OOC: Besides, my character IS gonna be unconscious for eight hours of game time, so I gotta keep him interesting in SOME fashion. Maybe I will continue to explore this restless idea in here, and then incorporate it into a more extensive fanfic later on. Just don't wanna derail the thread.

I should add though that it's not canon of me to assume Wash has River like abilities. I don't mean to go there, but I do believe the fact River has arrived with this group may trigger something deep in all of them. A need to protect River for reasons they do not consciously understand but can be explored aprocryphally without disturbing canon.

River is a very special little girl, who happens to be able to kill with her brain. =)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled shared hallucination.

There is a garish bloom of bright red blood on the chest of his undershirt.

She pulls one sleeve of the long, white shirt that she's wearing up so that she can lay a cool hand on his sweaty brow.

He smells of dust, blood, and the musky scent of man. She closes her eyes a moment, hears the metallic clink of Simon's insturments as he lays them out on a sterile work table. There is bloody work to be done here.

He moans a little now, turns his head toward her.

His eyes are glazed and dark....

Book finds his way to an empty shuttle, and pauses seeing extra spacesuits in a nearby open locker. Praising his "good fortune" at not seeing any more troopers, he quickly grabs a suit, and shrugs it on inside the empty shuttle.

Book to himself and God

"Please, let them be too distracted to notice me."

The shuttle fires up and swiftly floats away from Early's gunship. It moves in a strategic pattern trying to avoid both Early's guns and the returning fire of the Reaver ship.

Knowing that Wash will be out of for a while, Zoe settles herself on the bridge and begins flipping switches and checking readouts, looking for any new information on the battle between Niska's (Early's?) ship and the Reavers.

She thinks to herself: "Shepherd, I hope you're plannin' on gettin' here soon. I don't know how long we can wait with this battle goin' on."

Hits the button to call down to the infirmary.

"Doctor, is Kaylee still down there with you? I need to know if we can move our girl off this battlefield."

...with unsuspected skill, Book maneuvers through the crossfire and draws close to Serenity. Putting Early/Niska's shuttle on autopilot, Book turns on the life support of his spacesuit, and steels himself for a spacewalk.

Book, no longer concerned with stealth, exits the shuttle, speeds through space and slams a little too hard into Serenity. He engages the autograv and his boots suction soundlessly to the hull.

Early's move

Early is having trouble handling the ship by himself.

"Book," he says, "come give me a hand." Early looks back and realizes the cowardly fake shepherd has stolen a shuttle and disappeared.

"Well, that no good, one ball muther humper!" Early exclaims. "Is this how he thanks me for saving his life?"

Early checks his vid monitor and sees the fleeing Book floating towards Serenity. Early says, "Damn, the bugger stole my space suit too!"

Early fires a cannon towards Serenity. A warning shot, but the proximity blast knocks Book off the ship's hull. Book floats off in a crazy figure eight pattern, heading straight for the Reavers.

"Hah, that'll teach that one ball bugger," Early says with a smile.

A sudden jolt knocks Book off his feet and he spins wildly out of control. But Book recognizes Early's spacesuit from lengthy descriptions from the other crew members, and using the remote control on the arm of the suit he calls Early's shuttle back to him, and quickly boards before reaching the crossfire.

Before Early can act again, Book zooms the life-saving shuttle quickly back to Serenity, where he again exits the shuttle, but this time near the top hatch of Serenity. He enters Serenity, and calls down the hallway to whomever may be on the bridge.

"I'm back on! GO!"

Early's move

Early's jaw hangs in amazement. He realizes that Book just did impossible things.

"Wow," Early says, "That little one-balled bugger sure can light the fire in his pants, I'll give him that."

Early changes the remote code on the stray shuttle and calls it back to his ship. He can see the Reavers are having trouble with the hole in their ship. Early has one cannon left and he debates whether to shoot the Reaver ship or Serenity.

He thinks about Book and gets really mad.

Early makes a decision. "I need reinforcements. I'm almost out of fuel and weapons. Does that seem right to me?"

Early turns his ship and heads towards Whitefall to visit Patience. But before Early leaves, he discharges a cloaked tracking device onto Serenity's hull so he can easily find her again in the Black.

Early grits his teeth and says, "Goodbye, Serenity. Your days are numbered. I'll be back in no time."

He leaves Niska, Serenity and the One-Ball Book far behind.

Under her breath: "You'll be ok now, Cap'n. Inara'll take care of you, and Serenity'll take care o' the rest."

Wow. What a dream sequence, Zach. Talk about deep. I love your idea about River's proximity triggering something in everyone else's brain. Hmmm...maybe the only way they could access that ability is through dreams? Then have to try and interpret when they wake up? Notice the exchange between Mal & River in "Safe" when she's talking about the cattle not being cows on the ship, and Mal understanding what she's saying. I have to say, I'm a bit envious of the deep connection that the characters seem to have. *sigh* Wish I had that in my life, even just a smidge.

Zoe's Move:

Hears Kaylee tell her to go, assumes that Serenity can move under her own power. Watches the sensors and confirms that the Reaver ship is indeed following Early's exit toward Whitefall (where Patience is).

Presses Wash's "big red button" to call the shuttles home and watches Inara's shuttle limp its way slowly back toward Serenity. Waits for Inara's shuttle to dock via its autopilot.

Thinks to herself, "Here goes..." Pushes the appropriate buttons/throws Wash's three "do something" switches, and heads Serenity into the black toward Hera.

Once solidly in motion, sets the autopilot, and heads down to check on Wash and Mal... and make sure Jayne hasn't killed Niska...yet.

End Move.

Edited to account for the status of Inara's poor shuttle, damaged when Book rammed the Reavers' docking clamps.

Early's move

Early speeds towards Whitefall, but his ship is suddenly jerked violently and comes to a halt. The ship's controls are no longer responding.

Early's ship has been grappled by the Reavers.

"Gorram Reavers must have learned to patch a hole," mutters Early. "Why didn't they go after Serenity? Well, I won't let the Reavers have me for a second time!"

But then his ship loses power, and by the time auxilliary power comes on, Early finds himself surrounded by Reavers. They have boarded Early's ship.

He puts up a tremendous fight and kills half a dozen Reavers, but they finally poison him with Clover Potion and take him prisoner.

For the second time.

Before Early loses consciousness, a female Reaver sits on Early and straddles him.

She reaches down his pants and grabs a testicle.

"Helloooo, Wunnn Bawlll....." she hisses. She squeezes with all her might.

Early screams and faints. The Reavers drag him away. Early has become a one-ball prisoner of the Reavers.

Like Book once was, long ago. And why he's more or less intact, now.

Early's move

Early is unconscious aboard the Reaver's ship, but he dreams, remembering his past. He remembers when he is a teenager and he first meets "Book" on Ariel. Back then, the young Book is called "Strike" and he is a newly recruited gutter guard in sector 9A, forced to hunt members of his own former gang. He serves on a Firefly worse than Serenity. It is a shaky ride. Strike is a very scary man.

Early remembers playing with his mommy and Strike in the yard. Early remembers everyone laughing and then his mommy makes him go inside. But young Jubil Early hides in the bushes to listen to his mother talk to Strike.

"I'm pregnant, Strike," she says.

"Jubil is going to have a brother? Well, there's no way I'm the father. We made a deal."

"I'm pregnant again, Strike Early, don't you be leavin' me with 2 children..."

"The second child isn't mine! You cheated on me!" cries Strike.

"No I haven't, both children are yours, I promise!" cries Jubil's mother.

Strike interrupts her angrily, "Well everyone around here thinks you're guilty of being unfaithful."

"I promise, I'm innocent," cries his mother.

"I don't give half a hump if your innocent or not. Now where does that put you?"

"I'm pregnant with your child, that's where!"

"Well, if it's copper you need, sell him to the academy. They pay good coin for potentionals."

From behind the bushes, young Jubil Early is scared, but also very intrigued. "Strike is my father?" he thinks, astonished. He wonders what the Academy is.

Suddenly, Early wakes to the present and screams in horror as the Reavers warm up their drills and laser knives.

Jaynes turn:

After making sure Niska is tied up tight (thinking to himself, hey ain't my problem if his friggin' hands start turning purple, tight is tight and they only said don't kill 'em), Jayne heads over to the cargo bay and starts doning his spacesuit.

Over the comm Jayne says...

" I'm headin' out after the sheppard, 'afore he gets himself fried up an eaten by them damn Reavers."

(Muttering) "Can't believe im riskin' my fool neck for some gorram sheppard, he better get me a good spot in the hereafter, or at least some womenfolk..."

Jayne grabs two extinguishers and the tow line and heads out the airlock. Using the fire extinguisher to jet himself towards Book, he holds on for dear life to the tow line so he can pull them back if his makeshift jetpack gets used up.

He sees Book taking the other shuttle towards Serenity, gets all agravated that his Heroics got prempted, and heads back inside

OOC: Well I'm opening and closing manager at Chili's today so Jayne will need to be minimally active today... :disapointed: Also, stay away from Jaynes nether regions with with you Reaver antics Tash!

It's getting very, very crowded in here!

It appears that she is talking about the physical people, which we know (OCC), she's not. River leaves and goes to her room. When she gets there, she falls asleep before she hits the pillow.

Book falls to the floor outside the galley, weak with exhaustion, and passes into a jumbled remembrance. Book had been a shepherd a long time, longer than anyone thought. In his time as a shepherd, he had visited many sick, demented, and injured people, but one stood out in his mind… the one he couldn’t help… Jubal Early.

Book had spent many months visiting the demented Early in his padded cell, trying in vain to help him remember his past life, to recall his humanity, but to no avail.

Early’s delusions had often come sputtering from his madness in the form of talking about his father, whom Early believed to have abandoned him. But Early was lost in a dream world, his father having been killed in the War.

Inara's turn

As Mal loses conciousness again, Inara's eyes shine with unshed tears. She glances up at Simon-who is still engrossed with preparing for the long surgery at hand.

She smoothes Mal's hair from his face, touches the minute scar on his ear, where once the flesh there was rent, then turns at the sound of Niska's maniacal laughter. Anger swells in her.

"What amuses you so, you old bastard?!" I swear on all that is holy, on the god and goddess, on ALL my training, if he dies, you will never laugh again. I know a man's body, and I can hurt you in ways not even you can imagine.

...she continues to glare in Niska's direction as Simon begins extracting the bullet from the Capitan.

Astriana-I would like to continue on with the character of Mal in this thread. However, I'm at an impasse as to how to write myself back into it. Barring going back and doing a rewrite (which I'm against). I really need the character of Simon to complete work on Mal. It's not realistic per the story-line for Mal to just "get up" like he wasn't shot. Nonetheless, I'm really enjoying the story thus far and am keeping an eye on developments.

Inara's turn

The surgery went well, it was a clean shot, back to front, hitting no major arteries, and missing all vital organs, and exiting the chest.

Inara barely listens as Simon continues to talk as he works....she can't stop looking at the small, puckered hole where once blood had flown, now neatly cinched up with blue thread.

Simon is just finishing up the last bit of suturing on Mal's chest when Shepherd Book walks in, a nearly imperceptible stumble in his step.

"Shepherd!! You're back! I was so worried when I saw you....you were unconcious..but I...."

she stops speaking and lowers her eyes in shame. I should have stayed to help you...please forgive me, Shepherd....I was thinking only of myself--I was so afraid, and ashamed....

she pauses, realizing that it's possible Book has seen her completely naked, tied up, and devoid of any pride. Her knees begin to tremble, red spots rise before her eyes.

....so ashamed...

ooc:CIARA-Filling in for CAPNRAHN (who plays SIMON) would be problematic for me. As ZACHSMIND and I encountered this problem earlier in the thread (RP?) of writing in for absent characters or doubling up on parts. If there is already someone playing the part of SIMON, would that person have to resign participation in RP? Or would CapnRahn be allright if someone else filled in for him? Another option would be to ask for new player for part of SIMON. I would like to keep on going with story, but it seem like we're getting bogged down with extraneous events and not moving with storyline. I mean we ARE still heading for Hara to pick up weapons right?

p.s.: I think you guys are very talented writers and I like how you all remain true to character.

OOC Just a guess, I'd say he will awake an hour or two after the surgery anesthesia wears off. Then depending on the advancement of future medicines, (I bet they kick ass) he could give orders almost immediately, he could be ready to move within a day or two, and he'd be back to his ole self within a few weeks.

Early's turn

Early is semi-conscious, as he lies in the Reaver torture chamber. "Why haven't they killed me?" he wonders.

Early forces himself to stand. To his surprise, the door isn't locked. He limps out into the corridor, naked and bleeding.

Several Reavers are in the corridor. Early slouches and growls and slobbers, pretending to be a Reaver. They ignore him.

Early lurches down the hall and begins searching for his ship.

Inara's turn

Inara regains her composure, leaning against Book for support. She begins to notice that his muscles are starting to tremble with the strain of holding them both up. She looks up into his smiling dark eyes, and sees pain there.

"Oh Shepherd...what you must have went through--please..lie down here. We'll have Simon check you over."

Gets Book to one of the side med-beds, and calls for Simon to look at him

presses the intercom

"Zoe-are we on our way now? Mal's all sewn up, and he should rouse in a few hours. Do you need me to go wake Wash?"
