Everything on the internet says the firefly series were based over a year with 'Serenity part's 1 and 2' and 'The Train Job' being based in MAY 2517, with 'Heart of Gold' and 'Object's in Space' being presumably a year later in MAY 2518. with the comic 'Those Left Behind' being in JUNE.
The BDM is supposed to take place 6 months after OIS. this will make it based in NOVEMBER 2518.
My theory comes from the mention of Mal saying "EIGHT MONTHS" in the movie. I think he was ment to say "EIGHTEEN MONTHS"
This is how I see it. it does make more sence to me this way.
Hope it makes sence to others.

Too be honest, i didnt know so much info existed online. Way I see it, the 'eight months' comment was correct, and the events of the series, from serenity 1/2 through OiS took place over about 2 months. But wait...

In Trash, Mal recounts that the events of OMR took place roughy 6 months earlier.

If ya watch buffy n angel, joss likes to keep everything chronological, so the summer break in the show will be a summer break, etc. So, he would have wanted trash (about half way through the season) to be several months after the earlier OMR. But whatever. Mal isnt known for perfect estimates.

Whatever, it's a continuity error, dont think too hard on it. It isnt Joss' fault that the show was canceled and he had to sum up all of firefly into a 2 month span. Eh, ok maybe, but if it had been eighteen months, that's a damned longer time that the audience has missed.

"But, these strong women characters?"

"Why aren't you asking 100 other guys why they don't write strong women characters?" -Joss Whedon

There was three weeks between 'Shindig' and 'Safe'
Our Mrs Reynolds is in October. Inara mentiones the crew will be staying in 'New Dunsmir' for 2 weeks.
Ariel is presumed to be in December with River saying 'They took Christmas away'

I think that that may be assuming too much;
I think the 'taking Christmas away' comment to Jayne meant that he didn't (wouldn't) get the big cash reward he was hoping for...

Yeah, the Firefly timeline is a bit messy. I probably has a LOT to do with the fact that the show was aired out of order initially. Or, maynot. Here's a fan constructed time-line that tried to use evidence from the show to figure out what happened when:
http://www.mts.net/~arphaxad/firefly.html

I'm in two minds about it. I thing either the events of Firefly were supposed to have taken place in a roughly two-three month period, and the line is right. Or, Joss needed to establish that Simon and River are not solid members of the crew for new audiences, and the line is intentionally inacurate for the sake of the film.

Also, One of the reasons that the timeline gets so messed up is because there seems to be such a large, implied gap between "Serenity" and "Bushwacked" -- apr. three-four months, since Inara references her coming on board Serenity in each episode, first as eight months, then as a year ago. However, the fact that Serenity was never part of the original airing complicates this a lot, since by not airing the pilot, Firefly was essentially given a timeline reset button.
