But he didn't want her sullied with crime, or jeopardize her in any way. He risked the rest of the crew instead, in the days to come. And he must have guessed that little River has been sullied and trumpled over enough, so who cares if she takes a bit more. Looks like a pretty cynical double standard to me. I'd add a good kick in the nuts (or two) to that punch.
