Darren spoke up "I'll be content in the engine room. I got us a new Harmonic Stabilizer but I couldn't find a new Compression Coil."

Captain Faolin turned to Darren and said "Well just make sure you can keep us running that's all I ask."

Darren nods his head and says "Will do Captain. If anyone needs me I'll be in the engine room."

Darren gets up, nods to the crew that's there and heads off to the engine room to tinker with the new part.

Shanti refilled his coffee cup with a knowing shrug, her tone as close to a well, duh! as a slave's could be, "It's a small part shaped like a donut that stabilizes the harmonic frequencies of the engine. Don't you know that if the harmonics are off by as much as .08, the entire engine could explode?"

"Explode?" Dr. Laup says cautiously, "I don't want to explode."

Captain Faolin grins, "Then it's a good thing we got a good mechanic who can get us the right parts. Now, I'm taking it that means you all are in on the job?"

Meanwhile in the engine room......

Darren had set the new Harmonic Stabilizer down on the work bench on the left side of the engine room and hooked it up to his trusty Diagnostic Computer. He attached several wires to the various ports on the part and selected one of the various diagnostic programs on his computer. He hummed to himself one of the songs his father had taught him, while the diagnostic program ran it's course.

She glances to Captain Faolin, checking that with him and smiles again as he nods. "Then we'll get you something to eat. You must be half-starved!"

She stands for a moment, hands on her hips. "I'll be in the galley, just up those stairs, when you're ready for something to eat."

Darren walked out of the engine room and headed for the galley. He was tinkering with a spare Fuel Injection Regulator as he walked into the galley. He sat down at the table unaware of Shanti standing near the oven and continued tinkering on the F.I.R.

Shanti turned and saw Darren working on a strange looking part, curious she said to him "What are you working on there Darren if you don't mind my asking?"

Darren still focused on the part said "It's a Fuel Injection Regulator. It measures how much fuel gets fed into the engine. This one here is one of the spares. I'm checkin' all the spare parts ta make sure they're all in workin' order."

"Oh ok then I won't bother you then." Shanti said before returning to the oven.

'Fuel injection regulator, regulates fuel to the engine' Shanti repeats silently to herself, committing it to memory as she checks the bread.

Coming back to sit at the table, she looks down at the schematics for the bank job. The words are useless to her, but she tilts her head as she studies the diagrams.

"Darren, sir, I'm sorry to bother you, but what does that say there?"

He glances over the part in his hand, "Secure Maintenance Shaft."

Shanti taps her fingers on the schematic, thinking outloud to herself, "And that's a shuttle dock, probably for private couriers.
And this here is the main entrance... and that's the inner vault."

"If a person were to go in the front doors, through the outter vault, to the inner vault, then they could just take the..." She hesitates as she tries to remember what Darren said, "maintenance security shaft to the shuttle dock..."

"Show ya my security shaft anytime ya want." Gail's voice booms from the door and Shanti stands back from the table, her head dropping subserviently.

Darren heard Gail's comment to Shanti. He cocked his head toward the merc and said "Really Gail I thought ya only liked the menfolk?"

Gail gave Darren a stone cold look and said "Ya better watch yer mouth greasemonkey or else."

"Or else what ya inbred sack of meat?" Darren replied, getting up from his chair, right hand hovering over his .45.

Gail growled "Or else I'll toss yer pigu out the airlock before ya can pull out that pistol boy."

Darren unfazed by the merc's threat replies "Really? I'd like to see ya try go-se for brains."

The two men stare each other down as the two women watch in fear.

She lays a hand on Darren's arm, soothing it gently from his gun, but her eyes are on Gail. She keeps her voice quiet and servile, "Captain Faolin is in charge of this ship. You want me, you talk to him. He says, I do."

"Shanti, you don't have to hump this piece of..." Darren's voice falls off, as she shakes her head pleadingly.

"Same goes for you, sir." She backs away slowly. "You want me, you talk to the Captain."

She hides her shaking hands behind her apron as she moves back into the kitchen and pulls the bread from the oven, pretending it's the heat of the oven that makes her eyes sting and tear.

Darren replies still looking at Gail "Nothin' ta worry about Cap'n just a lil' dispute between me and Gail is all. We came ta a peaceful conclussion now haven't we Gail?"

Gail stands down, knowing the Captain would just as soon throw him out the airlock and growls "Yeah we have. We're all good friends now."

Faolin says, not really believing them "Well good can't have my mechanic or my gun for hire going at each other now can we?"

Darren and Gail both say "No sir."

Darren cracks a smile and says "I'll be in the engine room if'n anyone needs me. I'd appreciate it if one of ya ladies would bring me some food when it's ready."

Darren nods to the Captain, Mononoke, and Shanti. He backs out of the galley, turns, and head back to the engine room.

He wipes the sweat off his brow and says to himself "Now that's what I call a close shave."

"Captain...I..." Shanti paused. She's never been in charge of anything more vital than seducing a foreign minister. She knows how to take orders, not give them.

But she also doesn't want to disappoint. The Captain had been nothing but nice to her so far, but that didn't mean it would stay that way. "I don't know much about giving orders, sir."

Shanti saw his face start to fall in disappointment, and squared her shoulders, "Can I still do the cooking?"

He laughed at her, "Yeah. Seein' as how I can't cook for beans."

"Then I'll give it a shot, sir. If you're sure?" She glances at Gail, who has a sour look on his face.

"I'm sure." Hs voice was reassuring, and Shanti managed to smile at him. "You just get dinner on the table and we can talk over your plan."

Explenation: from the idea of the engine room being under the cockpit, i thought the engines would be at the front as well...then with the front filled, the Cargo Bay would be at the back.

Companion? The word makes Shanti nearly choke. Companions had choice, free-will, education, safety! Shanti had known none of these things. She puts the lid over the steaming rice, and turns to Mononoke slowly.

At the other woman's words, Gail had snickered, but hadn't said anything and Shanti tried to ignore him. Shanti spoke quietly. "You worked for Mr Universe, right?"

Shanti watched Mononoke go, tears burning her eyes once more. How could she live up the Captain's expectations of her as a first mate?

Mononoke was clearly disgusted by her, now that she knew she was a slave. Why else would she have turned away so quickly?

As quickly as she could, Shanti finished making dinner, filling two plates and setting them aside before hitting the com button; "Dinner's on the table. Puro,sir? Darren, sir? I'll bring your plates directly."

Quickly she put a fresh bottle of wine and the teapot on the table before scooping up the two filled plates and delivering one to the bridge before making her way down to the engine room.

She can hear Darren singing something to himself as she approaches, an old tune that comforts her somewhat as she knocks tentatively on the doorframe. "Brought your dinner, sir."

Darren puts down the magazine he was reading and said "Come in Shanti."

Shanti opened the door and walked in she said as she saw the magazine laying on the work bench "Should I put your plate on that work bench there Darren sir?"

Darren smiled and said "Please. Thank ya for bringin' my dinner ta me."

Shanti smiled as she put the plate of food down on the bench. She gave a quizical look at the magazine cover wondering what it said.

"It's called Mechanics Monthly." Darren said as he saw her look at it. "Oh and ya don't have ta call me sir. Darren is just fine."

Shanti nodded as she turned to walk out of the room. She turned around, smiled at Darren and said "You're welcome for food Darren."

At that Shanti headed back to the galley more happy now than she was a few minutes ago.

Back in the Galley, Shanti fills her own plate without waiting for the others, and studies the schematics a little further, the plan beginning to cement in her mind.
