Banner grinned "Now boy don't ya go sayin' that 'bout yerself."

Darren raised an eyebrow and replied "I ain't the one I was referin' to."

Meanwhile in Shati's bunk

Shanti picked up Jeddy and plopped down in her bed, hugging Jeddy close to her chest. She said to Jeddy "Why does Darren have to act like a complete a$$ when Banner's around?"

She held up the bear and stared into its expressionless eyes. She thought to herself "I've known men like Darren and yet Darren is different. It's probabably because he's never tried to take sexual advantage of me. Or maybe it's the fact that he's always nice to me. What do you think Jeddy?"

Jeddy stared back at Shanti saying nothing. Shanti sighed and laid down on her bed. She said to Jeddy as she turned off the light and ignored the hunger in her stomach "You're right Jeddy I'll never understand that Darren. Banner on the other hand well he's just an uncaring old fart who could stand to loosen up."

Shanti let out a sigh and let sleep overcome her.

"Gettin' late," Darren remarks, checking his shiiiiny watch.

"Although there ain't really night and day out in the black. Just...black," Banner muses, sipping from his flask.

"That'd make it night," the shy Mononoke puts in.

"Guess it t'would, now wouldn't it?" He studies Darren thoughtfully. "Ya know, was a good thing ya did that earlier, ya know. With the wrench?"

"Care ta explain that?" Darren says with a wry smile, fondly remembering bashing the cockney bastard's head.

"Didn't 'ave much respect for ya, before that little outburst. But any man who's got the wrinklies to try'n hit me deserves some respect. Even if they hit from behind."

Well, off to sleep, bud, so feel free to continue the banter.

She glanced over at Banner, who seemed calmer than before, and then back at Darren, who was still glaring at the gunman from time to time. Good thing Gail seemed to have finished off every bottle of rice-wine on the ship and seemed in no condition to start a fight for himself.

Shanti grinned at Mononoke. This ship sure needed more women!

Then she hesitated, brow wrinkled in thought, "Of course, that also means we're seperated if something goes wrong. More chance of one of us getting caught or the others forced to leave them behind."

Shanti lowered her head in Banner's direction, "Thank you for your offer, sir. I think I can manage."

As she slices protien and mixes it with seasoning, the discussion on the job continues.

"How big a take we looking at?" Gail asks, 100% practical.

"Enough we can take a break, maybe take some time planet-side." The captain answers, "Have ourselves a vacation."

"If'n we can find a planet where nobody wants to kill us, that is?" Banner tossed out, and Gail saluted him.

Shanti thought about her words for a long moment before she actually spoke them aloud, "This is almost like a vacation, well, without the intruders and the doping and the shooting, I mean. I keep waiting for it to all end."

The others seem to hear what she doesn't say; that she expects to return to slavery, that being on the ship is like facing a desert mirage, never sure if it's water or just an empty promise.

Shanti heaped food onto a platter and dropped it into the middle of the table before stacking plates and silverware nearby.

She was still feeling the affects of the drugs, and her body was protesting the lack of nutrients in her system. It was all she could do to drop into a seat beside Puro and scoop some protien hash onto her plate.

"Jewel's are all well and pretty, Captain. But the real question is are they marked? And do we have a buyer?" She doesn't say, 'because if you shot Badger we can't look to him for any favors', but she thinks it. Men and their tempers would likely get them all killed.

Mononoke wrinkles her nose as she thinks, "Even if the jewels are laser-marked, I can probably hack the registry and re-register their numbers to our buyer. That is, if we have a buyer."

Uh, guys? Some help with plot progression would be good here. help!

"Who is this lady Captain Foalin?" Shanti said a little hesitant.

Faolin replied "I only know her by her nickname of Mistress. She's one tough lady who won't think twice about killing folk. We uh kind of have some history between us, none of which that I'd like to discuss at the moment."
