I realize that I'm setting the octobitch bar really high today, but this is just too good to pass up.

Quote:

2. Dueling: No one is invincible. Only one move at a time. No chopping off limbs or people unless the other person agrees... Respect the other persons moves, and play off them. Remember that dueling is defense as well as offense.  Do not force anyone to accept any moves, always give them a chance to defend themselves or avoid the attack.

That's from the rules linked on the role playing site. I think we should adopt the rule: "No chopping off limbs or people unless the other person agrees" for this site too. I mean, chopping off people...you really ought to have permission before you do that.

Oh, well I havent heard about your RPG, sorry.

But still, The point of this RPG is differnt, instead of playing the characters from the show you make your own. An hey, theres plenty of room on the web for both of us. (ill change the thing about first though.)

In case I haven't brought it up today:

"There will be no chopping off limbs or people unless the other person agrees."

Just so we're all clear.

Well, we let people play both characters established on the show and their own characters. As far as being first, we started on Feb. 9, 2003...so I don't know that we're the first Firefly RP, but we're the first (and now only, it seems) journal RP for Firefly.

Well, play by email RPG's have been popular in the Trek arena for over a decade. Everyone creates a character bio which is usually posted on a website along with ship specifications. One person, the GM, is responsible for the general direction of the game.

He creates the basic storylines, plays many of the NPC's (non-player characters) integral to the story, and frequently plays the Captain. (A position of authority helps to push the story close to the plot points.)

Each player writes actions and dialogue for their character, and possibly they create or use some NPC's as well. Their creative talent may take the basic plot into unexpected twists and turns, possibly even shifting the story somewhat off course to what the GM had envisioned. (This is actually okay if the GM is equally creative and can improvise.)

There are mailing list services which all the players are subscribed to. Send an email to the list (Fireflygame@topica.com) and all the players get it. It's a collaborative writing effort. Here is an example of a Trek post so that you can get an idea of what PBEM (Play by email) is like:

ON:

The medical examination had gone on without incident. Now Adal had spent the better part of an hour engaged in a most strenuous exercise regimen. His body glistened with perspiration. Sweat dripped down from his harline through his forehead, being intercepted by a god-given brow before it could sting the eyes. "The body really is well designed," he thought to himself
as he ordered the computer to save the program for later use.

"Computer," he spoke a new request to the omnipresent computer system, "time."

Most people spoke up at any given moment, confident that the computer would hear their request so long as they prefaced it with 'computer.' The ominous side of that equation was seldom considered. If the computer was always ready to answer you, that also meant it was always listening. Adal's thoughts briefly visited the new computer specialist on board, and how she could be used by the Section.

But that was for later. One problem at a time.

"The time is Nine-hundred hours, Ship Standard Time."

Adal frowned. Not much time for conventions. "Computer, simulate a sonic
shower unit, type standard to Defiant class vessels."

A sonic shower dutifully resolved itself before him. He stripped down and entered the unit, pressing the activator that would begin the showering process. He tried not to let it bother him that the sonic shower wasn't
physically connected to anything. He also tried not to let it bother him that the entire unit had resolved itself in the middle of a 15 foot by 15 foot gridded room. He allowed his intellectual understanding of the process to squash the anachronism of it, and enjoyed the ultrasonic waves that tickled sweat and grime from every pore of his body. A gentle antiseptic mist rose around him in concert with the waves, smiting millions of unseen germs. The sonic shower really was an efficient concept.

Not that it would ever be as appealing as a good soak.

When the shower was complete, he ordered the computer to replicate a new uniform and recycle the old. This, it also did dutifully. The holodeck was by necessity crawling with replicator units. Anything that might be
consumed or carried off of the holodeck had to be replicated. Water, food, and clothing fell into that category. Adal remembered with amusement that in the early days of holodeck development, more than one person had changed
clothes inside the machine, only to step out into the world a naked man. And of course there were those people who had replicated feasts, only to have the food dissolve as it touched the tongue. It was quite a tease.

But those days were past, and when Adal stepped out of the holodeck, he was gratefully fully clothed in his duty uniform. He proceeded immediately to the lounge to meet with the good Counselor. She was a lovely lady, but he
worried that she might make a good target for the Section. She had the earmarks of a weak will, and access to every psychological profile aboard. If ever there was a likely candidate for recruitment, it would be her.

On the other hand, she might not be what she appeared. In which case he could eventually relax his scruitiny and enjoy her company.

As he entered the lounge, he found her there ahead of him. Early. Ninety percent of the women he knew got to places late. She was here early. He flattered himself to think that meant she was looking forward to the date.
Stopping off at the bar, he ordered up a Sumerian Sunrise. He brought it to her, bowing as he set it on the table before her.

"For she who brings light to the darkness." As the glass hit the table, he lifted its lid, being sure to knock the lip ever so slightly with the rim. The harmonics of the crystal set the reaction in motion. The layers of clear etherous mist in the container collapsed upon one another, condensing into fluid as they sparkled throughout their transformation. At the bottom of the glass, the liquid brightened gradually from a warm, soft glow to a bright light, before fading away entirely and leaving a half-ounce of delectable nectar. It was a non-alcoholic beverage, but Adal found it to be intoxicating nonetheless.
