The back end is too big, the engines too small, and it doesnt have a cockpit yet, but considering I have no blueprints to work from, its not too bad.

Anyway let me know what you think.

I noticed there were some other people going to build the ship, did they ever get round to it?

*VERY* nice.

Sorry I hadn't replied sooner, but I'd been somewhat busy.

I really liked your use of textures to emulate the outer panels.
How did you add the lights? Was that in post?

Oh, and what program did you use? MAX? LW?
I'm a trueSpace user ( http://www.caligari.com) myself.

I look forward to seeing more of it in the future!

I use Max, the lights are small spheres of self illuminating colour, I then apply a glow to them using the lens effect function, theres no post work in the image.

I am hoping to have it more or less finished by tommorow.

I don't know if you can do this in Max, I do know it is a feature in the early editions of Lightwave.

Take a frame grab, or other picture, of Serenity from the show, and use it as a background image in the modeling program. Then you can trace around it to get the features right.

The nose looks a bit wide, but maybe it just looks that way to me. Even if it ain't exactly right, you got a damn good looking ship.

Yes you can do that, trouble is there arent any good picture that are side on, or front on.

You don't have to be side on, or head on. The picture does not need to be one of the plan views. It will require oreinting your model appropriately however.

Again, my lightwave knowledge is not up to date. But it has 4 modeling windows. The normal 3 you would expect, and a forth that let you set up the camera, tilt the object you were playing with. You could set up background image in this 4th window, and use the other three to manipulate the points in the mesh.

And then if you look at the Zoic Studios thread, in their picture, there is the top view of Serenity. :)

Drop me an email or im, or whatever. Let me know. Thanks.

Very cool looking Biotech.

I have been kicking around the idea of sculpting a model of Serenity. I have sculpted some in the past, but I am hesitant to do it as I am not sure that I could do her justice.

Ok, sorry about that, when I was ziping up the model it gave me the option to add to firefly.zip, which I had alreaedy created for the textures, but instead all it did was create a new firefly.zip in a different directory.

I should have checked it before I sent it, but its winging its way towards you now via the magic of email!

My PC is a 2ghz amd, 512 ram, 300gig raid array hard drive plus some fun extras

I'm still getting the hang of 3ds max, I'm a novice with the 3d programs other than poser.

I haven't been able to apply all the textures yet, but I believe that is probably my own niavety.

Now I just need to get a decent export in .3ds form so I can bring into my other programs, so far I keep messing up the ship, which looks great in max!

I will dilegently try to figure this all out. I appreciate your help.

If you extract all your textures to a folder you know the name of, you should be able to direct max to the folder once, and it should remember it from then on.

I use poser too, its a cool program.

You might want to limit the resolution if you are doing an animation, 640x480 is probably good enough for transfering to video, and will be still good enough to see online.

I just pop it up to 1024x728 for single frames, as thats my resolution on my desktop, so now and again I make an image good enough to be my background picture.

I finally got it all to import to 3ds max, she's really a beauty!

Now I just have to get a good export so I can animate her in poser.

I just am not good at 3ds max yet, so not really able to animate in her yet.

So far I keep getting a very ugly 3ds model when I export, practically turing poor serenity inside out.

Hopefully I will be able to get a solid model in 3ds form so I can import it into poser.

Otherwise I'm goign to actually have to force myself to learn 3ds in a hurry!

Thanks for all your help Biotech, really nice work.

You can import a poser animation into Max in 3ds format, it will be easier to retexture your poser figure, as the map coordinates stay the same, than it will be to get serenity into poser.

But its 4 in the morning here, so I am off to bed belatedly, I'll help you some more tommorow if you need it.

In the mean time, you could always look at the forums in renderosity for advice on how to export from poser to max and visa versa, look in the forums.

Renderosity is where the big images are hosted I posted earlier.

Yeah, it's more my inability to animate in 3ds max as of yet, just not comfoprtable with the program, so I've been trying a few conversion programs to change the 3ds file to an obj that I can import into poser, since I am a whiz animating there.

But I am endeavoring to learn max so I can animate within that program anyway. So we'll see.

I'm hoping.

The model ois really, really nice. Great textures, she's going to be fantastic for the flik. I really appreciate it.

So here I am again - but this time with good news! I've got a brilliant obj version of serenity from your model, she is flying high in poser as we speak.

Only one issue came up, the model is looking for these textures:

top.jpg
plateox2.jpg
fx3_panels_9f.jpg

And I seem to have a few extra textures, roof.jpg and such.

Are any of them what I should be redirecting the model to look for?

Sorry to be such a bother, you've already been a tremendous help.

I should have a nice animation to post soon.

Oh, I know, I've read your logs - very exciting stuff. Say, you never did fully explain the "Orpheus" thing. You worried about it sounding too much like "Morpheus" (when I would have been worrying about "orifice").

Of course you know that he failed in saving his wife and wound up with his head floating downstream, singing the Firefly themesong. This type of ending is not unusual for Greek mythology.

My mad h4X0r skillz pale in comparison to yours, but if I can offer my services in any mundane respect, I am your willing servant. I do Web apps and Flash.

Okay, so the theme of my series is "never look back" hence Orpheus, the crew is of course motley and they all have aspects of their lives they wish to move away from but it's so hard not to look back at who you were so they seem to stumble a bit.

Our "Captain" who won't let people actually address him as such because of a shady military history during the war... Jonah is now a gambler and hustler who has the good heart but seemingly poor judgement.

His "hired gun" is Sam, she is basically what I imagine the baby from the "3 Godfathers" would grow up to be if the three outlaws raised the child in the best way they could.

We have the pilot "Whip" who is a former smuggler, come out of her family business she is now a acer pilot.

Cho is the formally schooled engineer who is brought aboard to keep the ships mechanics running, he is highly regarded and his family hopes sort of rested on him making somethign of himself, but he doesn;t have the strength or courage to face disappointment... yet.

Gus is the ship's Doc who only the "Captain" knows was a horse doc before coming aboard. He's the "cap's" confidant and bartender.

That's a tease of most of the regular characters...

Anyway... More animations and images to come. I am nearly finished with the 3d model of our cargo bay set.

Nice animations, this ship looks quite glossy, or should I say shiny?

In the stand alone render though the engine outtakes appear to be in the middle of the nacelles for some reason, although they look ok in the animations.

I look forward to seeing your cargo bay, and good look getting the ring to rotate!
