DVD on TV: A Viewer's Guide ...
by Bill Wilson

"What? "Firefly"'s on DVD? But it was only on for like six weeks!" "When are they going to release the ORIGINAL 'Star Trek' episodes in season sets?" "Who knew that 'NYPD Blue' was out? What was the big deal with David Caruso, anyway?"

That's a sampling of some of the questions I hear from folks who seem quite astounded that television is available at all in the DVD format. Many of my co-workers defer to me as the resident expert, but I thought that you, dear reader, might like to claim that distinction for your very own. So this should serve on a nice TV-on-DVD primer.

Fact is, better than a third of all DVD sales figures last year were purchases of television programs, mostly in season sets. The phenomenon has had a ripple effect in both the DVD and television industries.

Last month, FOX announced that they are giving serious consideration to starting production on new episodes of its canceled animated series "Family Guy" due solely to the strength of its DVD sales. Other low-rated programs that have done well on DVD include the aforementioned "Firefly," "The Tick," "Sports Night," and "Futurama."

There was also a blurb in this week's Entertainment Weekly about Firefly DVD sales being so good that there may be a movie made. It was just a blurb though, the bulk of the article focused on family guy and all of the (good but overpriced in my opinion) HBO sets.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not much, but better than nothing. If only a dozen or so people read that & pick up the DVD set, it is worth it.

I think it is great that so many things are being said about Firefly. Unlike some of our esteemed number, I fully believe that a movie will be made and that there is a good chance of a TV series if the movie does as well as the DVD set.

You and I are of like minds on that score, BC. JW made a great series out of a not so great movie. If he makes a movie out of a cancelled series, that revives the series? I'd like to be a fly on the wall when* he thumbs his nose at Gorram fox.

It's good that these shows are getting attention. There is so much mulah to be made there, they'd be foolish not to capitalize. I looked at the list of shows that were mentioned along with Firefly, and I must say that even though they are fine shows and deserve their own respect, they are not in the same category as Firefly. I can go for the optimist thing next time, I s'pose.

There was an article similar to that in the paper here in Tucson. I tried to find in on the paper's website but didn't have any luck. You know, I really think the word is spreading.

I think that the problem is that the TV industry relies to heavily on Nielson(sp?) ratings. By counting the total people watching a show, but not paying attention to wether it's the same people each week and how devoted they are to the program gives them very limited information.

Hopefully as 'interactive tv' (TiVo and such) become more widespread, we will see ways to rate or 'devotion' to a show and have that info passed directly on to the net.

The interesting question then will be: should I attend big firefly watching parties, or should everyone stay home so they are all counted? (or perhaps everyone leave their TV tuned to the Shiny Firefly channel on and THEN get together for a watching party!) ;)

I'm also looking forward to the day when the ratings are more inclusive and are more representative of what people are watching and are loyal to. As long as it is based on a random sample, then none of us watching tv or leaving our tv's on certain programs will amount to a hill of beans. I am in one of the top 50 markets, but have never been a Nielson home. I have never met anyone that was in a nielson home. Anybody here been included in the Nielson ratings?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
