HISTORY

Comic dealer's this month are reporting in their mailings a new novel entitled Serenity: Dark Mirror :

Five hundred years in the future Captain Mal Reynolds, a hardened veteran on the losing side of the civil war, leads a ragtag team of mercenaries through the universe on their old Firefly-class transport ship, Serenity, eking out a living by pulling of small jobs (and often crimes) or otherwise trading their skills and travel for cash while trying to stay below the Alliance’s radar. This is the first original novel based on Joss Whedon’s cracking film Serenity and the popular but short lived Firefly series.

Simons & Schuster, paperback, 304 pages, published July 2006

Author: Keith R.A. DeCandido
Release Date : Monday 31 July, 2006.

However, neither Amazon or Simon & Schuster mention any new novel. I must surmise this was an anticipated release dependent on movie/novelization success which never materialized. Disheartening to say the least.

Well Amazon used to have it listed as well but there was never any firm news from a publisher so at this point it's hard to say what if anything is going on with potential novels. So yes disheartening news unless the comic dealers know something the rest of the commercial world hasn't been told yet in which case this could actually be rather good news. Or not. Just remember to think good thoughts and know that Serenity will be back.

Keith (the listed author) posts here and I'm pretty sure he's said before that this novel doesn't exist.

Well, if Keith says it doesn't exist, then it doesn't.
I have a Simon & Schuster account. I'll drop a word in the ear of my rep tomorrow and get an answer from them.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Per Keith the novels are waiting on Joss. Here's what Keith had to say on another board:

Quote:

We're not waiting on Pocket. Pocket got on this fairly quickly. We're waiting on Joss. We're not revising to Joss's specifications because Joss hasn't actually looked at the things yet. Until he does -- and given that it's been a year, I'm not holding my breath -- you won't see any Serenity novels.

I am assuming that Joss is so busy with Wonder Woman, Goners, and his comics that looking over the books has fallen to the wayside. Without Joss's okay we're dead in the water.

Might be time to start making some noise to remind Joss we're here waiting on more story.

TFAW.com even has a cover posted: http://www.serenitystuff.com/2006/06/08/serenity-dark-mirror-novel-don
t-count-on-it

KRAD said, again, that this is not his. So where did it come from? The Amazon listing was for "Mirror Image," this one's "Dark Mirror." Who changed it? What's happening? Agh!

Personally I think the Internet, as an entity, is trying to spontaneously generate new Serenity novels.

The listing is in the current copy of Previews, page 384:
JUN06 3652 SERENITY DARK MIRROR MMPB (C: 0-1-2) SRP: $7.99 = $

It's interesting that Joss has previously said he doesn't get hands on with the novels because he'd get too involved. So why is he not looking at the proposals? It's not as though we don't have some talented authors lined up.

Or maybe it's not interesting.

I suspect (without any personal knowledge whatsoever) that it's been lagging because
a) he's busy as hell with Wonder Woman and Goners
b) he's writing his own Serenity stuff (new miniseries for Dark Horse) and is still working out what will happen next in the franchise
c) is still peeved at the less-than-stellar response to the movie
d) some other reason entirely I haven't thought of.

Certainly seems that way. I know he has other things going on, but why not let others carry the torch awhile. Better that than leaving us with nothing.

According to Keith, proposals, not complete novels were sent to Joss for approval. All he had to do was approve them, disapprove, return with revisions, whatever or something. He has had them for a year with no word at all.

Hey Chris, you got a handkerchief? My keyboard needs some cleaning now.

My take on Joss's non-action with the novels?... Since a screen continuation of the series or show is currently far from inevitable, there is the potential that the only medium Joss will have to continue his vision in is comics or something similar. It's one thing to have these little somewhat independent novels in the background while you're telling THE story in an upcoming film. But while the novels are all there is (aside from another short spurt of comics), they'd inevitably take on much more significance, even defining the direction of the 'Verse for a lot of people, and I'm not so sure Joss is willing to relinquish that control, just yet.

Of course, that's just my own uninformed speculation.

That's why it wouldn't surprise me about the delay. The very next step in Serenity would have to answer a lot of questions that Joss might prefer to handle himself.

What's River like now that she's normal? Or more normal, anyway. How is the Alliance treating Mal? How are his old contacts treating him, considering so many people were killed just because they knew him? What was the reaction in the worlds to the Mirana Wave, and to the Alliance's part in it? Has the Alliance given up looking for River and Simon? Is Mal going to look for a new pilot, or continue as they are? What's Inara doing now? Is she still a Companion, or is she taking a break? What's her relationship with Mal going to be like? How is Zoe handling things? Will Simon and Kaylee last? And what's Jayne up to these days? And who the heck was Book, anyway?

It would be very hard indeed to write a post-Serenity novel that didn't address most of these (I know, I started writing a fanfic one :) ) and from what I understand, the writers were told to write post-movie. It would be a lot easier to start producing books that happened before the movie, until Joss decides on the direction.

Well, at least there is hope regarding possibly reading author Steven Brust's Firefly novel:

I've enjoyed his other books, and I submit there are similarities in demeanor to his Vlad Taltos [ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0441006159/ref=pd_cp_b_title/104-1984
