WHOOPS

If you watch the BDM right at the beggining theres the bit where that women goes on about the Earth that was and when it zooms out theres all those planets on the board behind her, pause it and i reckon you could count them.

"Love. You can do all the math in the 'Verse, but you take a boat in the air you
don't love, she'll shake you off sure as a turnin' of worlds. Love keeps her in
the air when she oughtta fall down. Tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens.
Makes her a home." Mal

The OVC and Serenity the RPG both have a picture that appears to have all of the inhabited planets/moons listed. A quick count shows 40 named planets/moons plus three moons collectively named as Border Moons and 4 unnamed moons orbiting Sihnon. Not listed is Miranda and it's very likely that there are many other uninhabited bodies as well. The teacher at the start of Serenity the movie of course mentions, "Dozens of planets and Hundreds of moons."

There was no mention of it in the series and much discussion was attributed to a single or multiple solar system(s). No real info was given on this point.

In the BDM, Joss decided for a single solar system.

As to how many of what there is... DaveShayne mentions the teacher saying, "Dozens of planets and Hundreds of moons." But, in the end, we still don't have any numbers actual from any canon sources.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Doesn't Mal say something about there being 70 worlds spinning in the deleted scene from Our Mrs Reynolds? Or was it 80?

I think it would include moons; any body that took to terraforming and could support life would probably be considered a "world".

Since it's stated in the movie that it's all one solar system, I would call that canon. I know it's not all that scientifically accurate, but since Firefly is about the story rather than the science (and what science-fiction show has ever been totally accurate, anyway?) I can forgive it.
Have you read the Serenity Visual Companion? Lots of info in there.

Canon? Any official work eg, the series, the BDM, visual comapanion, etc. Though some think that Joss lost his way with the movie. But, that gets into a whole mess.

hmm well this is sort of cute, but one of those oddly irrelevant discussions only sci fi fans get into...Can't we just say there are lots of planets and let it go? Now I am gonna go shower before I forget that too ( see blog for explaination)

Also, I'd still like to know what is considered canon at this point; whether there is one solar system or several, as I have seen star charts supporting both ideas on this site.

As of the movie it's unambiguously one system which may or may not include more than one star. I lean toward the multiple stars hypothesis but others prefer a single sun conjecture.

There is a picture in the OVC (page 117) that seems to show 7 or 8 stars with their own rings of planets about them. Also you probably don't get dozens of planets orbiting a single star; our own system has only the 9 planets - one of which (Pluto) if we had discovered it now we wouldn't have called it a planet. Of course that last bit is an appeal to science which is dodgy since the 'Verse (either way you think it's arranged) is scientifically dubious.

I forget which episode it's in, but Mal says "There's over 70 Earths in this verse, and the meek have inherited not a one."

I'd find the episode, but I'm at work right now and they would frown on me spending all that time watching Firefly just to find one quote. *sigh*

Employers just have don't have any apreciation for the important things in life do they? Luckilly I'm at home so I've no problem inserting the disk to verify that the quote is from the deleted scene from Our Mrs. Reynolds.

Not necesarilly. The stars could be close enough to be orbiting each other (or one particularly massive star as primary) while still having enough distance between them to support planets in orbit about each. Admittedly a system with 7 or 8 suns with planets is rather dubious from a scientific standpoint but no more dubious than a single star having dozens of planets.

Maybe when it was mentioned that there's one system in "Serenity", they meant 'system' in a broader sense or something.

Perhaps but when you start willy nilly redefining words you get into the area of not being able to say anything for sure about the 'Verse. My gut feeling is to assume that words used in the show and movie are meant to have the more or less current meanings unless there is some compelling evidence that the word is being used to mean something different.

Also: (duh thing here) Serenity [the ship] can't go FTL (faster than light], so that backs up the issue of one "solar 'verse".

Also: Many planets in the 'verse are Moons orbiting Gas Giants (Staurn has nearly 20 of its own, so thats plauible).

And Terraforming the planets seems to also give them the ability to have their own day/Night.

Don't ask how, i like my "Captain Dumby Speak"

Hope that helps

Well no. Planets are planets. Moons are moons. Remember "Dozens of planets, hundreds of moons." So planet and moon are not being used interchangeably. The term 'world' does seem to be used to refer to both planets and moons though.
