Any XMEN experts out there?

hey guys,

After resurrecting my interest in xmen by the movies. I found some old VHS tapes of the series that used to air on FOX. I now want to start getting the xmen comics. I know there are thousands but i've got to start somewhere. I also am aware that there are many different story lines. I was wondering if there was any XMEN expert out there that would like to show me a good path to follow when purchasing the comics. I know there are a couple of sets out for sale in PDF format, and i wouldnt mind getting those as well. I just want to soak up the story, but i dont know where to start. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I don't claim to be an expert but I was a fairly avid reader for about ten years.

My first recommendation would be to buy some trade paperbacks instead of individual comics. Reason being since X-men is so popular some of the individual issues are quite expensive while the TPB are fairly cheap and easy to find.

Go with some of the big storylines: The Dark Phoenix Saga, The X-tinction Agenda, and The Executioners Song spring to mind.

As far as writers go snatch up anything written by Chris Claremont. He is perhaps the best writer in comic book history and had an outstanding run while at the helm of X-men.

Check out the Essential editions if you just want to read them. There cheap, but not colored. They only run about 15 bucks for about a 20 issue trade. If you want colored ones, check out the Marvel Masterworks edition. They run around $40 and only have 10 or so issues.

Okay if you want classics check out things like The Dark Pheonix Saga, Complete Age of Apocalypse Essential Series and Marvel MAasterworks. If you want to know what's happening now... four teams X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, New Excalibur, and Astonishing X-Men. Out of those four I suggest New Excalibur (great series and it's just beggining) and Astonishing X-Men(Written by: Joss Whedon and Illustrated by John Cassaday). Another great series is New X-Men: Academy X(Now just New X-men) Although not about the adult X-men it has geat story lines.

bout the same here...

Try to get your hands on the Graphic Novel "God Loves Man Kills" this is excellent.. This kinda breaks down the basic attitude of the first movie... but in my opinion is much better...

Chris Claremont was da man in the evolution of the X-men... You can't go wrong with many of the eighties storylines... just look for the original release date.

A lot of sagas are mentioned already. "The Fall of the Mutants" is one that rocks.. The Mutant Massacre was some kick butt action as well. “Days of Future Past” is also pretty cool

To me, it seemed the nineties, like in most comics of the time, tried to go too big too fast. Huge storyline changes, character intro.s, and just too many titles and crossovers to keep up with. There was some outstanding artwork from one of my favorite artists, Jim Lee, during this period though.

I quit collecting mid nineties. But now with Joss at the helm, I have a subscription. Looks like he is bringing that feel from the eighties back into the books. I prefer the storylines to stay close to home when the X-men are dealing with situations right on the streets of NY or at least Earth. Not inter-dimensional beasts, or space monkeys or whatever. (not that I didn’t like the brood or dark phoenix saga) Storylines like the mutant massacre dealt with a lot of one-on-one battles between mutants. Like Joss’s body of work, there was always a possibility someone was gonna get wacked.
