I just wanted to point out to everyone that the DVD for Fox's Paris Hilton-based reality show "The Simple Life" will be out TWO DAYS after the season ends. And we had to wait nearly a year. Those bastards.

That's because Simple Life was quality television. You put all the time and effort into finding someone with star quality like that, two of them no less, and you get magic. I mean, the chemistry between NIcole and Paris? Phenomenal. With all the research, dedication, and effort put into that show by Fox execs I'm surprised it wasnt better recieved. The ... how can I even put it ... complexity of the interactions of the people in that town was just priceless, as was the power in the scene with the cow. My God, I think America should riot- riot I say! - because that DVD isnt coming out the very day after it ends!

I personally didn't need another reason. Between cancellations of shows like Family Guy, Futurama, and of course Firefly, they're pretty much iredeemable. If it weren't for The Simpsons, I'd probably never watch Fox again.

Somehow, I dont think you'll have to worry about that- I'm pretty sure that goes without saying anyway-
And here's something I dont get- I buy DVD series for the dialogue, the acting, etc. etc., to get commentary on shows that have at least some meaning (I just picked up Bab5 S4) or have great writing- Why would you even buy Simple Life on DVD? I was told by a friend who watched it that they get fired from their job at one point; How many times can that be funny? What I'm trying to say is, I'll get on here, read a post about something in an episode, and re-watch it to see if it affects how I viewed the show- What more can you even get out of two rich idiots getting fired from a burger joint? There's no symbolism (unless you count the show as a symbol that America is dumbing down ) or meaning there- Can anyone please tell me why people are obsessed with watching other people look stupid? Anna Nicole, Simple Life, Newlyweds, etc. - Frankly, watching people that stupid gives me a migraine -
Just curious-

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

The sad thing is that "The Simple Life" (read as Simpleton Shameless Attempt at Ratings) got good ratings while it aired. Looks the ratings floated somewhere between 3.4 & 5.4. I would account most of that to the sex tape scandal of Paris Hilton & Fox shamelessly playing on that notoriety. Guess morals and the shameless pursuit of money & ratings don't mix.

Bottom line is that lots of men tuned in to watch that garbage wanting to ogle Paris Hilton. Personally I do not see the fascination. I do not think she is that pretty and she has all the personality of a cardboard box. Of course at least the cardboard box serves a purpose which is more than can be said for our Ms Hilton.

I bet the DVD will sell, but will not match the numbers of viewers that tuned in to the show.

Fox is the devil. May they burn in a special hell.

A friend lent me the series on Saturday and I finished watching it yesterday. Throught the entire series I kept muttering to myself, "Man, I hate FOX." But at least there's now a bit of prescident.

FOX wants to bring Family Guy back apparently. Due to the DVD sales and the fan base, they think it's a "Sure thing" now. So, maybe they'll do the same with Firefly. Though, hopefully, Firefly can go to another station (Still waiting on the actual answer to that poll) that actually knows how to schedule a TV show.

Plus, there's the movie coming out. Scheduled (did I read that right?) for 2005, I hope it doesn't resolve a damn thing with any of the characters. Doing so would be a self-admitting nail in the coffin of the series.

Anyways, here's to hoping. Later.

The idea has circulated that perhaps w/ the precedent of Family Guy that Fox might reconsider Firefly due to the better than anticipated DVD sales. Personally I would not want Fox to handle the show again. Their bungling the first time around nearly killed the show permanently, and I would be hesitant to give them another crack at it.

With Universal buying the rights to the show, at least as far as movie rights go, I would like to see it on Sci Fi. More Sci Fi fans would have a chance to see it there, and it would be a better fit in keeping with the line of programming.

Let's all hope that the excellent DVD sales shows Universal the potential of the show as a movie, and that the movie surpasses their hopes. If it does, perhaps we will see Serenity fly on the small screen again.

From what I have gathered Family Guy is probably going to come back, but most likely it will only be on the Cartoon Network not on Fox. Major networks just do not bring back a series after it is cancelled. I guess they do not want to set a precedent that people will hang over their heads in the future. Like everyone else here I would love to see the show come back to tv, but I do not think there is a chance in hell of it coming back to fox (not that I would want it to come back to those bastards). Also, let's not forget that SciFi had a chance to pick up the show after fox gave JW permission to shop it around and they passed.

By the way, Boomer, you're not the only household left without cable or a dish... Ours is also without either, by choice, because so far there's been no point in spending an extra $50 or more monthly for one or two channels with something worthwile one. However, if SciFi or some other cable channel were to pick up the future Firefly series (assume the sale, folks!), I'm sure we would order cable in a heartbeat.

I don't think I'd want SCI-FI to pick it up. A few years ago, I could turn on SCI-FI, and there would be quality science fiction/fantasy programming. Oh yeah. And Stargate: SG-1 hadn't yet entered Full Suckitude Mode. Now, I turn on SCI-FI and I get B movies about Sasquatch, or documentaries on tin-foil hats who claim they were "enlightened" by the lizard people from the fifth dimension. That's not sci-fi. That's paranoid schizophrenia. I'd rather have Firefly picked up by someone who isn't slowly descending into a cesspool of psychosis.

Oh good. Now I can vent. I won't be sarcastic. With regards to Fox network: If I really want to see reality tv I'll watch the news. When I watch tv, I want to be entertained. Not by a bunch of idiot nobodies, but by trained, professional actors, comedians, directors, writers, etc. I can't think of anybody dumb enough to buy dvd's of a reality show. When someone from a reality show is on Leno or Conan, I have no idea who the hell they are. They aren't celebrities and I don't give a crap about them. Fox used to be a network I watched quite a lot, until they decided to go "network" and act like something they're not. They need to get back to innovative, groundbreaking concept shows like they used to have on. Because what they have on now isn't cutting it! Don't laugh, but the WB has some pretty good shows on by the way. 'Nuff said.

As much as one may think Sci Fi would be a good home for Firefly, I'd say I'm glad they passed on the show.

Just look at their recent treatment of great space sci-fi shows. As stated in an artical on B5TV.com, Sci Fi seems to be distancing itself from any and all space bound science fiction. The cancelation of Farscape dispite superior ratings, the fact they had J. Michael Straczyski (sp) on board to do a new B5 spin-off series and let it dwindle into the void, and their total support of landbased sci-fi like Stargate and X-Files, all signs that the Sci-fi channel is no longer what it once was.

And I'm sure that if they did pick up the rights to Firefly, they'd only mistreat and abuse it, much like Fox has.

And as a fan of Serenity and her crew, I'd rather that not happen.

And I've gone off on quite the rant now ^.^;; What a way to join the forum...

Don't know if I agree w/ you on all the points.

Never was a big fan of Farscape, so I won't comment on that one. I was disappointed to see B5 go, but they still run it in syndication on Sci Fi. I was kind of disappointed that they never did anything w/ B5: Legend of the Rangers after the pilot, and that B5: Crusade only turned out to be a mini series.

I would not say that Sci Fi is shying away from space based sci fi. Look at the new Battlestar Galactica that they released in December. They dumped a lot of time, money & effort into that one, & it based in space. They advertised the heck out of that mini series too. I would say that is proof enough they are not adverse to space based programs.

Could it be that they have not found programs or concepts that fit into the current execs profile of shows? I don't have the figures on Farscape's ratings, production costs, or know any of the behind the scene goings ons that may have caused the show to end. I do know that B5 had run for awhile and they wanted to call it quits.

Granted, yes, they put a lot of effort into the Battlestar Mini..

but their commitment to it has yet to be determined, as according to Cinescape it's up for a 12 episode series. (Which I personally would love to see, because the Mini left far too many unanswered questions) If they sign it for a season, then it's possible there may be hope left.

But if they let this too dwindle away, I may take the advice of many 'Scapers and stop watching Sci Fi all together. I rarely watch it now as all they run are Horror Movies, Stargate, and X-Files.

Okay perhaps that's unfair, they do run some decent shows in the mid-day. But I personally would rather watch reruns of seaQuest and First Wave then The Sentinel and Crossing Over.

There is also hope because, if I'm not mistaken, Sci Fi recently changed ownership, or rather, it's parent company did. And hopefully they'll opt to bring back more Sci-fi and less other stuff.

Only time will tell.

If they have signed on for 12 episodes, it sounds as if they mean to pick it up in the summer when everyone else is running reruns. Would help to boost ratings, but that is awhile to wait for the show to debut as a series. Of course if it is only 12 episodes, they could tack the mini series on at the beginning to refresh the audience on it and fill more time.

Of course they may mean it to come in during spring. Stargate SG1 ends in the spring, so they may put it in that slot. Seems unlikely, but it is possible.

I don't care much for daytime programming, but I am at work during the day so I guess it is not that important, as it is pretty much filler anyway.

If I remember correctly, Universal (who owns Sci Fi) just partnered w/ NBC. Maybe we will see a revitalization of true Sci Fi on the channel.

Has anyone ever mentioned HBO, did they try them for the series? I was watching the other night and HBO has a new series coming out that is a western! It looks expensive and interesting. It seems that HBO would be perfect, they can handle an expensive series (they would probably only have like 12-15 episodes (instead of usual 22 for network tv), they could say and show whatever they like (paytv!) and if anyone has noticed lately, they have some great executives over there, look at their choices in shows: they pretty much rule at the emmys nowadays.

Is there any way we can get off this kick of insulting the potential audience? I see this as self destructive.

You tell me you think I'm stupid for liking something you don't, no matter what the reason is, or how justified you feel, that's it. I ain't gonna listen to you any more. You tell me this other show is great, so what, you also told me I was stupid, and you were wrong about that, and rude to boot. So why believe you about this new show.

What it will do is create a loss of credibility, and the appearance of a kind of snobbishness. It will ensure that Firefly remains a cult show, and never break into mainstream, (who wants to associate with such rude fanatics) Which means no finanical backing for a new series, as it will drive people AWAY, because they will think we are all fanatical snobs.

Look, I think Firefly is better than Star Trek TOS. But I realize that in art in television there is no objective standard, and hense no truth as to what is good or bad. Without truth, terms like "stupid" become nothing but personal opinions, insulting self destructive ones at that. The closest thing there is, is ratings, how many folks watch the program.

And I also know that Firefly sells itself. Its not that people are stupid, so much as most folks did not even know it was on, and never saw it. Let them watch a couple episodes of the DVD, and they are hooked.

I just have one point about your whole argument. If we're going to talk about "art", then comparing "Firefly" to "The Simple Life (or any other reality show for that matter) is like comparing the "Mona Lisa" to a developmentally-disabled patient urinating on a canvas and then smearing his face in it. Admittedly, a rather vile, revolting comparison, but then again, "Reality TV" is vile and revolting, and it contributes to the increasing amount of acceptable stupidity on the loose.

Now, I have no qualms about letting that DFM programming on the air. First Amendment and all that. My problem is that quality programming not only gets cancelled but actively squelched, so that DFM programming can take it's place.

They can have my "Firefly" DVDs when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers....

"That's because Simple Life was quality television. You put all the time and effort into finding someone with star quality like that, two of them no less, and you get magic. I mean, the chemistry between NIcole and Paris? Phenomenal. With all the research, dedication, and effort put into that show by Fox execs I'm surprised..."

..Not to mention the really excellent special effects and writing on the show.. who wouldn't want that DVD sittin' on their video shelf? (sic)

That article is too funny. The author left out a few shows, like "Survivor", that stupid model show on UPN that they cancelled "Jake 2.0" to air ceaselessly (talk about cruel and unusual), "My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé", "The Bachelorette", oh God, no more, no more, no more...

I read this whole thread and my mouth is still hanging open--they put that show on DVD? Huh?! I can't imagine why anyone would buy it.

And as for the theory that it's to jack off to Paris Hilton it seems to me the twenty seconds of Inara bathing would be far more of a turn-on then ANYTHING with Paris Hilton. I would think the mythological scene of Jayne bathing would be more of a turn-on--Paris Hilton is yuck.

TOOMANYMEMORIES

I felt like half of my brain cells died from just watching the commercial for "The Simple Life". If some people out there actually made it through an entire episode of that travesty Fox has the absolute gall to call entertainment, without turning into a vegetable, then they are stronger than me.

I don't even watch Fox anymore. I've given up on "The Simpsons" and "That 70's Show" because I can't stand the thought that I might be helping that network in any way.

That's good to know. But I wouldn't care if they hadn't, I refuse to watch Fox.
