Just got an email saying someone had commented on one of my fics.

WHOOT! Loves me feedbacks! Go to look and it's SPAM! Insurance spam! Meaningless, useless insurance spam, twice.

There's the link. What happened? Is anyone else getting this? Or has someone picked up a virus in their computer that's using their favs list as a spam tool? I've never seen this before.

Is there a mod who can delete them?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I've seen another post about this... somewhere. Don't remember. Might have been Central. Don't know how it happens, and I am sorry you got spammed. I think it was suggested that the whole damn thing needed to be deleted to make it go away, but could be a mod might be able to delete it for you if you can find one.

One of the many annoyances of internet life, I'm afraid, but it does amuse me in one fashion.

Given the extremely low hit-return on general spam, someone thought there were *enough* of us to make it worth a try.

Kind of a backhanded compliment, you think about it.

It's actually about Google and other search engines, not us.

Google rates websites according to how often they are linked to elsewhere. It also indexes FFF.net. Therefore if there are loads of links from here to another website with the word Viagra or Steroids or whatever, then Google thinks "Oooo. That site linked to must be popular, therefore whenever people search for Viagra, I'll show that website."

You should be able to delete the comments if you are the person who uploaded the first thing to the Blue Sun thread.

You can probably ask Haken about getting rid of it, but I dunno if he can. I was reading someone else's fics that had this problem. They ended up deleting the BSR item and re-adding it. Unfortunately, this makes all the nice comments go away, too, so if you try that route, I'd save the comments in my 'puter.

Is no place safe from this festering pestulance known as spam?!

I just think it's really really wierd that the spam-bot targeted story reviews, and on only one of my stories.

I mean, wouldn't you think that it would have spammed the board in general instead of tucking its message into a review-space on an older story?

And really, you would think that if it was going to target something, it would have been my Mal/Simon slash-fic, not sweet little "When River Cries".

Eh, I'm not going to make myself crazy over it. People reading my stories might actually be in the market for new car insurance!

I got that on three different stories of mine just yesterday. I've PM'd Haken about removing them but I haven't heard back yet. You'd think there would be a way to prevent such a thing.

I think it was some kind of auto-response, probably from a worm on someone's computer.
It just visited all their bookmarks and dropped spam where it could.

The way to prevent it would be forcing log-in from anyone who wants to review, and I'm not sure we want to go that route. I know there are people who visit Fireflyfans.net just to read, who aren't actual members.

yeah, I don't mind Anon reviews much, but it will be nice if the Administrators can delete that stuff. Still haven't heard from them yet.

I did that for a long time, and if I'd had to log in just to point out a small pelling mistake I would have been scared off

BlackRabbit (?), the author of a great post-BDM fanfic, Red Run, removed it from the site because the first chapter was being bombarded with SPAM. I remember seeing about 10-15 reviews, all SPAM, for that first chapter. I don't know how that happened but it was really annoying and ended up getting one of my favourite fanfics pulled from the site. :(

I wish someone would actually answer the questions if these can be removed. But no one has bothered yet. I don't want to pull my stuff and lose all the comments either. But it's really starting to irritate me.

I had to pull my first fic and repost because I literally got like 30 spams on it! But it has only happened on one other of mine. It would be nice to not have it, though.

Sorry, been kinda busy. I'll try and make something so that you can remove the spams.
