Hi folks.This little post ain't totally serenity or FF related but it does kinda have me thinking.

The BDM and Firefly have brought some changes to the Z household in a very good way. Made me a bit more chipper in the mornings and I have to laugh to myself when some "life" occurance happens that I can directly relate a FF quote to.

Anyway,speaking of shows or movies that change your life or the world for that matter I would like to hear about yours. You know something that made you talk,view or react to the world differently. For me I will start off with two big ones.

The Exorcist: made many a bible thumper after seeing that one.

Jaws; Yepper I was scared to even take a bath after that movie. Took showers for a year.

Do you guys have any like these?

I read the Exorcist as an 11 yr old babysitter. The lady had no TV. I read it in one evening (i read fast) and then had to walk home 1 mile in pitch black at 2 am (I didn't want to call my mom, I thought she would be mad)

That book scared the hell (pun intended) out of me. You know when your heart beat sometimes shakes the bed a little? Well my 11 yr old brain read that as the bed levitating and moving as in the book. I couldn't sleep well for YEARS!

I am sure there are others. I will have to give a think.

And for me Serenity has been really helpful through all the crap that calls itself my current life.

I am on The List. We are The Forsaken and we aim to burn!

Yup!

Raiders of the Lost Ark! Until then going to the cinema was something my folks did to keep me quiet for two hours, after this film though, I wanted to be a stuntman, and the next day with my best friend Lee, we set-up a stunt club in school. It entailed throwing ourselves out of trees, mock fighting, but done with style ;P and pretending to dive out the way of giant boulders. It was a hoot! we made badges recruited other kids who wanted in and for the next two years that school rocked. I think there were about 14 of us in the stunt club. It was a good time and I have fond memories as a consequence.

Later on as I sorta matured, it fueled my desire to be a director... and that lead me to draw and doodle and write and y'know I do cartooning for a living now, so guess it had a real impact on me.

(Oh and as a side not. Flash Gordon and in particular Ming's daughter - made me look at girls in a totally different way too.)

Wow, hard question. One that comes to mind at the moment is Labyrinth. When I was a child, it was just the typical kind of movie I would watch. When I got older however, I started to look into some of the deeper meanings in the film. It was one of those "light bulb" type of moments.

While it's obvious for most Browncoats to choose Firefly as life-changing, for me it was (I think) somewhat different. I really enjoyed watching it, and was even moved by some of the moments in the series. And now, whenever I reflect on something from the show, I think of how much it applies to everyday life. But what really did it for me after watching the movie was coming to this site. It was the first time I felt apart of something (excuse me for saying it) great. I never really understood how the love of something as simple as a TV show could unite people. And if it makes other people stare at me like I'm crazy, then so be it. Firefly gives you more than a sense of belonging, it gives you a home.

Okay, over-emotional rant over. Sorry about the fuss.

Ah, another interesting question. :P

Let's see...

Gremlins: Saw that when I was a little kid, and it gave me recurring nightmares for the next two years (as well as my first experience with night terrors :) I still have to sleep with the closet door open (so I can tell if anything is trying to hide in there, of course.)

I'll second DeepGirl187 about Firefly, as well. First time I really felt apart of something bigger than me. (And of course gave me a chance to meet all the shiny people who call this place home. :)

Also, a couple movies together that was sort of my own personal eye-opener: Mad Max, Bladerunner, and Max Headroom. Those sort of got into my head when I was growing up and just stuck there. Would take too many words than I have room for here without writing a novella, though. Long, boring story short; it's around that time I thought I'd rather fancy trying my hand at something like that.

Common thread through all of those picks is that when I get done watching them, my irksome and lumbering muse wakes up for a short period of time, gets me inspired and the like. As if some of the creativity rubs off on me or something. :P

LWAVES

Okay so please don't hate me for this coz there is good reason and shows that some good can come out of big piles of sh*t.

The third Batman movie (Forever??) the one with Val Kilmer in it.

This was the opening movie at out new multi screen cinema down the road. Excitement and anticipation were abdundant. Cinema was fantastic. And the film was total pants.

But it was my first experience of surround sound.
I was enthralled.
I was gobsmacked.
I wanted it.
And I wanted it now.

So I looked around and found out what all the fuss was about (it wasn't widely accepted back then and was only just coming to the public's attention and even then it was seen as a film collectors item).
Within about a month I had my first Pro-Logic setup (no DVD's were around back then) and I was hooked. Invited everyone around to show off proudly.

And so it began....

TRISTAN

One that comes to mind is Silence of the Lambs. Believe it or not, because of that movie, I have a degree in Pyschology. I wanted to find my very own Dr. Hannibal Lecter...haven't so far...never actually used the degree...

The most recent was Serenity. Because of that movie, I discovered Firefly, and my life has not been the same since. I live, breathe, and dream in Firefly...but I guess that is a given. I am sure all the folks here have that one in common.

Ah! I was going to say the same thing. But your's was a positive experience. Mine, not so much.

I saw a picture of Hannibal Lecter while at the dentist's office. He was strapped to the gurney and had his face mask on. I literally slept with the light on for three weeks.

Then, after seeing the movie (and enjoying being scared outta my mind by it), I watched the DVD special features about serial killers. These many years later and I still can't go home without checking closets, showers, behind doors, basically anyplace big enough to hide a human.

Not a good effect, I would say.

Rugbug, I also kept my lights on for awhile...but in the hopes of catching him before he got me!
I did take several classes in abnormal psych, and was fascinated by the things a human mind can become. Still scary, though!

Saw the Exorcist when I was eight or nine, finished the book at eleven I think. A movie that started me on asking strange questions about religion and *air-quote* "God." This further led me to take religious studies (self-taught, though) and save a girl from a horrible life two months ago.

Think I can't say anymore: it was a semi-confession, and although I'm no priest, (or choir-boy, for that matter) I still respect confidentiality.

On the very off-chance you're out there, girl, know that someone won't always be there to pick you up, but you can never leave yourself. And don't forget what I said.

Okay, here's a different angle on a life-changing movie.

I was about 11 when A Hard Day's Night came out. I was a Beatlemaniac and wanted to see it very badly, but my parents refused permission.

So I went anyway, and lied about what movie I'd gone to.

That was the first time I'd defied my parents and lied to them -- or, generally, asserted myself as an individual.

Ironic twist: my friends and I went to a special first-day showing, and it was cram-packed full of screaming girls. I hardly heard any of the movie! I guess that was Karmic justice or something.

I can't claim anything as Psychologically revealing (possibly fortunately for you all).
Most of my life changing media experiences have been with books - my first love.
One called 'No Moon Tonight' was bought at jumble sale for 10p in 1982. It was the story of a man who joined the Australian air force in the war and flew over Germany. It was the idea of people plucked from civilian life to fight a unique type of war that fascinated me and since then I've studied, ahem "Civilian Armies Of the Western English Speaking World". This actually includes all the commonwealth forces, regardless of language or colour for that matter. This covers:
American Civil War
WWI
WWII
Korea
Vietnam
Other Colonial wars.
Thanks to this I've met some ordinary seeming people who contrived astonishing feats of bravery and endurance.
I'm not militaristic and I certainly don't collect guns or aircraft paint codes I'm simply interested in the human condition.

Just to clarify I don't collect anything!

When I was young I saw "The Day Of The Triffids" on BBC telly. Giant mobile flesh eating plants preying on a blinded population.
For weeks afterwards I wouldn't go near any bushes or trees when walking home from school in the dark.

The TV event that stands out in my mind is a real one. That is the attack on New York on Sept 11 2001. I had started my dream job the day before. Anyway as reports came in over the internet I ran for home turned on SKY and went straight for CNN.
I realised that what I saw that day would change the world for ever. Two of my housemates also came home and sat stunned on the sofa. I vividly recall saying in all seriousness that this could be the start of the end of the world.
The fact that we could just switch straight onto CNN and watch what America was seeing was a very odd and powerful feeling but my mind was so jumbled that I have never been able to clarify exactly what itwas that I was feeling.
Enough rambling.
