BADGERSGIRL

Just wanted to say hi! I've been a fan of firefly since the second episode they aired. (Only because I missed "Train Job", a fact I deeply regretted!) I put the DVD series on my Christmas list, and then on December 9th I took it back off and told everyone, "Forget Christmas. I can't wait that long!" It's been Firefly heaven ever since.

I don't know why I wasn't motivated to join this site before now, but I'm joining now. I'm actually very excited because I converted my brother. I've been trying to get him to sit down and watch it with me ever since I got the set. ("Just the pilot episode, pleeeeeeaaase . . .") He wasn't interested because . . . well . . . I'm his little sister, so how could I possible have good taste in . . . anything? (I'm 30. Do I ever get to stop being little sister?) Anyhoo, he finally sat down with me to watch the pilot episode. After it was over, he sat quietly for a sec, then turned to me with a grin and said, "Another episode?" It was 2 o'clock in the morning before we finally shut it off. He now only has 4 episodes left to watch, and he keeps saying, "I can't believe they took this off the air!" and "I can't believe I never heard of this before!" I'm very full of myself.

I'm afraid I threw him a little when I told him my favorite character was Badger. I don't even know why. I blame Mr. Sheppard.

Anyway, that's my story.

Hello.

Welcome to the board!

I too am trying to convert friends to watching the show. Before the show was cancelled, I got my SO to watch it with me and she got hooked too! I managed to get a couple friends to watch it, although only one of them actually watched every ep on the DVD set.

Keep flyin', fellow browncoat.

The one person I would have converted, it turns out it's her favorite show too. Pretty cool, aye?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm afraid I've been very picky about who I try to get to watch Firefly. I'm afraid I might have to end friendships if they hated Firefly. I too few friendships to afford losing any, so better not to risk it! LOL! I just had a feeling about my brother though!

I didn't know until tonight that mei-mei meant little sister. I thought it was just a generic term of endearment. I think I won't share that tidbit with my brother. OTOH, I have caught myself using Firefly terminology in my head. The day I use it out loud, however, I will worry.

No, the day you start looking in your rear view mirror to see if Reavers are chaing you or develop a phobia of Blue gloves and mittens, then you need to worry... but not until then.

Nice to see you and welcome to the 'Verse

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome BadgersGirl! Always a pleasure to welcome another fan to the site. Seems we have a might few fans popping up since the DVD set hit the market.

Badger is a good character, but I kind of think of him as small time as far as nemesis characters for Mal & crew go.

Hope to see you posting often. Make yourself at home, read the threads & fanfic and jump in where you have a mind to.

Wow - I'm totally in awe. I've tried to get my brother into it, but I don't think the Serenity Pilot moved quite fast enough for him. I'm determined to snag him, though maybe with Jaynestown. His name's Jay and he's a borderline Jayne kinda guy, so I figure it'll be a good way to hook him in.

*snicker* ah, no. Just like I'll never be anything but my brother's bossy big sister. Some things just ain't gonna change - sad but true.

Shiny! Same thing happened with me and a friend of mine AND her husband. I was there for the weekend (the same weekend I adopted one of her kittens, my Shuai Simon), and brought along the TRS80 bootleg DVDs that went around a few months back. We were just going to watch the pilot, then go do something else. We ended up watching all 10 then-available episodes. I don't know what time of day it was - really didn't need to.

Good on you, BadgersGirl!

Point of Interest: My cat is named after Simon because he was going home to live with me and two other women and didn't know what the hell he was getting himself into. My favorite character is and always will be Mal. From the moment those magic words came out of his mouth ("To-whubba-who?") *swoon* I was hooked.

Don't mock me. I'm Badger's Girl, and Badger has big men with big guns.

Granted, in real life, Badger is someone I would steer well clear of. But this ain't real life, it's tellyvision, and I like having Badger on mine.

I love the entire show, don't get me wrong, and there isn't a single regular character that is dispensable, as far as I'm concerned. Taken as a whole, the CREW of Serenity would definitely be my fav character, but taken individually it's hard to pick a fave. Of the regular cast my list of most to least favorite is Jayne, Kaylee, Wash, Zoe, Mal, Simon, River, Inara, Book. But like I said, put 'em all together and you have a damn fine show.

But Badger - Badger has a charm all his own. I think he's a lot like Jayne, but substituting brain for muscle. I'm not sure I'd watch a show that revolved around Badger, but in the scope of Firefly - I know when Badger walks on my screen, it's gonna be fun.

It don't hurt that he looks good doing it.

My brother was already a sci-fi fan, which helped, though not so much television, but books. In fact, I wasn't even a sci-fi fan pre-Firefly!

Believe it or not, I actually noticed the show because of Nathan Fillion. He was on one of my favorite sitcoms of all time, so when I saw he was doing a new show, I had to check it out. Ironic, eh?

I know what you mean about so much to read and so little time. Luckily my job allows me access to the net, & sufficient time to read & post.

As for Badger being a necessary evil, I think that is a good way of summing him up. He is really not powerful enough to be a nemesis, though he can make things rough on Mal & crew when they enter his sphere of influence. He does make for a colorful character when Mal needs to find work.

I agree with all of the above, but I would take it a step further. Not only is he not powerful enough to be their nemesis, I don't think he's interested in being one. I think he needs them as much as they need him.

CHOSEN

Wow just found this site and I was floored.I could not believe my eyes to see that there was an entire site devoted to firefly. When I had heard that Joss was making a firefly movie a while back I had to stop and wonder why even try.The show was a low average at best and I can see why it was dumped.

First off before the flaming starts let me say Joss is a genius and I loved all of his other shows. Most of the firefly cast rocked especially Fillion.I really do not think special effects make a good movie or tv show I believe it is the acting and writing.I did think firefly's effects were good and so was the acting. The writing for the show as always with any of Joss's projects was awesome but the show was severly lacking in several areas.

Many of the episodes excluding the dialogue and acting were very boring. The few episodes that got on the air did not draw me into the storyline at all.In fact the way the first few episodes went it came off as a bunch of entertaining people flitting through space cracking snappy dialogue.Myself like many people I have talked to just lost interest in the show do to a lack of surrounding story set up.Everytime that something about why they were fleeing or any other interesting fact about the universe was mentioned they would drop it.Then the crew would just scamper off into the galaxy on there next bungle.

The wild west feel was also a bit much. You will be hard pressed to gather major interest in a show that portrays a high tech adventure at one point and then a campy western outpost town at the other.

I really wish firefly was a better show because I think it had great potential.I think for one of the first times in my life of watching tv firefly was the first show that spent too much time on character development and not enough surrounding world creation and development.

Oh well I felt like saying my peace on the subject and if any one has retorts they are very welcome.

May the devil find out you are dead 30 minutes after you reach heaven

You did not reference watching the DVD's in your post, so I assume you have not seen every episode filmed in the order they were intended. I think once you view the box set you will realize what an injustice that network did to the show. Watch all of the eps on the set and then get back to us. If you have seen the DVD's, then my mistake, and you are entitled to your opinion. But if the movie is made, give it a chance.

Ditto what CaptainCDC said.

It sounds like you had the misfortune of catching the sporadic, out of order airing of the episodes on the Fox (read F*#k) network. I would suggest picking up a copy of the DVD set and checking out the show from the beginning, in the order they were intended, starting w/ the full length pilot "Serenity". I think you will find it changes your mind.

Just curious.....if the show did not catch your attention, and it appears from your comments that you did not like the show from what little you saw at Fox, why then did you seek out a Firefly site and post? Just curious.

I think missing the first episode of the show gives you an advantage.

I myself decided not to watch 'The Train Job' when it aired, as the Fox promos hadn't made it look too appealing. However, the next week, I found myself watching 'Bushwacked'. I had little understanding of the charactors and plot, and was therefore playing catch-up the entire ep. I think that if I'd seen the Train Job, I may have attributed this to the show (rather than Fox), and given up on the series.

Nice with the brother conversion. So far, I've shown the entire seires to five friends, and three disks are currently on loan to a cousin, a co-worker, and a friend's mother. No one in my immediate famialy has seen a single episode yet, as the DVDs spend little time at my house!

A friend copied the dvds, and sent them to his brother in Cali, who showed them to several people. I've made fans on both coasts!

Anyways, uh, hi.

I never thought of it that way, but I think you're right. If I had watched from what I would have assumed was the pilot episode, I might have figured the show for too confusing. As it was, what I didn't understand I attributed to the fact that I had missed the "pilot".

Oh. No. No, no, no. These DVD's do not leave my possession. (Much to my brother's annoyance!) I couldn't afford them to begin with, I can't afford to replace them! LOL! Besides, watching them with him makes them fresh, because he's smarter than I am and he picks up on things I don't.

I agree. It seemed to be a total rip-off of the abyss, but it was just a sci-fi made-for-TV movie, so what can you expect? I didn't like the fact that the good guys won. That sucked. Chomsky got smooshed.

PS - I read your profile, and I'm right there with you on Two Guys and a Girl. If Nathan Fillion hadn't been on that show, I might not ever have taken note of Firefly.

Actually, I have a funny story about that.
Okay, I was WAY addicted to Two Guys and a Girl when it aired and even afterward. So then this show comes around called Firefly, and my dad is like, "Hey, Joss Whedon has a new show". I thought the premise sounded a little weird. I'm not into space movies or westerns, but I watched it because I knew Joss wouldn't settle for a crapjob. Then I see Mal. And I'm like "Who IS that?! I've seen him before!" And it drove me NUTS until the show was over and I looked it up on IMDB and then I started screaming because I was so STUPID not to recognise him.
Yeah. That's my story. I'll stop now.

Tell your friend s/he did it wrong. You are only supposed to make a copy of the pilot to give to people, then when they get hooked on the show, tell them to buy the whole DVD set! That's the only way to drive enough sales to bring Firefly back!!!

Thought about doing that...instead, I gave them the first three DVDs. I'm sure that after watching so much of the show, they'll be forced to buy the last three eps.
