Is it just me, or does it seem to you that the transfer of Firefly is noticably shinier than that of Serenity? It seems crisper to me, and Serenity seems to exhibit a greater degree of 'grain'.

Anyone else feel this way?

I get the feeling that either Serenity was shot with faster film to catch low light action (and it was a dark film, visually speaking), or Universal's transfer dept. (or transfer house) did a quickie job, 'cause I see all manner of grain in Serenity not even partially visible on the Firefly DVD's.
But the sharpness is equal.

Transfer in DVD terms means taking the medium, be it film, tape or digital source, and encoding it onto a DVD for viewing. Some 'transfers' from one medium to another differ in quality due to sloppy or superior authoring (another tech-term, means, like, how professional it is sort of, the have to literally project and re-photograph, digitally, a film picture for example), and others differ due to the quality (or lack thereof) of the source material.

I didn't really notice any difference in quality, but then, the second I start watching I get so engrossed in them that you could staple my fingers together and I probably wouldn't notice (please don't, though)

Actually Chris, I think I've noticed this too, but chalked it up to the style of filming and the darkness.

The actors have said in interviews that the film was meant to be grittier and sweatier, and dark...I just thought that Joss had succeeded mightily.

Well this is just my opinion, but I think that Serenity was intended to have grain. I don't think it was a problem with the telecining process, as both the DVD and HD DVD transfer for Serenity have the grain. A lot of people feel that the film grain adds to the texture of the visual experience, and is often used on movies that want to emulate the hand-held idea (like Saving Private Ryan).

I am assuming that the Firefly DVD's don't have noticeable grain since they weren't shot or produced to have it. I mean, if Fox was so hesitant to let Joss shoot in widescreen, I doubt they'd let him dirty it up with film grain.

Also as a side note, black is one of the toughest colors for a DVD player to reproduce accurately (the other being red) and if your DVD player or TV aren't adjusted properly, sometimes you can get faux grain.

Weird.... I just noticed this TO-day... I put in my new widescreen edition (purchased on S-Day) and thought I needed to adjust my tv.
