As mentioned before i got to know about firefly through spotting nathan fillion on buffy season 7 as the excellent CALEB.His talk less kill more approach to the role was excellent just check out the episode Dirty Girls one dead slayer ,one slayer with broken arm ,one slayer battered(buffy),one season regular eye pulled out (xander) and not forgetting calebs showdown(s) with Buffy. After reading a few posts on this site about sarah m gellar being a diva and a right moody git nathan must of loved knocking the crap out of her . i think sarah m gellar is great as buffy and didnt know she was or is a diva, well you learn something new every day.

Totally - the only problem with the whole scenario was since Caleb was the bad guy, it meant he had to lose - and I thought the whole magic axe thing was a teensy-bit stupid

Other than that, it was fantastic!

i DO aim to misbehave

As far as I know, Nathan's never said anything about how he felts about working with Michelle, whereas he used the word "sparkling" to describe Alicia Silverstone during his brief stint on Miss Match and has had nothing but shiny-goodness to say about his female costars on Firefly. Methinks Nathan's momma taught him the same rules that Thumper's momma taught him in Bambi:

"If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say anythin' at all."

Mind you, that's just a theory

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I think Nathan did a fantastic job as Caleb on Buffy. I loved the episodes w/ him in it, and his brutal treatment of the slayers was a real departure from Mal and roles he had played in the past. I kind of liked his character, even if he was a bad guy, and I found myself laughing at his quips and banter.

Oh yeah. Magic items falling from the sky to beat the un-beatable bad-guys in S7 just struck a chord with me. One of those "Bad writer! No biscuit!" kind of chords. That magic axe and the all-powerful amulet that Spike ended up with should have had PLOT DEVISE stamped into them in big red letters. Actually, come to think of it, I think I saw those words on them.

But yes, Fillion put on an amazing performance as Caleb. He was down right icky. I love that in a bad guy.

I have no comments on the diva rumors, however. I try hard not to pay attention to gossip about people I've never met.

The one thing that struck me most about Caleb was Nathans use of the accent...

A bit different than the one he uses with Mal, but both were greatly effective in giving a feel to both characters.

Loved it

Yeah, but you gotta love that moment when Buff runs into the room where the embedded axe is stored, and Caleb says something like "yeah, okay now you found it, but let's see if you can remove..." followed by a short fight scene.

In spite of that, though, I gotta say that I don't know what some of you guys are smoking. I thought the Caleb character is pretty much a sub-par villain-on-a-stick Buffy fodder. Nathan's got that evil look down, but the writing (as others have noted) is spotty in that seventh season in general. Pound-for-pound (too many hyphens in my post) it didn't compare to Firefly.

Sub-par powerwise doesn't bother me. It's the emotions that a villain can evoke that interest me. Caleb's ickiness for me came from his misogyny, not how tough he was. Same with Warren. I find Warren to be the scariest of the Buffy villains. It's not likely that you'll live next door to a hell god, but it IS possible that you could live next door to a guy who beats up and/or kills his ex-girlfriend when she gets in the way of his power trip.

You are right; the writing was not up to snuff for much of S7. Most of it from my perception is that by the end of 5, I could smell Whedon's formula from a mile away. But the one credit I will give to S7 is that he didn't try to use good-guy-goes-bad for the fourth time. I REALLY got sick of that one.

Clarification: by "sub-par", I meant that the quality of his characterization was below average. I blame the writers. You are right that the power--physical or otherwise--is irrelevant to the drama quality.

The only thing that kept me from watching buffy was that they really didnt go anywhere. It was always in sunndale or close by. firefly on the other hand was always moving the only place they went to often was persephone

For me, Caleb saved an otherwise lackluster season. I was so tired of the slayers in training scenario, and then comes along one of the best baddies yet. Evil and magnetic at the same time....almost like Spike!
