So EmmaRigby and I are pondering the yummyishistness (its my word!) of Sean Bean and Nathan Fillion in a show as Mal and Sharpe (OK Sharpe's great-great etc grandson that is just like him)

OK, I have to just take in the thought for a bit.....................................................................................................................................................

Who's Sharpe?

I'm obviously not too sharpe, because I dunno. Forgive me. I like The Bean, but I haven't seen all of his movies. Just Equilibrium and that trilogy with the midgets.

The Serenity Summer Campaign is on, baby - prepare to kick some serious pigu!
September 30th is Serenity 'Versary! Be there or be a purple-belted poop-head. (<- not the official slogan.)

OK

Look for Sharpe's Army, Sharpe's Honor, Sharpe's Gold

It is about a man in the army during the Napoleonic wars. He is a commoner and saves Wellington's life. Wellington gives him a field commission and he is made an officer.

A commoner......lifted to the ranks of Officer.....amongts the nobility and aristocracy. It is and EXCELLENT series!

I like that pretext (and The Beanster) - I'm gonna have to check if the series (of TV movies, I guess) is available in Germany.
Seems to have slight similarities to SHOGUN, one of the greatest mini-series of all time imho, with one of my favorite actors of all time, Toshiro Mifune. I'm actually wearing a black shirt with a white image of him in "Seven Samurai" right now.

Funny you should mention this...

Husband & I just finished Sharpe's box set 1 last night and will probably break into set 2 tonight. Just placed an order from Amazon for box 3 ($71.95!)...

Hmmm.... A Sharpe / Reynolds sandwich?

{blinks hard a few times}

I'll be in my bunk. Or their bunk. Maybe on the Mess table. Or in Wash's chair. Hell, I'm not picky. Wherever.

3 box sets, 15 episodes in all...

1. Sharpe's Rifles Collection
2. Sharpe's Swords Collection
3. Sharpe's Revenge Collection

I don't think of it as "perv" per say...

But I have some needs. Needs that Richard Sharpe and Malcolm Reynolds can satisfy. Handily.

Together. One at a Time. Whatever. George Clooney could wait nearby, as a pinch-hitter.

Okay. Pull yourself together, girl.

Husband will be glad I had this conversation. I'm gonna go home and work out my newly imagined Sharpe/Reynolds fantasies on him.

While Netflix has its place, I'm more of "need to own" kindof gal. Cashy goodness is, well, good...but what if insomnia strikes (as it will) and I am without the Sharpe series? Or Firefly? Or Stargate? Or Angel? Or BtVS?

Yes, it's true. I work not to feed my family, but to feed my insatiable DVD shelf.

While I am a Netflix girl. I want me all. I want to know that ALL the Sharpe series ! dvd's are in reach.

When I had to wait between the Roswell DVD's it about killed me and #1 and #2. Of Course, each time a new boxset came out we got to watch the previous ones in a Roswellpalooza. To ensure that we remembered all that had gone before you see

I've started watching this on BBC America this past week, Agatsu. Sharpe is like the 1800s version of Captain Kirk, he get's a new gal every episode (sometimes even when his wife was alive), and sometimes the new girl dies. Some of them live. Some of them.

Lots of fun. The funnest being that they never show them loading their weapons, only discharging. Guess they figured reloading a muzzle loader weren't cinematic enough.

Hope you can find it. Pure guilty pleasure.

How long has that series been out? I never heard of it, and judging by the sheer amount of episodes/TV movies, it's been around for a while. Was it pre-LotR?
Sounds like fun, although that cheating-on-his-wife thing makes him sort of a hwoon duhn in my eyes.
Hm, I just checked amazon.de, and it looks like there's lots of books as well. And they have the first boxed set as a UK import - for about $US 170. That's a might expensive to just give it a try.

The Sharpe series ran in 1993. Sean Bean was a young cub then. Born in 1959, that would have made him 34, then.

Nathan just turned 35, BTW.

The complete set in the U.S. is $314. Includes thirteen, 2 hour episodes.

I'm going the NetFlix route meself. Not enough coin.

One review says that several episodes had been aired really badly dubbed on German TV, under the title "Die Scharfschützen" ("The Sharpshooters". God, I hate German titles). It also says it's historically accurate, which is always shiny.
I checked the other reviews by that guy, because he's in the Top 500 review rankings, and he seems to be quite interested in the American civil war and recommends "The Killer Angels" in one of the reviews. Unfortunately, you apparently can't CONTACT people on Amazon, because I wanted to recommend Firefly to him.

34 is a "young cub"? Shiny! And there I was starting to feel old.

I had the impression that they might be edited, because there were a couple of odd cuts. Are they even steamier than what is being aired? Oh, tell me it's true.

Also, please tell me that the DVDs are letter boxed? Oh please oh please oh please.

If so, I may have to save more money. Damn.

Back again to ponder the deliciousness that is the Bean/Fillion sandwich...

Unfortunately, the Sharpe series were put on VERY low budget DVD's. No extras. No narrative. No letter box. Still, they work just fine.

We didn't discover the BBCAmerica versions are edited until we started to watch them on DVD. Slightly more graphic. Little bit saucier language, and edited for time. Definitely get the DVD's if you can.

Sharpe is indeed excellent!

Essenitally a series of made for TV movies based on the series of books by Bernard Cornwell.

Can't comment on the yuminess of the Mr. Bean, being a red blooded male and all, but there some hot female eye candy that pops up now and again (including a scene in Sharpe's Enemy where Liz Hurley gets her norks out http://images.celebritymoviearchive.com/members/thumbs/b/bM0844-ElizabethHurley@SharpesEnemy-1.jpg). I'm very mature sort of person. Honest.

So far the TV series consits of:

Sharpe's Rifles
Sharpe's Eagle
Sharpe's Company
Sharpe's Enemy
Sharpe's Honour
Sharpe's Gold
Sharpe's Battle
Sharpe's Sword
Sharpe's Regiment
Sharpe's Siege
Sharpe's Mission
Sharpe's Revenge
Sharpe's Justice
Sharpe's Waterloo
Sharpe's Challenge

The last one was made quite recently, some time after Waterloo was filmed, which just goes to show that desipte appearing in multimillion pound hollywood productions, the living legend they call Sean Bean, still does unpretenious work like this.

Here's how it might of been http://www.stillflying.net/

you forgot thelast one Sharpe: the legend
And he did over 1/2 the sharpe's after doing Goldeneye so let's here it for an actor who's favorite thing to do of a Sunday is watch football with his daughters and who I might add turned down the roll of Strider because he has custody and didn't want to be away from his kids for too long. Also an actor willing to continue a project like Sharpe's rifles because he promised he would even if he was a big movie star:)
Edit- and a guy manly enough to begin his career plaing a hooker in the movie Winter Flight

Forgot to say, when I was in the UK, I found that their celebrities are much more approachable than ours. Well, maybe not Elton John. But certainly the actors seem so. They also don't seem to have the stigma attached to crossing into different segments of show biz as over here. Although, that is waning a bit.

Also, spend a few hours in London and it is amazin how many famous people you will see!

People who know about Sharpe! Oh bliss ...

I don't know if Sharpe would agree with Mal or try to kill him. Sharpe doesn't like the chain of command, but he does respect at least certain parts of it. I think Mal is closer to Jayne's idea of a chain of command.

We're actually having a very similar discussion on another list except instead of Sharpe, it's Jack Aubrey: how would those two get along. (going theory is they would be great friends, but neither could really command the other in any circumstance).

I see Harper and Mal getting along much better than Mal and Sharpe.

BTW: For those in R1 looking for Sharpe DVD's go to deepdiscountdvd.com best price on the 'net for the complete series.

mmmmmmmm Sharpe and Mal.

Two finer men you will not see.

Interesting point about whether they'd work together or not. Which would work better Sharpe under Mal's command or vice versa?

I'm going with Sharpe under Mal because of the afore mentioned vague respect for authority. Gorramit, wouldn't that be a fine story though!

Can't any of you fanfic guys do me a crossover? please! Think of the hilarity! (and sheer male attractiveness)
