Dearest Buffistas:

Email newsletter "AOTS Daily Onslaught" carried an item regarding the July 17th installment of "The Feed", stating that:
Quote:

"Sarah Michelle Gellar is so desperate for attention, she's going to take her clothes off to stay relevant. I've got the perfect script for her, it's called, "Sarah Michelle Gellar's Floppy Cruise to Topless Island."
(See also: http://tinyurl.com/9yzhf for the news article that spawned AOTS' response.)

Okay, so assuming that AOTS owner/operator G4 Media, Inc. (a subsidiary of Comcast) know a little something about libel laws, we'll conclude that the news item was verified, and that Ms. Gellar actually made those comments...

My questions are:
1. Do we care? If so, why? I don't see why a woman appearing topless in a movie is substantially different from a man baring his chest (or butt, Nathan) in a filmed entertainment. How exactly did a woman's breasts come to be labeled as 'genitalia' in the first place? They have nothing to do with the reproductive process, regardless how much fun they are to look at...

2. I thought SMG was one of those glassy-eyed Neo Christians. Won't she get excommunicated for such action? Ditto for even entertaining the notion publicly? *zoid affects Morgan Freeman voice from "Shawshank Redemption* "Oh, Freddy! Oh, Freddy..."

3. I forget what number 3 was going to be about. I mean, I know I had a question #3, but all this talk about women's breasts has driven me to distraction. Maybe the puritanical idealists are correct, hmmm?...

In conclusion, I don't think there's anything wrong with SMG taking off her top -- and bottom, for that matter -- in her next movie. I think women should have the same rights as men, not only in movies, but in the 'real world' as well. So, the next time you ladies see a man working shirtless at a construction site or in his yard, you should immediately whip off your own tops (you can continue wearing your brassieres only if the men are wearing theirs), strictly as a statement of equality, of course...

Shirtless, Even As We Speak,

zoid

P.S.
Although the AOTS item and posted reference are as genuine as the Internet on which I found them, my comments are made in the spirit of poking fun at the inconsistencies of Western religio-ideologies. Please don't take them as anything more serious. I'm sure SMG is a perfectly lovely young woman, both spiritually and physically (with a likewise perfectly acceptable 'rack-for-hire')...

P.P.S.
Aside to Morena Baccarin:
SMG is an astute observer of the acting game, if not necessarily an accomplished player. You would do well to consider her 'topless' strategy for garnering movie roles. I mean, I guarantee you would get multiple $7.50 admission fees from me, and I feel I speak for all the male (and more than a few female) Firefly fans as well...
(NB: Just joking, Morena... But seriously, how about cutting your fans a break and getting nekkid? I'm kidding... *Nods head*... *smiles disarmingly and shakes head*... *affects serious look and nods head slowly three times*... *iterate for at least 2 minutes, a la Eddie Izzard*...)

I think the whole thing over being topless is so much more complex than what you've made it, Zoid, though I mostly agree with you.

There is nothing dirty about a woman's breasts, exactly the opposite, but our culture sees them as something dirty, and distracting. Truly, most times when you go see a movie, if there are breasts shown (and there are some major exceptions) it throws you from the story. We're so used to watching TV, where there are no breast shown.

As a, ahem, glassy-eyed Christian, and I have no problem with nudity, done in the right context. If children aren't exposed to it (that's in a sexual context), I simply don't care, but if I'm watching a movie, and its not gratuitous, you tend to be in the story so much it doesn't matter.

The main problem is America's great problem with being both sex-obssesed and sex-phobic at the same time. We see sex (and it is usually portrayed as) something dirty.

I think its incredibly unfair that full frontal shots of men are completely taboo.

And the whole bra thing, well, that's just fashion. I promise, when corsets come back in style, we'll be more PC.

Plus, Natalie Portman's doing it.

Well, as I stated, I was being satirical. The topic is obviously more complex than a library full of essays could reasonably cover...

I myself am a Christian (though not a 'glassy-eyed Neo Christian', a different dissertation for a different venue). We are as God made us. I would like to see more nudity, not less; although of the entire gamut of adult ages and races, not just wafer-thin, never-pregnant, 20-something, blonde females with silicone-infused 'breast substitutes'. As far as children seeing natural nude images of the sort I've just described, I think a lot of unhealthy 'body image'-related mental and physical conditions would thus be averted (read: eating disorders and derogatory self-images).

As long as the only socially acceptable images of nudity are those of (often surgically achieved) physical perfection, no person whose body falls elsewhere within the wide-ranging human norm will be acceptable. Time for a reality check, for our children's sake...
Quote:

*gulp!* You mean she's 'doing it'... right now? How can you possibly know that?
(NB: Okay, seriously. Do you mean Natalie is doing nudity in a film or that she's wearing a corset. I'm confused, but happily so...)

Only Slightly More Seriously,

zoid

P.S.
A person can be naked in a movie without engaging in sexual activity. I sleep naked. I shower naked. Furthermore, my wife and I occasionally engage in sexual activity while not being completely naked (or even topless)...

I don't know that it's necessarily wrong to let my children (boy 13, and girl 16) see actors depicting semi-nude, non-explicit sex scenes; although, I admit it undeniably makes me uncomfortable. But, since I believe that the sex act is both normal and natural, I try not to overreact by being too serious or too flippant. I want them to know that sex is a crucial part of being a healthy human being, not something 'dirty' or depraved. I also want them to know that an unhealthy midset towards sex (mostly just thinking that the manifest sex drive itself is 'dirty' or depraved) can lead to diseases of both the body and mind...

I stress to them that the sexual urge is just like any other bodily function: Like eating/drinking, eliminating bodily wastes, exercising, or even learning, all things must be done in proper balance, responsibly, and at an appropriate time. Okay, so, sometimes sex can be better done when not exactly perfectly balanced; but you know what I mean, and I don't tell that to the kids. Somethings ya gotta learn about for yerself.

But, hey, that's just my parenting style, not necessarily anyone else's...

and there i was expecting it to be a 'made you look' 'stead i got a good giggle out of it

SMG lately is too thin for it to be hugely attractive, if you could see her breasts it'd only mean her ribs were on hugely public display as well (and probabaly more prominant)(why oh why can i never learn to type 'more' and not 'mroe'...reached the point i automatically delete and retype the last three letters)

anyway, likewise happily confused by hearing said news about natalie portman, who i'm inclined to think is EASILY the best looking actress on screen. (i know all the dialogue to garden state except for here scenes...i loose concentration [okay so kidding, mostly])

Then you should rent "Closer". Natalie. Lingerie. Pink wig. Lighted stage with fireman's pole. Lap dancing.

P.S.
The story itself is very original, if somewhat potboiler-y and tedious. But, Natalie's character -- quite apart from the skimpy outfits -- is well-performed (and Oscar-nominated) and compelling...

See what happens without careful editing. I meant that Natalie is going to do a nude scene in her new movie. She famously refused to do one for Closer, even though it involved the exciting wig and pole and everything. I believe the reason she agreed to do the scene had to do with it not being sexual at all, but she's being tortured.

I, personally, am not of the scary Star Wars kind of fan that has a live video feed to NP's shower.

Now, about Alan Tudyk, well...he's taking a nap. Usually hops in about 7:30 am.

Oh, and completely agree with the whole unrealistic body images.

Now, if you'd said Kate Winslet...

As far as AOTS, their style is more 'irreverent' than 'intolerant'. Meaning: Lighten up a little. They were just taking a (unsympathetic, yet ultimately playful) shot at an unemployed actress who's cruising full-steam-ahead toward official has-been status. The fact that she seems to realize that, based on her comments, does her credit...

I would just think that she might try something along the lines of 'working for scale on an indie film', before deciding she needed to pimp her boobs to revive her career...

I think the point he is making is she has to take off her cloths to be relevant in Hollywood...relevant= working actress...The difference is that Sharon Stone can "act" that is why she is "accomplished. She would have roles even if she didn't get NAKED...thank the fraking gods she has the desire to occasionally disrobe. Sarah? not so much...just my opinion...

Dude. Don't start setting up the pedestal. I'm just another human wending my way through Life and learning the hard way, by making mistakes and drawing back a bloody stump as feedback. I'm nothing special, except to the extent that every human being is special...

...Or at least we have the potential to be special, if we'll listen to the Love in our own hearts, rather than always trying to strictly conform to some society's approved methodology of thought/behavior.

I'm just trying to share my viewpoint, man. If you find something you like, take it for yourself, try it on for fit, adapt it to your own Heart and Mind, and then pass it along to others. Same as I do...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is a lot tougher -- and more enlightening -- than it initially appears. You wanna see a world brimming with love and mutual respect and acceptance and... well, all the good things you could possibly imagine? Follow that one Christian Rule and you'll have it.

Why? Because in order to treat the Other as we ourselves would be treated, we first have to understand the Other and what is important to them. It's a fundamentally unattainable goal (because we are, all of us, fundamentally separated from each other), but earnestly trying to attain it anyway is both self-actualizing and instructive. It'll teach you about others: their needs, wants (there's a difference), fears, hopes and motivations. And it'll teach you to critically compare your own motivations to theirs, showing you which of yours are less than noble; it'll evaporate most of your common fears and prejudices (same thing, imo); and it'll teach you just how much you have in common with all the other imperfect, self-absorbed, lonely, frightened, error-prone human beings on this planet.

Mostly though, The Golden Rule teaches this: If you want to be loved unconditionally -- even when you're not at your best -- by everyone around you, you must first likewise love everyone around you, even when they are not at their best. And when I say 'love everyone', I don't mean smiling blankly and hugging them; I mean loving them to the same depth of soul you would like to be loved...

See? I did it again. But, I'm just sharing what my unique experiences and reflections have taught me, not preaching the gospel...

Actually, I didn't know that. So, thanks for the info.

Being a male with a measly 154 IQ, I wouldn't know MENSA from 'onset of menses', except to say -- quoting the inimitable Groucho Marx -- "I would never belong to any club that would admit me as a member."

I will also say that very few of the people I most admire would qualify for MENSA. There's more to character than intelligence, wouldn't you agree?

Hey, no aggro on my part. The assertion that Ms. Stone is a well-respected actress, though, is definitely debatable. Her recent "Basic Instinct 2" was met with almost universal ridicule.

Still, the infamous 'smoking beaver' scene from "Basic Instinct (1)" does earn her some dubious distinction in movie history, I suppose.

...and like I said, if you'd have asserted, "Kate Winslet had an extensive topless scene in 'Titanic' and yet she is still a highly respected actress," I'd have readily agreed with you. Same goes for Gwyneth Paltrow's (Oscar-winning, frequently topless) performance in "Shakespeare in Love"...

But I still would have disagreed in principle that the article's author was being "sexist" or deserved your "". I think you overreacted; but, maybe not. Maybe you understood that the author was just taking the mick, and still found it that viscerally offensive...

An intriguing thread. Given it's authour, I'm not surprised.

I humbly submit a couple of thoughts.

One, is that I've seen a marked decline in gfn* in Hollywood's film releases the past three or four years. I've made no statistical survey, so all I can say is that though I may well be wrong with such an assessment, I do work in the cinema post-production industry and have seen a lot of films, and am hard pressed (oh dear!) to recall the last "A", or even A- list actress that doffed her clothing to the final cut. Feel free to fill in the gaps, but b4 Stone, was it Ryan? Ah, but of course we could argue whether or not SMG belongs on any list approaching such a lofty grade, at which point I give up.

Secondly, there's what I would refer to as a sort of Puritanical momentum. For example, I posit that in my home province of Ontario, Canada, it has for 6 or 7 years been legal for women to doff their tops in public in exactly the same measure as men have been allowed to do since... many decades ago. Yes, womenfolk here can walk down the sidewalk, bare-chested, just like any guy. Women can shop in any mall, clad only in sunglasses above their shorts... and wouldn't I be right there if'n they were into that relaxed level of shopping, eh? (Think: air conditioning). And, I ask rhetorically, since the law has allowed it, guess how many Ontarian women have I seen topless in public, including beaches? (I'm into kayaking, so I'm often at beaches).

Here's a hint: place your bets on single digits. Aside from that first week when local strippers paraded about advertising their "wares".

Nudity's only going to be marketable so long as the commonwealth remains "puritanical". Or, until we all get nekkid, eh?

Heh-heh. You know, when I started this thing, I really wanted to solicit the opinions of Buffy fans regarding SMG's latest declaration. I've heard so much glowing praise of Buffy -- and of SMG as her portrayer -- as a Feminist Movement heroine. The idea that SMG's seriously considering baring her breasts in order to shake the movie role tree is bound to have some repercussions on that image, n'est-ce pas?

Then I went and spoiled it all by getting "intriguing"...

...And you're right. There's entirely too much wardrobery going on in Hollywood. *affects Jayne voice* A movie without breasts is like... well, a movie without breasts, gorram it!

Also, I hope those Ontarian prudes will loosen up a little and improve your mall experience, very soon.

Boobily,

zoid

P.S.
Obviously, with the exception of the first paragraph, I'm just joshin' with you. Seriously though, I'd like to see nudity-as-a-commodity become unmarketable, because it will have become so commonplace and realistically portrayed in the movies that it no longer titillates (pun intended). Then men and women both could be free of it...

P.P.S.
Frankly, Meg could've left it out. They couldn't save the movie, and Mark was a bigger boob than both of hers.

It wouldn't be that relaxed a shopping experience if'n you an' a bunch of other guys were there to ogle, would it? ;)

Actually, it's an interesting question -- even if one were totally relaxed about their own body, they still might not want to be stared at by others, the vast majority of whom would be excited, embarassed, or disapproving. I like wearing shorts, but if there were a mall where everyone ogled my bare knees I think I'd avoid it. ;)

I agree, there's that egregious transitional phase, what with all the ogling. I would also admit to being one of the many egregious oglers. I thank me for not being perfect, on account of how I've only this one life, and only a finite amount of beauty within that life for me to experience.

Yep, I've never thought that womenfolk had it easy. However, I do think that Sarah Geller's got it easier than me, what with the extra millions in her bank accounts that I, for one, don't have. (See how hard I work at attempting to segue to the the topic?)
