks about Serenity:
_______________________________________

FROM THE VIDEO:

SciFi Wire Presents an Exclusive Interview with Joss Whedon on Serenity and Wonder Woman

(Scenes from Serenity are shown- end of bank heist and Reaver chase. Joss appears to be interviewed outside some event. Questions to Joss are not heard, but can be deduced by his responses.)

"Well, I don't know if we made the kind of money that entails sequels or any such thing... uh, I sit by my phone..."

"Um, I would certainly love to. We're gonna do another comic, but that doesn't let me work with the actors, which is what I really want to do."

"Um, I never rule it out... I always keep my hope alive. But the fact of the matter is, right now, it's doubtful."

http://www.scifi.com/pulse/
_______________________________________

Sure, in the last sentence he expresses some doubt about continuing... but he's talking about "right now". We are in a lull because the box office returns for Serenity weren't blockbuster numbers, so future plans got put on the back burner. However, Serenity made its money back and the DVDs continue to sell well. Sometimes things have to sit for a bit so people can regroup. Also, Joss was obligated to fulfill contractual work, and he needed to get working on scripts and other projects. Doesn't mean he left Serenity behind forever, just that he had to get working on other things. He always has tons of ideas and he loves to keep busy.

Anyway, the other parts of the interview are pretty clear, and he's used the term before, he's "sitting by his phone"... meaning he is still quite open to making more Serenity. But now it's a case of he needs to be the one approached. He fought very hard to get Serenity made. Now the next incarnation must be in the form of an offer to him. I'm thinkin' he's gonna let the fandom and DVD sales speak for themselves, one way or the other.

Joss also said that doing a Serenity comic is not the same thing as working with the actors... and I quote him, "... which is what I really want to do."

I don't know how much clearer he can be. He still really wants to create more Serenity with the original cast.

The people who made Serenity want to do more, and the fans want more. If we don't give up then there will be more from the 'Verse.

Keepin' the faith, and still holdin'

Getting back to the original question,...

I'm really surprised that the organisers of this publicity stunt (let's be frank), have not suggested that we all use Amazon.

Diluting our purchases ensures the effort of this community will be wasted. And targeting it where its results are invisible to us is doubly silly.

I would go with Amazon for one reason - their publically accessible and near immediate sales ranking mechanism. (the fact that they probably have the best price and are international helps too!)

Purchase statistics at bricks and mortar stores are; 1) probably aggregated over accounting periods of a week or month 2) invisible to us.

Also, as far as I understand, the final daily/weekly sales figures that end up at the studios studios are very closely guarded.

We should want to know how the effort went, not only for self gratification (in our bunks), but so that we can mention hard figures of our success in future promotions.

And no, I don't own amazon stock - not that a few thousand browncoats would budge the share price.

So, here I am, surprised this no brainer wasn't a central guiding principle of the operation. Just because F*X make a mess of publicising the BDS doesn't mean we have to follow suit. Unless deep down we all feel the verse is just fated to be a tragic tale ;-)

As far as I know, the dictum was get them every way you can.
If you wanna use Amazon, shiny. It's easy, and it gets Serenity a higher rank.
If you want to support the little DVD shop on the corner, shiny, too - all numbers will eventually be reported to Universal, and the small shops are more likely to advertise it some more when they see that it's worth stirring interest.
Besides, I for one am reluctant to give all my money to the huge companies who don't really need it.
Ultimately, you buy multiple copies from multiple sources.
Depending on how Serenity Day on June 23rd goes, we're gonna adjust those dictums for the Serenity 'Versary buying frenzy on September 30th accordingly.

But since the day is being organised by a different crew, better ask THEM to be sure.

Hey you ain't one of those 'innapendants' are you?

All I'm suggesting is that we make SerenityDay a sort of Unification day. Bring a little order to the outskirts of out little verse. What could be wrong with that!

Giving to mom and pop stores so they can look to little jimmy's damp lung is noble as a grape an' all,....

Seriously though, WE won't know how SD went to adjust for September unles we go through an outfit that publishes the results openly. (besides some folk might chose Wal*Mart, in which case they might as well buy their blue latex gloves there at the same time)

MuscularButtocks, I'm not sure if you were here about a month ago, but there is a bit of a division in the ranks. Not saying that's bad, but here's how the situation stands.
(11th Hour, Agatsu, please tell me if I have any of this wrong)

The folks here on the forum are doing the Serenity Summer Campaign. We'll have various events planned throughout the summer, culminating in the Serenity 'Versary on September 30th.

The Browncoat Army is headed by Kaele, who is organizing Serenity Day on June 23rd. As Agatsu said earlier in the thread, head on over to http://www.serenityday.org for more information.

**************************************************

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

Hi DEEPGIRL187

I missed that. I'm a 1 month old browncoat. Can't remember much before that!
Thanks for the Info, I wasn't aware there was such a focus to these forums. I was just chiming in on the original June 23rd thread, my bad! I guess what I'm sayin' is my mouth is talking and I should look to that. Good luck on the 30th

While one place is good for the big numbers, you will NEVER get everyone to agree to that. There are people out there (and probably on this board) who have been screwed by Amazon and have sworn them off. I know because I have had that happen at certain places. And I don't like to pay shipping on something I can go to Best Buy to get and get reward points on as well. That is where I am going for my Serenity purchase(s). I am hoping to have enough money to buy two or three copies for a few friends to introduce to the Verse as well.

On a cool side note. A friend of mine that I told should watch the series, did. She has it on her hard drive thanks to a co-worker of hers. Originally she said she wasn't going to buy it or the movie because why should she when she could just burn it from the hard drive. She calls me Sat asking what day Serenity day is again. She is now going to buy it and wait until that day. Isn't the movie but at least it's related.

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

What happened? He see your face?

Posted this in Apr...
and I do agree with the summer-long campaigne...
Also, Serenity has all along done well on the A list...but it is now in delcine... here is this sites history... http://www.fireflyfans.net/amazonserenity.asp

A good cycle... but one day of it ranking higher may be negligible compared to a BUZZ created (see below)

I would suggest we do not focus our efforts on Amazon or universal alone.

Why? Well, I think we may get into the minds of Universal for sure by the sheer quantity. But, I think we want to create a buzz. Not only in the entertainment industry but further than that.

If we hit the retail establishment as well; that gets retail execs talking. Even right down to the stock boy who has to put them back on the shelf. To make a news story in our genre of entertainment and beyond it takes someone to present it to an editor/site/magazine. EDIT(Charity Screenings do this) With hitting various sellers/locations across the world we have more people involved and more BUZZ is created. ...and the more BUZZ the more people may buy and the more interesting it is to reporters/article writers... the BUZZ will create more sales...

I know we live in an on-demand world but the major retailers with real-time sku inventory systems have to do daily, weekly or monthly reporting to get to the data across for sales info. Now, they could have daily notifications of sku items that are just performing out of the ordinary. (which I’m sure exists, across all depts.? who knows?) A while back some posted a link about target having Firefly and Serenity in their national sales paper. This is just one of the many examples of the BUZZ reaching those who may not have heard of our BDHs before. Some exec saw some numbers or even liked the show and put it in there. (Along side a limited set of DVDs at that)

Anyone agree?

EDIT: 'course we all know we need the participation for any angle we take

Wha?!?... *sniff sniff* OH.... IM ON FIRE!!!

What's worse, trying something, anything that might work or sitting on your ass saying "wonder what if...nah." Everyday is Browncoat Day around here (Clocktower Comics). I play those DVD's all day and new people are always getting into it and if there was another movie I'm sure it would do better. I think most of the audience was gained post FIREFLY cuz none of us really heard of it. Some things are worth it, some aren't. SERENITY is.

I believe that this is untrue. In the various interviews I've seen, Joss asked FOX if he could keep the rights to the show and they allowed it. It's obvious that the Firefly universe is something special to him, and not a monkey.

Also, Joss admits that he gets asked the same question hundreds of times across all interviews, and so it's a possibility that he grows tired of answering the same question.

Honestly, he didn't realize how much the group of people that would love these characters and the story line so much. The fifteen episodes and the movie we have isnt enough. I would love to know about Shepard Book and know more about Mal. We'll never get that, I dont think Joss wants to go down that road again and it is a shame. But I agree with you about him flinching when it is mentioned. All he wants is to move on and that's admirable but the story of Serenity and the crew will never die. We have them in our hearts.
