Go check out the Sci-fi section of any bookstore sometime and you will see books from just about every recent sci fi TV show and even some movies. Buffy, Angel, Quantum Leap, all the Star Treks, Battle Star Galactica has a new book, and even Dark Angel. So why shouldn't Firefly?

Every single one of the series you mentioned had at least one full season on the air, for one thing - including Battlestar Galactica. As for Dark Angel, those novels were probably already in the works before cancellation. As Firefly was cut off in infancy, no publisher is going to take the risk.

There's all manner of fine fan fic in here and out there - a plethora, even - written by folk who know their characters about as well as JW. That should tide you over until the novelization of the movie comes out, and then who knows? Maybe the market will open up.

I started a thread about this the other day, and it went nowhere, maybe because of the fact that this series died so quickly. But there is fantastic fanfic out there, that's for sure. Anyone interested should check out the fic at ljconstantine.com, and the stuff at www.fanfiction.net

Still, it would be great to have pro novels, to show FOX that there is a lively interest in the series. . . .

I was just thinking the other day, as I looked over the shelves at Barnes & Noble, how shiny it would be to find Firefly novels in a bookstore.

I have read every piece of fan fic I can get my hands on, and I am still wanting more. I am like an addict looking for that next fix; and it has been awhile!

I believe that if the movie does well, we could very well see a movie adaptation, and who knows where we go from there. Perhaps a series of novels, a new season on TV. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I'll have my husband look into this. He's written media books before and I know he loves writing them. He's done a ST:VOYAGER novel and a couple of "movie books" (IDENTITY and the who-the-hell-knows-when-it'll-ever-get-around-to-getting-on-screen EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING). They tend to be pretty easy money for pro-writers. He finds them fun to do and a kind of stress relief compared to the creation from scratch of his own stuff.

But it would mean that a publisher would have to want them. Media books make a ton of cash for the publishers, but it's always a matter of whether it makes *enough* money rather than will it make money at all. These days it's almost gotta be part of the production company's plan from the beginning to give rights to publish books. They were taking publisher's bids on Dark Angel before the series ever got on the air.

Unfortunately, media books have a VERY short life, with the exception of those based on the original Star Trek series. If they last three years after the show has been cancelled, you're lucky. Publishing isn't like television. If you have a five-year run of a TV series, you're considered pretty successful. If a book series doesn't last 10-15 years, it's considered a flop.

Your husband is a writer? Cool! I have always wanted to write, but my stuff is not that great.

Exorcist the Beginning? I think I saw a trailer for that when I went & saw LotR: Return of the King.

I don't think novels are a good fit for Firefly... The format's too different. I actually think a movie's too different a format to do it justice. If FF isn't on TV, it should be... a comic book. No other form of media is capable of mimicking the FEEL of a TV show as well as comic books/graphic novels. Movies can imitate the look of TV, but you have to structure a feature film so differently from TV... Movies are terrible for intimate, episodic stories. So are novels. JMHO.

Yep. He's an author. His latest novel just hit the shelves this past November. Strangely enough, he just got a statement about his Voyager book sales in the mail today. Not great, I'm sorry to say, but Voyager books are on their way out.

Far as I know there aren't any trailers out for The Exorcist: The Beginning. The entire script was re-written from top to bottom since the original director got fired and the female lead was re-cast. They still have a release date set for April, but I can't imagine that will hold.

As far as novels not being a good fit for Firefly, I tend to disagree. There would be many types of stories that you wouldn't be able to do, but with the depth of the characters, I think novelizations could be done very well.

I do have a lot of the same reservations about a Firefly movie as you do, Haplo. You have to cram too much into too short a time. I'm not a big fan of episodic fiction. I prefer serialization. More time for build up and development.

But anyway, the novels aren't going to happen. I asked him about it today. He said that he'd asked his agent about whether Firefly was going to have novels back when the show was on the air. There were never any plans to have any. Is anyone surprised?

BTW, even if your stuff isn't that great, Broancoat1, keep practicing! Writing is an art and if you don't keep up with your practice, you'll lose the skill. The more you practice, the better you'll get. Steven (my husband) has some good info for beginning writers on his website. You might want to take a look at it.

I wish that could be the case, but it's not going to happen. Like I said, the life of a media tie-in books series is very short in publisher years once the show is cancelled. I can't imagine that a publisher would even consider starting a series of a show that's already off the air.

Now, if a movie were to come out, I can assure you that there will be a novelization. 99.9% chance there. That will not have a impact on whether original novels will be written, however. Novelizations of movie scripts are funded entirely out of the marketing budget. They are used to promote the movie and are usually not expected to make money.

I agree. Firefly feels a lot like Cowboy Beebop--a great series and comic book, and a lousy movie. Ditto Stargate (cept the comic book part).

So the real question is--how can we get a graphic novel done?

No offense to LadyJayne's husband. I have some family friends in that line of work, too.

Hey Lady Jayne, Tell your hubby that I enjoyed the NanoTech War.

I have been thinking about writing about this for some time. I have read a ton of novels based on tv series, and have really enjoyed them. When I read a ST:NG novel I can perfectly visualize the characters and their setting, having seen them "in action".

I read the unfilmed FF transcript "Dead or Alive" and found it was like watching an episode of FF.

And, as I understand it, Joss may have some time on his hands, so I think JOSS should write novels about FF. That way we can continue to experience the adventures of the crew of the Serenity and explore their 'verse and discover more of their secrets.

What we need to do is find a publisher who is a FF fan, or find a publisher and convert them. Maybe an online publisher? Anyone with any connections there?

I would love to get the books. I went to a sci-fi book shop and was shocked that there where no books. That was a bad sign.

I cant see any books coming out before, though. I mean, wouldn't you feel really bad if you were an author and you wrote a Firefly book that revealed something big in the plot like... well, I dont know but something big. Then, the movie come out and it says something completly different.

One, they would have to appoligize to Joss and to all the fans. They could risk no one ever wanting to read any of their books again.

Two, they would feel really stupid.

So, Im not going to expect to see any Firefly book 'til the movie.

Besides, my mom (who is another Firefly fan and is the one that got me hooked) said that Joss is writing a script that will wrap up most of the stuff we had questions about in the series but will leave some stuff open or will some how end it so there is an opportunity for another series.

I would love some books but lets wait for the movie, which will be the best and most awesome movie of the year and will rock and rule the movie screens!!!!!!

Terri Osbourn, one of the Trek writers who posts on TrekBBS, has made some comments to the effect that she'd love to write novels for either Firefly or Stargate SG-1......if only someone would authorize her to do so!
