So I'm looking at buying myself a copy of Serenity (don't worry, I've already seen it many times, and I do own the series, I just haven't gotten around to picking up a copy of the movie yet).

I'm looking on Amazon, and I see they have three editions: Fullscreen, Widescreen, and HD. I'm not too familiar with HD technology. If I get the HD version, will it work on a regular DVD player and TV, or on a computer? Or do I need an HDTV to view it?

Thanks!

No on all counts. It will not work in a DVD player, it will only work in an HD DVD player. FYI, there are two competing high definition formats (think VHS and Betamax), one is HD DVD, the other is Blu Ray.

An HD DVD will not play on a computer either, unless you have an HD DVD, but I don't think Toshiba has started puttin' them in PC's yet. The Xbox 360 is supposed to eventually have an HD DVD drive upgrade, but no date on that yet.

Last, you do not need an HDTV to view an HD DVD on an HD DVD player, as the player will downconvert from the native high resolution to the 480 lines of standard TV's. Obviously an HDTV would be preferable though, when paired with a high def player, be it HD DVD or Blu Ray.

Hope that info helps. I'm guessing the Widescreen version is your best bet (don't get me started on fullscreen if it's not the original aspect ratio).

Thanks! That's just what I needed. And yes, of course I'll get the widescreen version. Even putting aside the issue of what was the original aspect ratio, my computer is a widescreen laptop, so widescreen movies look great on it.

If you don't have a HDTV, there's no point in getting the HD-DVD version (unless you plan on getting a HDTV in the near future). Indeed, there is no point getting a HD-DVD or BluRay player unless you have a HDTV.

...unless it worked on a computer, because computer monitors often meet or exceed HD resolutions. That was what I was interested in, but I don't have an HD DVD drive, so it won't work for me.

It's true computer monitors match or exceed the resolution but they're not really the same as TVs. There's a whole other set of technologies behind a HDTV - you can watch a HDDVD on a PC/monitor but it won't necessarily look as good as it should.

I'm just glad both high def players are backwards compatible with DVD, because if my collection would have been obsolete in a few years, I would have abandoned civilization and just gone out to live in the mountains of Wyoming or something.

I'm just glad I wasn't old enough to spend the money I have on DVD's on Laserdiscs...I would have been screwed. Well I take that back, I'd at least have the original untouched SW trilogy and The Killer on LD. But other than that...

so which one will win out? anybody have a clue?.... i'm waiting for the PS3 which i think (not sure), is blu-ray..... but this whole soap opra 'when technology colides' makes me mad - one will be dominate and the market will gear itself towards that technology... but what about the people who bought the other (lazer-disc) machines...? Looks like the Blu-ray will be more expensive.... and that will probably be the winner.... arrrrggg

Yes, the PS3 is going to be Blu Ray, which is one of the reasons they wouldn't pin down a US release date because Sony couldn't get the Blu Ray specs down.

Personally, I think both camps will eventually release the specs to manufacturers who will make combo players (apparently the legalities have also been discussed). This will basically mean there won't be a winner and a loser, just two formats, both of which will play on a swiss-army-player.

I think there's only one or two studios releasing films in BOTH formats, so for most cases, a collection will just be a mixture of HD DVD and Blu Ray discs, depending on which movies you buy. That makes sense, since it SHOULD be about enjoying films, not a technology fire fight.

As someone that has a quite extensive collection of Betamax tapes in my basement, I'm gonna wait a few years before I upgrade.

I think Stephen Colbert pinned it down pretty well when he said, "All you need to know? The winner will be the one you don't buy."
