Last I read, Joss said he was finished writing the script, and that it was the hardest thing he had ever written.

Universal is/was waiting on the script before making a decision. And yes, it seems to be done. (At least the first draft.)

Anyone know who's directing it? I haven't see Joss direct a movie yet - will he be doing it himself?

Last I heard, Joss was planning on writing the script (which appears to be finished) and make his directorial debut. Can't wait to see what he does. Sure it will be great.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

According to Browncoats @ the LA Convention last month, Joss confirmed the script is done, & as Astriana wrote, he said it was the hardest thing he had ever written.

No news yet on who would direct. I think it would be cool to see Joss direct, but I think he will pull out all the stops w/ the movie & give the director's seat to whoever he thinks is the best man for the job. This could be his last chance to get someone to pick up Firefly so I am sure he is going to want to present the best possible film to Universal.

That's really interesting. It will be good to see how this turns out. Usually (unless if you have plenty of friends in high places), and if you are trying to get money from the studios, "first time" directors don't get to do their own film initially. What's Universal's track record in this? Even Terry Gilliam with demonstrated writing and directing experience initially had to put out two other studio movies before they funded him on his own.

Anyone know what the studio moods are nowadays? I can't imagine it to be anything less than cautious; and from what I've seen in the pipeline lately, certainly nothing other than sticking with 'safe' formulaic crap - pairing up unlikely male-male leads in good cop/ stupid cop movie, or extremely unlikely male/female lead romances. Gag

When talks about the movie first started, it was announced that Joss would direct. Now, since the movie hasn't started shooting (or even been officially announced yet), obviously anything could still happen. But I think Joss has been burned enough times not getting to direct his film scripts. No direct, no original cast, no go.
