and a Firefly marathon is on Sci-fi today!!!!

I guess that if you get taged to do this it is only for one week. What are the odds that these two circumstances would come together? I feel like I'm really doing something that will matter, at least I hope so.

You are. They calculate it for the entire population of the country. So if they send out 300 diaries, and there's 300 million people... you count for a million people.

You are so lucky to get the diary this week!

DATALESS

I don't know how it works but tell them that there were a couple of different people watching and that some of them left (life a friend or two) and they all seemed to like it and that some people joined you for later 'sodes. Also have like 5 people watch your favorite 'sode.

'Sode: (origin: Wonderfalls) 1. An occurrence of a usually recurrent pathological abnormal condition 2. A part of a broadcast serial [syn: installment, instalment] 3. Film consisting of a succession of related shots that develop a given subject in a movie [syn: sequence]

As far as I know, it doesn't work like that. We got a radio Neilsen once, and we just wrote down what we listened to and when in a log. I think for TV, they put a Neilsen box in your house, which keeps track of the channels/shows that you watch.

That's how they do t.v., too. I don't have a box or anything. They sent me a log book to fill out.

For radio, Arbitron is the biggie. Every once in a while someone resurrects Birch, but they can't compete with Arbitron. Heck, even the US government has allowed Arbitron to define what constitutes a "market" for FCC regs.

Arbitron sends out a diary for each person in the household that is supposed to be filled out moment by moment as the week passes, then on the next thursday another diary will come. So naturally all of the diaries are ONLY filled out on thursdays and radio stations schedule all the big contests accordingly. It is woefully inaccurate because it doesn't measure what you listen to, it measures what you *think* you listened to. Also, to save on waste exposures and cut costs Arbitron tends to send diaries to households that returned diaries before, guaranteeing both that diaries come in cheaply and that the sample is not random. My station got screwed by that EVERY spring book. Apparently the peopple on the spring list just loved my competition; it was a perfect see saw from fall to spring every year.

TV is rated by Neilson. They have 2 systems. One is basically the diary method while the other uses set-metering boxes. They use both in part due to the fact that set metering boxes can't really tell if someone is in the room watching or not, just if the tv is on. Also because diaries are just so much CHEAPER.
