Kaylee has strength that the likes of you could never understand. To face a world of death and suffering, as well as the immediate tangible threat of rape and still maintain innocence requires so much strength and force of character that to call her a wimp is like calling the sun dark.

Very true Chris, sadly the little troll won't even comprehend a word you're saying to it.

- Shiny. Let's be bad guys.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die

True, but it needed to be said.

Thank you Christhe cynic I agree. To face all the horror she has and to not only survive, but to thrive and maintain her gentle sweetness and childlike capactity for joy and her innocence says that Kaylee is very very strong.

You're only young once, but you can be immature any time!

Not to say that Kaylee isn't strong, but some of Kaylee's innocence is also a product of being protected by the men (and women) in her life, and thus having her faith in the world reassured a whole lot of the time.

The bad things she lives through tend to leave her shaken enough to lose the sunshiney attitude. River with the gun, for one.

The real horrors (being held at gunpoint by Tracey, Jubal Early...) those come at the end of the series and we don't really see their long-term effects on her. In the movie she isn't quite as happy, there's a touch of sadness to her, and we don't see her react to the aftermath of the Miranda incident, safe for embracing life with Simon. (Whee!)

She DOES need a lot of reassurance in the show, so... I'm not sure if all of that strength comes from inside Kaylee or from the love of the people around her who want her to stay the way she is.

I don't know, I picture her lying shot on a table saying, "It's nobody's fault, promise me you'll remember that," and, "You just gotta have faith in people," and I think that comes from inside. If anything she was the one doing the reassuring for Mal, in spite of his effort to have it be the other way around.

I don't think she's the strongest, I think Zoe is, but hers is a strength I admire more.

Also I'm talking about the fact that she isn't jaded, being protected doesn't stop someone from being jaded, no matter how hard you try. I think about the last scene in the series. What's she doing having just been so close to being raped? Enjoying herself playing a game with a smile on her face.

Things obviously stick with her, get her down, and so on, but in the end she stays innocent, even if she is occasionally down she's still managed to take on the entire 'verse in a psychological battle that we all have to fight at some point, and she won.

Me, I lost before war was declared.

Innocence lost is a common story because innocence maintained is so much harder.

I don't know if innocence is the aboslute best term (my mind keeps flashing on a particular scene from Out Of Gas). But hopefulness, definitely. Kaylee maintains hope when everyone else has lost theirs. It's a truly admirable trait, one that is often overlooked.

It's just an object. It doesn't mean what you think.

That's a very good point!

Innocence is a kind of ignorance. It's not something you can actively preserve for yourself.

But hopefulness.. that speaks of an inner determination to go forward and not be pressed down and that's something Kaylee has in spades!

That's why I love the fact that River ends up making Kaylee help herself in "Objects in Space". She doesn't just rescue her, like Mal would have, she gives her back a sense of strength and self-confidence by showing her how to rescue herself and the others... If I hadn't loved River before, THAT would have sealed the deal for me. *G*

Entirely pointy.

I'm not sure anyone else has said this; but, despite her apparent vulnerablity, River is the strongest woman on Serenity.

"She feels everything. She can't not."
