Book: “You know tactics nearly as well as I do, Jubal. You can see that Serenity’s got no chance as things stand right now, and most likely neither do you. We can make it to your ship and dock, but if and when we run, they’ll chase us. Those guns on the Reaver’s ship far outstrip yours… [beat] but not while they’re docked.”

Early: “I know what you’re getting at. You just want to save your own crew.”

Book: “There’s some people on that ship that you want saved as well. Some mighty valuable people that you’ve been hunting for a long time now. I don’t think you’ll just walk away from that.”

Early: “Not likely”

Book: “You get to your ship. Fire on the guns on their starboard side. As soon as you do, I’ll ram their boarding clamps, then your guns might stand a chance against the Reavers ship’s remaining guns”

Early: “This isn’t over between you and me. Next time we meet…”

"Simon, if you're done looking Wash over, I can get him to his bunk. The less people you have in here with that monster the better.
[glares at Niska]

She throws Wash's arm over her shoulder-he looks at her with a dazed smile. She proceeds to walk him down the corridor to the room he and Zoe share.

The front of Inara's shuttle slices not so cleanly through the weak material of the Reaver's expansion walkway to Serenity. Reavers spill into space as the air is sucked from their ship, but Inara's shuttle has spun out of control. The lights flash warnings on the control panel as through the careening ship, Book tries to reach the controls, but he is hit from behind with an unknown flying object... his last satisfied vision out of the window is of Serenity's hatch, still closed.

As Inara enters Wash & Zoe's quarters and climbs down the ladder.

Wash moans, "zhong li han shu."

That's supposed to be "gravity works" in chinese. However since Wash is incoherent and I can't read chinese, for all I know it says "I can look up your towel."

Oh. And his inside out pants which were hanging by a thread? They're off now. So's the shirt. Actually, come to think of it, the shirt is still in Inara's hands. It's the last thing she was holding on to before Wash fell down the steps.

Otherwise, he's motionless. Just a lump of flesh and ship grime on the floor. The poor boy could really use a sponge bath.

Early realizes that Book needs instant rescuing.

"Well, he's gonna owe me a big favor after this," Early says with a smile. He jetpacks at full speed towards Book and the shuttle.

Early smacks very hard into Book, knocking the old man unconscious. His jetpack was at full thrust when he blew through the door way. They both fell down. Early pulls out his spare suit and puts the unconscious Book into it.

Then he jetpacks back to the ship. Book's weight makes the jetpack slow, but they make it, just as Inara's shuttle blows up and puts a hole in the Reaver's ship.

Not expecting any help, considering the rather frantic noises coming from all corners of the upstairs hall, Inara kneels down to try to conivince Wash to wake just one more time

Jayne hears a shot from the infirmary, footsteps rapidly aproaching him, he steps out from around the bulkhead leveling Vera, conveniently into Niska's face.

"As much as I'm wantin' ta let Vera here paint the insides a your skull all over the gorram wall, I'm gonna give ya to the count a' NOW to drop the sissy shooter and surrender."

Niska drops the gun and Jayne cold cocks him with the butt of Vera.

"Ah hell, I shoulda' let him walk now i gotta carry him back ta the infirmary."

Jayne grabs Niska's legs and drags him back to the infirmary, bouncing his face and head along the deck plating as they go. Arriving at the infirmary Jayne dumps Niska on the floor and says...

"Hell Mal, if ya can't take care a yur toys, I ain't gonna let ya play with em no more..."
"Uh, Mal?...Mal?... Why is the a hole in Mal?!"
"Someone tell me what the GORRAM HELL is goin' on Reavers at the door, Mal on the floor, and why the Hell is Inara nekid!"

Jayne drags in Niska and dumps him on the floor.

"Why did you bring that pile of gossa back here, Jayne? Look what he did to the Cap'n! Dump him out the airlock, let the Reaver's have him, I don't care...just get rid of him."

Mal starts to stir on the table.

"Cap'n? Cap'n? It's me, Kaylee. Got the engines workin' enough to get us outta here. Cap'n?"

A tear traces down her cheek as Mal lapses into unconsciousness again.

The world spins into painful colors as Book fights for consciousness... and wins!!! Finding himself conscious and on Early's ship, he opens his eyes a slit, and prepares a hasty plan of escape. With Early involved steering his ship and fighting off the Reaver ship, Book has a moment of clarity.

"His back is turned, he thinks I'm unconscious, and he'll probably use me as a hostage.... this isn't the time to play the Shepherd." Book thinks to himself.

Moving quickly, Book slips out of the bridge of Early's ship and heads for a shuttle to make his way back to Serenity.

Zoe's Move:

From the bridge, see's Inara's shuttle slam into the Reaver's ship and the damage it does. Manages to maneuver Serenity away from the impending disaster, but not so far that Book can't make it back to the ship.

Around the same time, hears the thud of Wash hitting the floor in their quarters, Inara calling for help, and a gunshot in the infirmary. Hits the intercom to her quarters.

"Inara, I'm goin' to check out that gunshot. Stay put, I'll be down to help you with Wash in a minute."

Rifle at the ready, walks down toward the infirmary. Sees that Simon has Mal on the table, River, Kaylee, and Jayne there, with Niska apparently unconscious on the floor. Steps into the doorway with a look at Mal, then Simon.

To Simon: "Okay, I'm gonna say that Niska here shot the captain and Jayne took him out. Seeing as you look like you got things under control here, I'm heading up to help Inara get Wash to bed. Jayne, why don't you see that Niska gets trussed up like a harvest day goose, so this don't happen again? Keep him alive, though. He may have some info we could use."

Without waiting for Jayne's inevitable argument, heads off toward her bunk. Sees Inara standing at the top of the ladder holding Wash's shirt. Does not react to Inara's state of dress. Looks down at Wash's prone form at the bottom of the ladder, in his mostly unclothed glory.

*Beat* Grins.

"That's my man."

Climbs down the ladder, carefully NOT stepping on her darling husband. Motioning Inara down the ladder, takes hold of Wash under the shoulders and with Inara's help, puts him to bed.

Tucking the sheets up around him, runs hand through Wash's hair.

"Only you could manage to sleep through all this trouble..."

To Inara: "Why don't you go see what you can do to help the Doctor. If Jayne's finished seein' to Niska, I could use him on the bridge."

Heads for the bridge to check the latest situation/damage.

End Move.

Inara's move

Inara finished settling Wash into bed, she glances around and notices a pair of Zoe's dusty leather pants laying on a table near the bed.

Surely she won't mind...

Inara slides into Zoe's leather pants, the leather creaks as she moves. The legs are a bit long, but they'll have to do. Her bare toes peek from beneath the hem of the legs.

She takes one last look at Wash, assuring herself he'll not be falling OFF or OUT OF anything anytime soon, and climbs up the ladder on her way to the Infirmary.

Notices Jayne, who is paying total attention to his work, tying up Niska in a very uncomfortable fashion.

ZACHSMIND

Zoom in slowly on Wash's dirty and bloody face, partially obscured by his own arm and the relative dark light in the room. The words of Inara pleading for Wash to regain consciousness or for anybody to help her help him fade distantly into..

..WASH'S DREAM

(Fade on Zoe's face. She appears to be lying on her stomach, resting chin on crossed arms. We see a bare shoulder.)

ZOE: I think it's strange. I mean, I think I should worry that we haven't found him yet.

(Shot of a puppy playing with a blue dog toy)

WASH: Found Lou?
ZOE: Forget Lou. This isn't about Lou.
WASH: But he saved me.
ZOE: You saved you. Lou just led you to the rabbit hole.

(Shot of Wash cleaned up and in a burgundy smoking jacket, looking down at Zoe)

WASH: If not Lou, then who?
ZOE: You know. You'd think he'd have shown up by now.
WASH: Oh. Him. Well. He will. He's just not ready.
ZOE: You're not worried?
WASH: I never worry here. (Smile) I'm safe here.
ZOE: You don't know everything. About us.
WASH: Is there something I should know?
ZOE: No. But there will be.

(Wash smiles, reaches for something.)

(Shot of a paintbrush dipping into ink jars.)

WASH: So ominous of you. That's not our place, to look to the future.
ZOE: The river will not come to us, fiddler...

(tight close up of Wash's face)

ZOE: ... Listen to me. I am your ocean. Take it to the river.

(Wash frowns)

WASH: Don't have time to think about that. You know we have to get to the edge. We have to find Lou.

(The camera pulls back so we can see Zoe is lying face-down on her bed, naked, and Wash is painting on her back.)

ZOE: No. I don't know that.
WASH: Yes you do.
ZOE: You never preached to the choir, my fiddle.

(The look on his face indicates WASH realizes something important. It's a look of mild shock at first.)

WASH: You don't know me so well.

(And then disappointment.)

(Shot of Wash dipping the paintbrush again, moving it across to Zoe's back, which is covered with chinese symbols.)

ZOE: I know you've never been to the edge. You might miss something important if you hurry.
WASH: I don't want to leave here.

(Zoe twists back to look at Wash)

ZOE: Why not?

(Wash stands up, looking down at Zoe. He turns away toward a dark red curtain. Walks over to it.)

WASH: It's so bright. The star that guides me. And I feel someone has walked this path before me. Worn my boots. Slept in my bones.

(Pulls back the curtain to reveal a brightly sunlit desert. The light falls on Zoe, who looks over. Wash looks back at Zoe, still holding the curtain open.)

WASH: That someone once breathed life into the broken river, and and that someone becons me now. Becons us. Unfinished business. It knows I'm the pilot, and you're the second, but it knows us by other names. Other masks.

(Wash looks back out to the desert through the window. Shot of the desert, scattered plants and rocks. We briefly see something moving, then it's gone.)

ZOE: It knows us all.
WASH: It thinks we've swam these shores before.
ZOE: Don't be afraid. We have.

(Shot of the puppy stalking forward toward the camera, in slow-motion.)

WASH: But it's waiting for us.
ZOE: It is us, lover.

..END DREAM (for the moment)
