Question: Does Mal have a problem with head cover. During the battle scenes against the alliance he's running around without a helmet then later he says something about Badger having a very fine hat.It doesn't really point to anything but then again in the same eps on Whitefall he looks at Two-Fry and says " Two-Fry,nice hat."

It just had me thinking. Maybe in his childhood on the ranch on Shadow he always wanted a cowboy hat and never had one. Or maybe someone he didn't like always wore a hat. Whatever it is Mal seems to have an issue with head gear. While Jayne will put anything on his ruttin head he gets in the mail.

RUGBUG

There was a what seems to be short-lived thread that the bad guys wore hats. So putting Mal or Zoe in a hat would equate them with the bad guys, especially in the first few episodes.

Yeah, I agree with that. But I have no doubt that Two Fry was wearing a hat because he was a bad guy. And that this was done on purpose.

And specifically a black hat, at that.

The only character on Serenity who consistently wears a hat is Jayne.

Joss did say at one point that he had taken that from the western Black Hat/White Hat, except that in Serenity the heros don't wear hats.

So. What does that say about Jayne, I wonder?

As Jayne's hat isn't really a hat, it could be ambiguous. He wears a head covering, but not a "hat"; therefore, he is not a really bad guy, just leaning in that direction...make sense?

As far as the hats are concerned, it's more a matter of association...the bowler hat is always associated with Badger, the Alliance officers are associated with hats. Jayne is associated with one hat, even if he wears many...his cunning hat. The rest of the crew have no association with any specific hat, regardless of when and if they wear one. Am I wrong in this?
