Does anyone ever get the feeling that they are becoming super obsessed with Firefly?

You realize that you've just watched the series about 4 times in a row from Serenity to Objects in Space without taking a break, or you're constantly checking out YouTube to see if there are any new fan videos, or you spend more and more time day dreaming about all of them or just fantasizing about one character in particular. For me it's usually Jayne but thats besides the point.

Today I just feel like I've been away in "Serenity Land" for a while and just now got back and am very exhausted. A part of me feels like I've been spending way too much time here but I have this fear that if I go away something cool will happen(I dont know what that might be) and I dont wanna miss out on anything. Anybody ever get that feeling?

I also feel kinda bummed. It's like the feeling of being completely in love with someone but they dont love you back. I think I'm just in a slump of frustration because we have no clue if they'll come back. Hehehe... or its probably just PMS... hahaha.. I know I'll regret posting this later but oh well. Thanks for letting me vent.

sincerely,
taira

Um, there is no "obsessed" when it comes to the 'verse. There is just the realization that this is the single most important thing in the world. Ever. And will remain so.

So concise, so true. I think fff.net has found it's Poet Laureate.

Thank you for that honor. I merely speak from the heart when it comes to Firefly. 'Tis my life, 'tis my love, 'tis my dreams.

dqbaby76:

Are you a Cubs fan by any chance?

Believe it or not, you have just learned something very important about every true red-blooded man (and quite a few red-blooded females, too). Guys are dedicated to their teams like a religion, like an addiction. It feels exactly like what you just described.

Imagine then the Cubbies fans, waiting their entire life spans for their beloved Cubs to win another World Series. They've been waiting since 1908, and are still eagerly waiting for that return to glory... And for some guys, every day brings thoughts of the Cubs and heated debates over the latest trades and whether a star player has reached the end of the road, and so on, ad infinitum.

We've been waiting a little under a year for a sequel. Kinda puts things into perspective, doesn't it?

The worst thing that ever came out of Pandora's Box was Hope. It keeps you from walking away from your dream, even when you can barely remember what the dream was anymore. It keeps us striving against all reason, clawing our way up insurmountable obstacles...

And yet "Hope springs eternal in the human breast". To be plagued by Hope is to be human. The only thing that makes unrequited Hope bearable is the companionship of others who share your dream, your heart's desire...

Welcome to the Firefly 'Cubbies'. Just keep the faith, dqbaby!

Hopefully,

zoid

I know how you feel. Every so often, one of my parents will ask me, "So...you don't really know if you'll ever get any more of this?" And I have to say no, I don't really know. But I'll keep hoping. It was the fans that brought the 'verse back from the black hole of cancelled shows and its us that'll keep it going. So hold up there, dqbaby, and remember that we're here with you too.

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

Venting is perfectly fine dq. I vent my ownself. If it really gets you down remember you can have more than one love. If you were married, I am assuming you're not, and had children, then you you would love them all. So why not love more than one show. Firefly is the best science fiction in recent history, but there are other shows. Just know that you have Firefly within easy reach when you want it. I won't even recommend anything to you. The best thing is to find the programs that please you all by yourself. Half the fun is searching for them. That's how I found Firefly.

NAUGHTYMAN

Dqbaby76,

As you can see you're not alone. When I first watched the series I wondered what made this place(the'verse)and these people so compelling and attractive.Thinking back to when I personally have been the happiest in my life,it's always been while overcoming challenges, even adversity, with a group of people that I may or may not have known, working together and watching each other's back. That's kind of the way it is with the BDH's.Joss gives them a hard world and they manage to cope and thrive.Joss describes this better than I can:"I like a hard world, but I like a hard world that molds good people and people with a sense of humor about the world they're in".Also, and this has been mentioned before, the crew are a lot like a family, something that some of us don't have much of.I see FFF.net as a community, sort of like a family in some ways. When I'm gone too long I tend to go into withdrawal.I haven't posted in about a month now and it's good to be back.
P.S. Jayne's my favorite too.You can't buy lines that good!

All of you have great points of view.

Traveler: you are definitely right about being able to love other shows as well. In fact, I am married with two kids so I totally get the concept. I do have my other faves such as Roseanne, Golden Girls, and The Cosby Show which I have watched almost everyday since I was 7.

What I find fascinating is that I've never ever taken to a show so hard and so fast until Firefly came along. It scares me a little, I think a small part of me wants to believe that there is something subliminal going on. hehe...

I'm glad this site is here because I know if I talked to non-Browncoats about this I would get responses like "Stop looking at that crap." or "You've lost your mind." I should know because I would do the same thing to people who were in love with Star Wars and played with Magic cards. *sigh* Damn Karma! hahaha...

Does anyone ever feel like they're in your head all day long?

If anyone wants to see how crazy I am about Firefly feel free to check out my myspace profile. There's even pics of my Star Wars babies! hahahaha...

Over the years, I’ve given thought to why people react the way they do to certain things. Or, more precisely, why I feel different emotions concerning things in my life. I think this applies to something like Firefly, that is, something that makes us ‘feel’ an emotion towards a particular thing.

When I was a kid I just knew that I was much happier on a Saturday morning sitting in my treehouse than on a Monday morning sitting in a classroom. But it was that feeling of comfort and happiness while in that treehouse that I always wanted to bottle and keep forever.
I would like to be smart enough to interrupt these thoughts and the reasoning behind them. I know that different regions of the brain control how we perceive things and different emotions involve different structures.

Dr. Mark George, a psychiatrist and neurologist at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Md., and the lead author of a report on how the brain manages happiness and sadness states the following:
“When a woman feels sad, Dr. George discovered with a brain imaging method known as positron emission tomography, her brain shows increased activity in the structures of the limbic system near the face, and more activity in the left prefrontal cortex than in the right......” Another key change was in the amygdala, a pair of almond-shaped structures in the limbic system. The amygdala area “activates during sadness,” Dr. George said. But the structures change only slightly when a person is happy. “The left amygdala seems to shut down a bit, while the right goes up,” he said.

He has also studied the locations of happiness and sadness in men, though these studies have not been published. He has found that the processing of emotion is yet another aspect in which the brains of men and women apparently differ. “When they are sad, women activate the anterior limbic system much more than do men,” said Dr. George. “At the same time, women seem to experience a more profound sadness than do men. It makes me wonder if this might be related to why women have twice the risk of depression as do men.”
The report can be found in the Health section of the July 11, 06 on-line edition of the New York Times.

So, this may be more than you were looking for in regards to why we get so emotional over Firefly, and it probably poses more questions than it answers. One that I have is, if all the emotions we feel are linked to the brain, why do we get an ache in our hearts when that last episode of the series rolls credits....

endeavor to persevere...

Dayve:

Thank you so much for that insightful look. What I really am grateful for, is that I actually could understand that all no doubt due to your flawless writing. I knew you were going somewhere with it and you summed it up perfectly in the last sentence.

Today I feel somewhat better, not a lot but a little. I just may watch a few episodes today if my husband will finish with his Battlestar Galactica marathon he has going. I figured out a little as to why I am bummed. See...when I do a Firefly/Serenity marathon it takes me only an entire day. I think I got a twinge jealous when my hubby decided to do one for BSG and its been going on for 3 days now. Of course he never fails to mention that BSG is a HIT show therefore theres more to watch. This is about the same time where I generally flip him the bird. haha... Even when I introduced the show to my mom she refused to finish the last episode because there was nothing more after it series-wise. It's funny how we let our emotions get tied up to things.

Thank you very much and I truly appreciate everything you said in your post. i love long replies! Thank you everyone for trying to help me get out of this slump. take care!

Maybe that's why these sites exist. Because it brings people together that understand and share something special. Firefly may have vary few episodes but Joss and his crew of "low down dirty deceivers", that's not the exact quote, made these people so human. I read other people's posts and get learn more about the show. When I've gathered up enough new knowledge I watch the series again and these insights make it new. So there are few episodes but the diamond is very small stone but very precious gem.

Enjoy
