In which... I'm afraid I really have no clue what happened. People ran around. There were assassins. Sybil learned that her cousin is dead, and for some reason Wolf seems to think there's a bomb in Pain's bunk, although how it got there, and where it came from were never explained, foreshadowed or understood.

13 has left Serenity and is working for the Alliance killing Reavers. Somehow, I think he'll be back, although he may be more dangerous to us than ever!

We've taken on Choo as a passenger; unfortunately, he's confined to the sick bay, since Ertia shot him. *ooops, sorry!*

We're open to all authors and writing styles. This thread is just for fun! However, we do ask that a couple of simple rules be followed:

No killing of other authors characters or of canon characters. In that vein, try to keep canon characters acting like themselves.

Please try to post with consideration for fellow authors and with some consistency to current story-lines.

Sub-plots are great and we welcome them, but please try to make them fit into the current stories as much as possible.

Oh, and please keep things as close to PG as possible. If you have a more adult scene you'd like posted, send it to me and I'll put it up at my Ripway site.

John ran onto the ship and looked around to see no one However he could hear hurried noises from up stairs he followed the noises to Pain bunk to se Wolf digging through his closet a feeling of fear reeked from him.

Pain appeared to be helping by looking on him and shouting explecitives.

John couldn't help wondering if this happened a lot.

*Wolf found what he was looking for and shouted*

GOT IT!

*In his hand was a black rectangular object about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Wolf quickly climbed up the ladder and ran out of Pain's bunk. As he made his way out of Serenity, Wolf glanced at the display on the top. It was counting down fast and Wolf pushed himself harder. He ran out off the cargo bay and threw the device as far as he could. The counter on the device reached zero and in a flash of bright light and with a very loud boom, the bomb exploded. The blast wave was strong enough to fling Wolf into the air and make him land in a pile of horse droppings about fifty feet away.*

Pain scanned the area twice before he saw Wolf stagger towards them. Everyone held their hands to mouths as the stink of horse crap filled the air. Pain said to Wolf*

Oh geez what the hell? Wolf you smell worse than Jayne's bunk.

The reason everyone's yellin' is because Wolf is temporarily deaf from the explosion.

*Ertia cringes as the smell of horse poop enters her nose and continues*

And the reason for the stench is because Wolf landed in some horse crap.

*Mal shouts*

*Pain and Wolf stop shouting and turn to Mal. Mal says to everybody in a irritated tone*

As much as I'd like to stay out here and yell my lungs out. I'd reckon it'd be best if'n we went inside and continue to discuss this in a more civilzed and less irritatin' manner. Dong ma?

*Everyone nodded and headed back inside. Mal stopped Wolf and shouted*

BEFORE YOU JOIN THE REST OF US IN THE GALLEY, PER-MAYBE-HAPS YOU CAN TAKE A SHOWER FIRST!

*Mal cringed at the smell as Wolf replied*

*Mal did his best not to throw up as he closed the cargo bay door. He walked over to Wash and said*

*Wash made a face as the smell still lingered in the cargo bay and replied*

Personally I don't mind it one bit. Kinda reminds me of home.

*Wash and Mal give Jayne a look as the merc heads to the galley to get something to eat. Mal turns back to Wash and says*

*Everyone went to do their usual tasks. Kaylee went to the engine room to fuss with the engine, Simon went on attending to his patients and trying to keep River out of trouble, Book was helping Guy finish washing the dishes, Fly was in her bunk looking over the map of 13's, Jayne was working out, and so on.*

*Wolf had finished his shower, his hearing had come back altough ther was a slight ringing in them. He thought to himself as he got dressed*

I suppose the good doc can do somethin' 'bout this here ringin' in my ears.

*Wolf stepped out of the shower room and proceeded to the infirmary.*

Meanwhile in Pain's bunk

*Pain and Ertia were tidying up Pain's room after Wolf's little frenzy. Pain checked one of his rifles for any signs of damage and said to Ertia as he put it away*

Remind me to put a better lock on my door.

*Ertia smiled, wrapped her arms around his waist and said*

But if you did that then how'd I be able to sneak in here and have my way with you?

*Pain chuckled and closed the weapons locker's door. He turned around in Ertia's arms, kissed her and said*

Now you know if'n I did get new locks put on my door, you'd be the first one to know the code. Now before I get distracted by what you're hands are doin' in my pants, why don't we finish up with the cleanin'?

*Ertia frowned and removed her hands from inside of Pain's pants. She pouted and said*

*Pain smiled and said*

If you help, you can continue what you were doin' just now.

*Ertia smiled and said*

Well then lets get this stuff put away.

Meanwhile in the galley

*Mal and Zoe were going over the contents from the safe with John, as Guy and Book did the dishes. Mal sighed and said*

Where in the hell is Wolf? He owes me an explanation as to why there was a bomb on my boat.

As John fiddled with a broken valve of some sort hoping to get it functioning again, he found himself needing some more tools for this to work. "Captain how bout I take the rest of these parts and go down to the engine room to fix um with Kaylee."

"Just don't let anything happen to my ship while you're working." As John made his way to the engine room a box of parts slowing him down sligtly he hought of possible explinations of the bomb in Pain's bunk that didn't involve Wolf trying to kill them. He couldn't think of many. John knew Wolf was a good guy even if he didn't appear to think very much of Wolf. He just thought Kaylee deserved better. Like a doctor or something

*Ertia laid on top of Pain her body sheathed in sweat. She listened to his heartbeat and smiled as he carressed her back. She brought herself up, bringing her lips to his, and said to him as she kissed him*

*Pain smiled, ran a hand through her hair, and said*

*Ertia smiled again, looked at the display on the wall, frowned and said*

The display says it's 2400hrs but I'm not tired.

*She looked at Pain, saw the smile on his face and heard him say*

Well I know what we can about that.

*Ertia smiled then squealed as Pain brought her closer. Their bodies were entwined with one another's as they made love a second time.*

Meanwhile in Fly's bunk

*Fly studied the map for the upteenth time. She sighed and said to herself as she put the map away*

Well I certainly have the time to study this map thoroughly since we won't be headin' to Osiris anytime soon.

*She stretched, looked at the time readout on the vidscreen and yawned. Fly got out of her chair and plopped down on her bed. She turned off the lights and stared at the ceiling, letting sleep slowly overtake her.*

*Ertia nuzzled against Pain's neck as they slept. Pain smiled and pulled Ertia closer. She smiled and squirmed as she made herself comfortable. On the bridge Wolf was in the pilot's seat taking over for Wash, everyone else was either sleeping or doing the nightly security sweep. Wolf checked the readouts on the screen and adjusted their heading as neccessary. Wolf almost dozed off when a proximity alert went off. Wolf looked at the information scrolling across the screen and hit the button for the com*

Captain sir I think you might need to come to the bridge now.

*Mal stirred and got up. He walked over to the com, hit the button and replied*

What is it Wolf?

*Wolf replied over the com*

We're about to be boarded sir.

*Mal replied*

Ai ya!

*Mal got dressed, climbed out of his bunk and entered the bridge. He looked at Wolf tiredly and said*

Who is it?

*Wolf shook his head and replied*

Don't know sir I tried to hail them after I called you but they wouldn't answer.

*Mal swore switched on the shipwide com and said*

ATTENTION ALL CREW WE ARE BEING BOARDED! ALL GUNHANDS REPORT FOR DUTY!

Meanwhile a few thousand kilometers from Serenity's outer cargo bay airlock.

*The Black Dragon's pilot said to the Captain*

Cap'n shall I hail them.

*The Captain, a woman of Asian descent, mid 30's, shoulder length black almost blue hair, two pistols in shoulder holsters, and very attractive replied*

Yes Mr. Janis please hail them.

*Janis hit the ship to ship com button and the Captain said*

This is the Captain of the pirate vessel Black Dragon. You're about to be boarded. Please do not resist us or we'll open fire.

*Mal's voice came over the other end*

Geez lady when ya put it like that I guess we have no choice then do we?

*The Captain smiled and said*

Yes I guess you could say that.

Back on Serenity

*Pain woke up at the Captain's message. He managed to get out of bed and get dressed as Ertia still slept. He put on the shoulder holster with the Ruger in it and climbed out of his bunk. He made his way to the cargo bay with the others and said to Fly*

So looks like we're goin' to be boarded by pirates. Sounds like wacky fun to be had.

*Fly smiled and said*

Those stupid hun dans are goin' to be sorry they messed with us.

Onboard the Black Dragon

*The modified cargo vessel extended its outer airlock seal and sealed itself to Serenity's outer airlock. The Captain and a dozen armed mercs waited inside of the cargo bay as the airlock pressurized. The Captain nodded to one of the men to open up the door. The man nodded and did as he was told. The Captain looked at the others and said*

Lets do this and remeber shoot anyone who tries to stop us.

*There was a loud roar of agreement as the thirteen armed people headed for Serenity's outer airlock door.*

Onboard Serenity

*Every able bodied gunhand waited in the cargo bay, hiding. The only ones who weren't hiding were Mal, Jayne, Zoe, Fly, and Pain. The five of them were standing in the cargo bay when the airlock door opened and twelve armed men and an attractive yet armed woman entered Serenity's cargo bay. The woman scanned the room as her men aimed their weapons at the five people in front of them. The woman recognized Pain, walked over to him, slapped him hard and said*

Hello my dearest Pain remember me?

*Pain rubbed his jaw as the others looked at him in suprise. Mal replied*

Uh Pain you know this woman?

*Pain checked to see if his jaw was alright and said to Mal while still facing the woman*

Yes I do Captain. Hello Lee nice to see you again too.

*Lee smiled and said*

It's Captain Lee Mr. Pain. Captain Melanie Lee of the Black Dragon.

Six minutes earlier
*Ertia had woken up and found Pain gone. She got dressed and snuck into the cargo bay. She had hidden herself behind some crates when the airlock door opened, and the woman and men came in. She listened to them and was shocked when the woman mentioned Pain's name. She had to control her temper when the woman slapped him. Now the woman was talking to Mal. Ertia watched from her hiding place.*

*Captain Lee said to Mal*

You are the Captain of this vessel are you not?

*Mal replied as one of the men shoved a rifle barrel into his face*

Yes I am Captain Lee and what's your business onboard MY ship.

*Lee smiled, walked over to Pain who had a gun traineds on him, ran a hand down Pain's chest and said*

I'm a pirate Captain...?

*Mal replied*

Harbatkin I'm Captain Harbatkin.

*Lee continued*

As I was saying Captain Harbatkin. I'm a pirate and we're here to steal things of value. Be it guns, food, valuables, or a certain man.

*Mal raised a hand, smiled and said*

Um I'd like to know how you know Pain first before you ransack us.

*Lee chuckled and replied*

Of course Captain. You see Pain worked for me some years back. Even had a relationship with him too. But that all changed when he shot and killed my former employer. You remember him don't you Pain?

*Pain felt a gun jab him in the ribs and said*

My mind's a little bit on the fuzzy side. Could you refresh it for me?

*Lee smiled and with cat like reflexes roundhouse kicked Pain in the head. Pain spun in the air and landed hard on the cargo bay floor. Lee put a combat booted foot on his chest, unholstered one of her pistols, pointed it at Pain's head, and said*

You killed my father Pain and after eight years of trying to track you down, I've finally found you and now I'm going to kill you honey.

DRPAIN


Ok wrapping up my little sub plot.

*Ertia had watched Captain Lee kick Pain to the floor. It made her mad that some lady dressed in black and who was very attractive would hurt her man. In a bit of rage (and possibly some adrenaline) Ertia pulled out a gun, aimed it at Lee and yelled*

B**** GET OFF MY MAN!

*Lee saw Ertia just as something hot hit Lee's chest. She staggered back, looked at the wound, and said to her men before falling to the ground*

KILL THEM!!

*At that moment Mal yelled*

NOW!

*Up above on the catwalks the covered figures of JR, Sybil, Guy, and Wolf rose up and opened fire on the armed men from the Black Dragon, careful not to hit Mal and the others. Ertia hid amongst the crates as bullets whizzed past. Pain unholstered his revolver and fired three shots at three of the men standing close to him. They went down just as Pain rolled away, firing the three remaing shots at some others. Zoe took cover behind some crates and fired off a few rounds of her mare's leg just as Guy mowed down one of the armed men. Captain Lee laid there a hand over her chest. She thought to herself as she dragged herself towards some cover*

Whoever that little b**** was she's a horrible shot. And just look at what she did to my leather jacket UGH!

*Lee checked her wound, unholstered her other pistol, and thought*

Did hit nothing vital. Good if I make it out of this I'll show Pain and that little whore just what I do to people who make me angry.

*The gunfire ended as all the men who had boarded Serenity were dead or dying. Pain stood up from his cover and walked over to the others. He was just about to say something to Fly when he felt the cold steel of a gun pressed against his head. The familiar voice of Lee sounded in his right ear*

Drop the gun Pain and noone gets hurt.

*Pain chuckled and said*

Well looks like that's already happened.

*Lee jammed the gun to Pain's temple and said*

Shut up Pain. Alright everyone drop their guns or Pain and everyone else dies right here and now!

*Lee still clutching her chest wound and pressing her gun to Pain's head, slowly made her way towards the airlock. Mal sighed and said*

Alright everyone drop your guns.

*Mal looked at everyone and yelled*

THAT'S AN ORDER!

*The sounds of guns dropping filled the cargo bay. Lee smiled and said*

Good. Now I want to see that b**** who shot me again.

*Ertia hesitated before stepping out into the clearing. She held the pistol at her side and said, her voice trembling*

P..please do..don't shoot h..him.

*Lee smiled, cocked the pistol and said*

Oh you mean like this?

*Before Lee could shoot Pain, he smashed Lee's right knee cap with his boot. She fired the pistol in the air and screamed in pain. Pain grabbed her gun hand and pulled Lee close, pinning her arm between them. Pain looked into Lee's eyes and said*

I'm sorry for this...honey.

*BAM*

*The gun had been angled so that as the bullet left the gun it went through Lee's heart and exited through her shoulder blade. Lee's mouth gaped open as she slumped to her knees, the life fading from her fast. The last thing she saw was Pain's face, a single tear running down his cheek. Lee fell to the ground, the gun still in her hand. Pain wiped away the tear, turned to Jayne and said*

Get me some HE grenades now.

*Jayne stood there and said*

Why Pain whatcha need grenades fer?

*Pain glared at Jayne and said*

GET ME SOME GRENADES IT NOW!

*Jayne backed away and said*

Alright Pain don't get all pissy 'bout it.

*Jayne ran to the weapons locker and took out three HE grenades. He ran back to Pain and handed them to him. Jayne said to Pain as he eyed the grenades*

Is that enough fer what yer gonna do?

*Pain set the grenades to their maximum time limit, took off his belt, and wrapped it around the grenades. He said to Jayne as he walked over to the airlock door*

Yeah three will do.

*Pain turned to Mal and said*

I want you to close the airlock after I toss these and tell Wash to get us out of here quick.

*Mal nodded, walked over to the com and pressed the button*

Wash go for hard burn on my mark.

*Wash still a little tired replied*

Yes sir Captain.

*Mal clicked off the com and nodded to Pain. Pain activated all three of the wrapped grenades, ran through the passageway, and chucked them into the Black Dragon's cargo bay. Pain closed the Black Dragon's airlock door and ran back into Serenity's cargo bay, as Mal closed the door, hit the com and yelled*

OK WASH NOW!

*Serenity bucked as it tore away from the Black Dragon. The pilot commed Captain Lee and said*

Ma'am shall I open fire? Ma'am do you read me?

*There was a loud explosion in the Black Dragon's cargo bay. It appeared to look like a power conduit blew and ripped a hole in the hull. The crew of the Black Dragon all went to deal with the sudden power loss, as Serenity high tailed it out of there. Pain looked down at Lee's body, felt the familiar hands of Ertia on him, and turned towards her. She said to Pain*

You loved her didn't you?

*Pain sighed and said*

Once a long time ago.

*Fly walked over to Pain, hugged him, then said in a cool tone*

You have some explainin' to do. Like why you two were in a relationship while you and I were at the same time.

*Ertia let go of Pain and said*

I'd like to hear that too Pain.

*Pain nodded and said*

Well I guess I owe you two ladies an explanation.

*Ertia replied*

That you do.

*The three of them headed to the galley as Mal said to the rest*

Ok folks lets clean up this mess. Jayne you and Guy dumped the bodies in the lower cargo hold and space them dong ma?

*Jayne and Guy nodded as Mal said*

Alright people lets get to work!

Onboard the Black Dragon

*The alarms sounded as the power went offline and the life support failed. The explosion had caused the power failure as it had sent shrapnel into the power conduits underneath the cargo bay floor, and created a rather large hull breech as well. In the Captain's quarters a little girl was picked up her mother. The girl was seven almost eight, she had the same black hair as her mother, but had the complexion and eyes of her father. There where tears in her eyes as she said to her mother*

Mommy is the ship dying?

*Captain Lee kissed her daughter on the cheek and replied*

Yes sweety it is and we must hurry to the emergency shuttles.

*The little girl sniffled and replied*

Is Aunty Serena coming with us?

*A tear rolled down Melanie's cheek. She had made her sister go in her place for fear that something like this would and did happen. Melanie wiped the tears away from both her and her daughter's cheeks and said*

I'm sorry honey she isn't. Now go pick something that you don't want to leave behind and lets go.

*The girl sniffed and said*

Ok mommy.

*The little girl ran over to her room and picked up two of her most favorite things, a teddy bear and a capture of her father. The little girl said to her mother as they made their way to the emergency shuttles*

Is Aunty Serena in a better place now?

*Captain Lee replied to her daughter*

Yes she certainly is little one.

*The girl looked at the capture and then said*

Will I ever meet daddy mommy?

*Lee looked at the picture of Pain, smiled and said to her daughter*

Someday sweety someday.

*The two of them boarded one of the shuttles along with four others. The paneling from the fake exterior cargo containers broke away and the shuttles made their escape from the dying ship.*

Onboard Serenity

*Pain sat at the table in the galley, looked at the two women sitting across from them and said*

I suppose I should start at the beginin' right?

John had watched the whole event from high in the rafters with River. When he saw Pain go to shoot Lee he wanted to scream out not let a loving sister take that blow. Her last thought he felt stronger than any feeling before. Last thoughts were often like that. As they started storing the bodies John realized tears were running down his face. A person like this made him never want to kill again. Her last thought last feeling rang in his mind. A feeling of regret of failure of making the ultimate sacrifice without even succeding.

"Did her words echo her feelings"

"More than you could imagine" John turned and watched as the bodies were piled up. He knelt and said a prayer for them. Then he turned and walked away.

That'd be nice Pain.

*Pain nodded and said*

Right ok. It was eight years ago, I had the job of assassinatin' the leader of a tong called the Black Dragons. The description was simple: Infiltrate the gang, get close with the leader, then kill said leader. So I did exactly that I joined the tong sayin' that I was a top notch assassin. The leader Huang Lee took a likin' to me and apparently one of his daughters did too.

*Fly interrupted*

Daughters as in more than one?

*Pain nodded and replied*

Yep twins named Melanie and Serena. Melanie was the one who wound her way into my heart. It was supposed to be strictly professional, just wine and dine her then kill her dad. But alas such plans like that usually don't go as planned. Me and her had a relationship and yes there was sexin' involved.

*Pain could see the sadness and hatred in Fly's eyes as he continued*

Long story short, I did finally assassinate her father, Melanie and her sister found out and they've been trackin' me ever since. But I assure you I don't have feelin's for her anymore and I'm sure you two saw that when I shot her.

*Pain looked at Fly with sincerity in his eyes and said*

Fly we've been through the rough and tumble more times than I can count. I know I've done some stupid stuff in the past, this bein' one of the more stupider. All I ask is for your forgiveness.

*Pain turned to Ertia and said*

I'm trully sorry Ertia and I hope you can forgive me as well. I know we haven't been in a relationship for long, but I'm hopin' we can still be together. It's your decision Ertia.

*Pain sat there, his eyes looking at the table as the two women thought hard about what Pain had said.*

The fury against the woman who had tried to kill Pain faded, and Ertia sat quietly, Jayne's best .38 still clenched between her fingers, trying to process what Pain had said.

Finally, she raised her eyes to his, her heart aching at the expression she saw there; regret, pain and sorrow. She tried to keep her voice even, keep the fear from choking her as she spoke, "Pain, what's past is past. But I gotta know... you had a job to do. You let her love you and then you betrayed her.
I know it ain't got nothing to do with you and me. But I gotta wonder, I gotta know... would you ever betray me like that? Hurt someone I love, just because the money was right?"

Just saying the words out loud hurt with the sting of old betrayals. She'd only just begun to trust again, and now, it was all doubt once more. In her heart she knew, no matter what words he said now, it was going to take time to find that trust again.

Ertia reaches across the table and squeezes Pain's hand, "I'm still here. I'm not going anywhere. But I need to think things through, 'kay?"

She glances over to Fly, who's knuckles are white where her fists are clenched, and gives her friend a small smile before letting go of Pain's hand and standing up. "You two talk things out. I'll be around."

With a last attempt at a smile she turns around and heads down to the cargo bay. She hadn't had a chance to buy boots on Three Hills and Wolf had lost one of her sneakers when he tore apart Pain's bunk looking for the bomb, so she was barefoot when she stepped down into the cargo bay.

Jayne is just finishing up scrubbing blood splatter off the mule and she taps him on the shoulder, and holds out his pistol. "Borrowed this. Thanks."

Jayne looks at the gun, then up at her, his eyes narrowing in thought. "You keep that one. When we get a clear spot I'll teach ya how to keep care of it."

She tucks it into her belt, "Thanks. You need any help down here?"

"Nah. 'Bout finished." He hands her the bucket full of bloodied, mucky water. "Ya can dump that for me if ya want."

"Thanks." She rolls her eyes and goes to dump out the bucket, wondering what else can possibly go wrong today.

*Fly smiled a cool smile and said*

I want that rocket launcher of yours. I'm still a little mad at you but as I've said before, I forgive you. Now if you don't mind I'm goin' to take that rocket launcher now.

*Fly got up and left for Pain's bunk. Pain sat at the table, staring at it. He thought to himself*

Well I've managed to keep the two women I love in my life. That's gotta be somethin' right?

*Fly emerged from Pain's bunk carrying his rocket launcher and the bag of rockets. She glanced at him and said*

Don't do somethin' like this ever again dong ma?

*Pain only nodded as Fly headed for her bunk.*

she took your ROCKET LAUNCHER?!?! Way to go, Fly!


Ertia dumps the bucket and returns it to the storage closet. Then, she simply stands there under the catwalk, her back against the closet door.

She can hear Shepherd Book in the infirmary, talking to Choo, JR and Sibyl, his voice low and comforting. They're talking about solar flares, the speed of light through the vacuum of space, terra forming...anything but the grief and the hurt.

Jayne's finished cleaning up and is settled on the weight bench, more playing with the weights than truly working out. There's a quiet security there, a feeling of sureness. Inara is carrying a tray of tea into her shuttle, crossing the catwalk with deliberate steps, the delicate smell of jasmine and mint filling the air in her wake.

Somewhere, Kaylee is laughing and it echoes in the hallway.

This was Serenity.

Her engines hummed and the vibrations rolled beneath Ertia's bare feet. She tilted her head back against the doorframe and let the tears come, the quiet, tired tears that come when the confusion is too great to leave behind.

Mal had told her that she had to trust sometime. That if you never had anything worth losing, you never had anything worth living. But the voice in the back of her mind whispers, "How can you trust anyone again? You think you know them. You think you love them....think you love him.

Can there be love where there was no trust?

Would she ever be able to really love anyone again? And was it fair to him to stay with him when she wasn't sure that she could?

Hidden beneath the stair, she let herself slip down to sit on the floor, the polished steel cool beneath her as she tilted her head back and let the tears come as Serenity's voices sang to her in the Black.

John sat above and listened to Ertia cry. Feelings of confusion were gliding of her into the air. He slowly walked down and turned to face her. She was asleep by the time he got there slowly he picked her up and carried her o her bunk. He left to see Pain standing outside.

"What were you doing in there"

"She fell asleep in the cargo bay I was bringing her to her room."

"Oh"

"You shook her up"

"Excuse me"

"Her feelings are jumbled she doesn't know what to do what to think she's just confused"

"And you know this how"

"Same way I know Melanie has a twin or had"

"How did you.."

"Good Night Pain" As he turned and walked away John hesitated fro just a moment.

"She also has a daughter"

"Don't you mean had"

"No" John turned and walked away.

Ertia woke to quiet darkness. Fumbling, she reached beside her, disoriented when her hand didn't meet warm skin.

"Pain?" She pushed herself up on the bunk and looked around. She was alone, in her old room in the passenger quarters. Oh yeah, 13 was gone. She had her room back.

How had she gotten here?

The events of the previous day came back in fits and starts, the blurred re-play camera of her sleepy mind searching out the parts that that mattered most. A woman ready to kill Pain, and then herself leaping to defend him, ready to kill on his behalf. Then the knowing why... the listening as Pain confessed he'd seduced her, loved her, betrayed her.

Ertia couldn't blame that woman now. She knew that sting, that hurt, that rage.

Still, people change. Hadn't she changed? 'Prison forced you to change.' the voice whispered.

She stood up and reached for her shoes, before remembering that she didn't have any. Barefoot, she stepped out into the corridor, relishing the nighttime quiet. Shipscat wound by under her feet and she picked the little animal up, scooping her up to ride on her shoulder as she made her way to the galley.

*Pain couldn't sleep. He tried but all he could think of was Ertia, her touch, the way she smelled, that thing she did with her tongue . Pain got up, swearing as he stubbed his toe. He turned on the lights, put on some pants, and decided to go to the galley. Pain climbed out of his bunk and walked into the galley. He noticed Ertia was there, her back facing him. He stood there for a minute, taking in her figure. Pain let out a breath and said*

Ertia I want to make it up to you. I know you said you needed some time to think things through, but right now I need you more than anything. I know it's only been a few hours since I told you my story, but I miss the feel of your body next to mine, the way you smell, your touch, that thing you do with your tongue. I just want you to know that I'll do anythin' to get you to trust me again.

*Pain stood there in the galley, waiting for Ertia's answer.*

Pain's voice sounded softly behind her, surrounding her like a warm blanket. She didn't turn around, just stood there, staring at the table top, all of her senses quivering as she listened.

I want to make it up to you. I know you said you needed some time to think things through, but right now I need you more than anything.

'I need you, too,' her heart cried, 'but I don't know if I'm strong enough.' She didn't speak yet, she couldn't trust her voice not to betray her.

I know it's only been a few hours since I told you my story, but I miss the feel of your body next to mine,

I miss you,too.

the way you smell, your touch, that thing you do with your tongue.

A smirk spread across her face before she could stop it.

I just want you to know that I'll do anythin' to get you to trust me again.

The smirk fell away. Slowly, she turned around, still unable to meet his gaze. Wordless, she stepped towards him, into his arms, pressing her face to his chest, inhaling his familiar scent.

Something in her heart calmed and she finally was able to speak, "Just be patient with me, babe, please. I ... want to believe. I do. I just... it's gonna take time. That's all."

*Pain rested his chin on the top of Ertia's head. He breathed in the smell of her hair, sighed and said*

I know it'll take time babe and I'll try my best to be patient. It's just I don't know what'd I do if'n I lost you. It's been four long years since I've shared my bed with someone I loved. I don't want to lose that because of somethin' stupid I did.
