Going to give Firefly DVDs to kids in my family. Kids are from 8 to 13 years old. Are they too young?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

13 I would say not really. If you've been to Junior High/Middle School, you know most of these things. Maybe a couple more years, though, for the torture. Remember the torture? 8 is probably too young. Might want to talk to parents about it either way.

I agree- maybe the 13-year old, depending on how mature he/she is. But in general, I think they'd still be too young to appreciate or understand the series, and you'd run the risk of ruining it for them.

I'd say Thirteen and up. It is really shocking that some people let there 5 year olds watch it. I love the verse but my kids can wait just a bit longer before the get enamored with it all!

Depends on the kid. I got hold of a copy of 'I, Claudius' at the age of seven. Wacky Roman fun !
My father was little freaked at having to explain disembowelling, though.

Considering the rubbish pumped out in the way of video games and tv ads, I think a well-written and well-paced series, that indicates that life might not always give you what you want, is a good thing.

I have 2 boys. They have pretty much watched what I watched since they were very small. They are smart, engaging young men.

If you feel your kids are old enough, then give it to them. Or ask their parents, parents know their kids.

Yeah, it depends on the child. Some folks were shocked when I took my then 4-year-old son to see Jurassic Park in the theater because they thought it would be too scary for him, but he knew full well the difference between fantasy and reality (and he really liked dinosaurs), so it was no big deal for him.

It's probably best if you let the parents decide, though, since they should know, much better than anyone else could, if the child is ready for it.

Ask the parents and make sure you're available to answer questions. With the 8 year old you might just want to show certain snippets instead of the whole episode:)

INDIGOSTARBLASTER

I remember in junior high we read "young adult novels" in school about slavery in the Old South. There was also one about children left to fend for themselves in Poland during WWII (father taken to a concentration camp, mother already fled to Switzerland). My brother and I were also reading science fiction and fantasy novels on our own around that age (Lord of the Rings, Piers Anthony (lots of sex and nudity in those books, even if it isn't particularly graphic), Star Trek novelizations). And we had watched tons and tons of Hong Kong martial arts TV series on tape.

All of which is to say, depending on how the kids are being raised, the 13-year-old has probably already been exposed to more fictional sex and violence than Firefly contains, and probably with less moral and literary merit, too. And maybe even the 8-year-old -- I understand the exposure to this kind of stuff happens earlier now than it did twenty years ago.

Anyway, I wouldn't write off Firefly for the kids based on age alone. My understanding is that the best way to handle this is to sit and watch with them. That way, you can explain anything puzzling that comes up and turn the TV off if it seems to be upsetting the kids.

I've got three kids, ages 11, 9 and 6. They all love Firefly and Serenity.

True, there are certain scenes when the 6 year old covers his eyes (Reaver scenes, mostly) and my 9 year old daughter keeps asking questions about why Inara still sees other people when it's clear to her that she's really in love with Mal (yes, my 9 year old can even tell that!), but other than that they are fine with everything in the show and movie.

Kids are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for, or maybe mine are just geniuses, but in any case I'm the one who decides what is appropriate for them to watch, and in my opinion Firefly and Serenity have so many positive qualities to impart that they totally outweigh the very few negatives that the kids might pick up.

Besides, the show is very educational. They are all learning to swear in Mandarin.

Just my $0.02.

As a teacher I have to say...Thanks for teaching them to swear in mandarin. That's one less thing for me to have to write tickets for or yell at the kids about. I can easily claim I had no idea they were swearing....hmmmm I think I may start doing that at school. Then the kids could swear and we wouldn't have to waste a surprisingly large amount of time pretending we care and making them stop:)

Parents should watch first --
all of it -- so they know what's
coming, then decide which is too
far ahead of which kid. They'll
be better prepared by that than by
getting someone else's description.

And it needs to be discussed
afterward. The crew aren't all the
best role models.

Lots of times we have to discuss
things with our kids without any
preparation. Why toss away a chance
to think it through?

JMHO, of course.

It's definately depending on their level of maturity. I already understood most things by the time I was 12 and I'm 16 now. We definately know more than we let on.

But it's always good to check with the parents first. Every set is different. My mom watched Dead Like Me with me back wehn it was on and I know that if I had a different mom, I probably would have been forbidden from watching it.

Honestly I think it is OK for kids to watch. Although I don't know if any one less than 16 would be able to really appreciate it for what Firefly is. Atleast for me I love the series cuz of all the meaning in it. I think most people under age 16 probably don't have that open of a mind or are able to understand the meaning behind say the ship Serenity's name and so on. Hell not even full grown adults, like my dad can understand it. Seems like Firefly attracts more female viewers than male lol.

Anyways children 8-12 I highly doubt would be able to enjoy it for what it is.

My five year old watches Firefly and has seen Serenity. But he hasn't seen all the episodes of Firefly yet. War Stories is one I don't let him see yet, but maybe in another year or so.

We've always discussed with him about the difference between fantasy and reality, and that much of what's on TV is pretend. (Even the news sometimes!)

And I'll agree with just about everyone here, it depends on the child and how you speak to your children. If you engage them in their TV watching and discuss it with them, then yes, Firefly should be fine. There are some interesting themes that will bring up some enlightening discussions: how a government can gain too much control, legalization of prostitution, justifying violence, breaking the law and remaining moral...

Fun and wacky times. :)

Same here. I've had a lot of discussions with the kids about governments abusing power, but I try to stay away from the prostitution angle. Hell, my WIFE wants to become a Registered Companion - I don't need my daughters growing up with that as their main goal too!

I'd say, no.

I'm in my 40's, and there's things in it which make me uncomfortable. I'd not allow any children watch my copy of it.

I did watch the DVD with my nephew (he was 16 at the time), but I'd not let my 10 year old niece watch it.

There are two issues here.

The one we have addressed in the
main is the question of who's old
enough to watch Firefly.

The other one was the question of
whether or not you buy it *for
someone else's kids.*

I maintain that the kids' parents
need to have some say in the matter.
They might not consider such a gift
as appropriate for all the kids.

My son is 8. We let him watch all the eps with the exception of War Stories and Heart of Gold. It really depends on the kids--is your 8 year old OK with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, or does he/she hide under the bed shaking at the mention of ring wraiths? I think the older kids can handle it, and I know my son enjoyed the action in it but didn't get a lot of the subtleties he will discover when he is older.

Thank you for all the responses. All the kids have seen Star Wars, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, which have a bit of violence in them but not much sex. I figure they get enough of the sex stuff from TV.

I'll give the DVDs to the parents and tell them it was a broadcast tv show shown on Friday nights during prime time. I know one pair will probably watch the whole thing before giving it to the kid. The other pair probably won't.

I'm 15, the only reason I would say not to watch it if you're young is that I sort of felt awkward watching Heart of Gold with my parents in the room. Besides that, i would say to show Firefly to children young (meaning all the other episodes), it needs to carry into the next generation. War Stories is torture, but I mean there's not even blood, okay I've seen Saw, Saw 2, Cabin Fever, and all the other gorey movies you can think of, but I mean it's really not THAT bad. A few of my friends have birthdays coming up and you know what they're getting? (Ok, I'm cheap so I can't afford to buy them the whole season...but I'll get them the movie, hopefully that'll do it) I think it's honestly more important that the dvds are being bought, and it is not the giver's responsibility to mandate what the receiver watches. It's not like some of these awful shows like "The OC" or "One Tree Hill" they're so sex-oriented that I can't stand to watch them. And these are shows on TV now!

Ah yes, the OC. I work with very stupid people in general, and there's a TV here and I get subjected to all kinds of crap when I first get here. (American Idol, OC, anything that caters to low denomiators, it tends to be on until I turn it off). Correct me if I'm wrong, but did I or did I not at one point see an actual rape scene on the OC? It was fully clothed people, but there was this girl whimpering and stuggling and crying and this guy was pinning her down and like, biting her and talking to her (sound was off) with this really ugly look on his face. I would say that beats about anything else in terms of "things I really don't want to see on the screen".
Sorry, got off track. Doubt anyone here knows the answer anyway.

It's honestly quite probable, the stuff sickens me. Of course I watch Lexx too, which probably makes me a hypocrite, but Lexx was on late at night and didn't really advertise to children. All I hear at school though is girls going on about these other shows, and I think it's a real indicator of how rotten society becomes when Firefly is not on tv Possibly the only thing the OC has going for it is that the actress that played Nandi is in it, but I won't watch it not even for that. Thank God my parents don;t like it so I don't have to watch it at home.

And unfortunately for her has the bad luck of not being able to have another hot makeout scene with Nathan. I guess she was beautified so that Mal would not out-shine her, what am I saying, he did anyway. But she definitly is very pretty, I wish I has those eyes.

Let's not forget that Objects In Space has one of the most terrifying (almost-)rape scenes ever filmed, and the actors never even touch one another.

The power of Firefly is not that so much is shown explicitly, but that you care about the characters so deeply that even implied violence becomes extremely intense.

I suppose that's something that needs to be taken into account. The more empathy the child is capable of, the more deeply he or she is likely to be affected. In that sense, older kids may actually be impacted more powerfully than younger ones.

A friend of mine took her daughter, she was about 4, the daughter not my friend, to see the very first Harry Potter. No problem. The girl loved it. The next Harry Potter she was scared to death. Go figure. Maybe she was to young the first time to understand what was happening. Who knows? Maybe the 8 year old can handle it better than the 13 year old can. As the people above me pointed out let the parents decide. Even if they don't completely understand what is happening, as they get older they figure it out. From what I see on TV these days they have probably seen more violence and sex than ever Firefly showed.

Well I'll definitly go for anyone 14+, my most successful convert, love her dearly, was 14 at the time and I wasnt around when she watched it ever, and yet a few days later she came to me bouncing up n down saying how much she loved it. And when I say successful convert, just mean she got her family into it, they bought their own set, saw the movie n all, plus her email is now roughly FireflyRocks... so that's 14.

When I watched it, good gosh that was coming on 4 years ago... I was about her age, and I dont think i got it all, but then, was run out of order w/o the pilot back then. So, 14+ is my vote.

I'd say you dont want to show them too early simply because imo it is more fulfilling to watch something the first time and understand the whole thing, rather than saying, when they learn the concepts of gov corruption or prostitution they'll think "just like firefly!"... imo the other way round is better.

Saw a clip show of TV's more controversial moments on file cabinet. While it doesn't show the Superbowl wardrobe malfunction, it is pretty racy.

In fact, I was going to post a link but it is pretty bad. No, it is really bad. If they show this crap, then Firefly is walk in the park.

Comparing Firefly to the worst of TV is probably not fair but it does show what kids are exposed to today. I'll still give it to the parents w/ a warning. I'll also tell the kids so they can put the screws to the parents.

I, too, have let my almost 5 year old charge and my 10 & 6 y-o nieces watch Shindig. The 10 year old is the only one who stayed tuned to the end... the others were very interested in various aspects at the beginning (all 3 are girls - so pretty, pretty party scene!) but got engrossed in something else before the sword play. My little charge (I'm her nanny) has 2 brothers who watch some really graphic stuff (Spiderman 1 & 2/Dr Who/Harry Potter 4) and she pretty much has seen it all - though I wouldn't let her watch any other episode than Shindig! Having said that I wouldn't have let the boys watch any of the above myself - that was their parents choice (they're 6 & 8) and although he's fine with all of the above, the 6 year old freaks when Shrek belches at the villagers in the first film!! - go figure!

I think it should only be shown to kids over the age of 14 but 8 is way to young. But I think it all depends on the kid,a lot of kids nowadays have watched R rated movies and played Matured rated games before the age of 13,so their not going to say what's Inara doing in the bed with the other man or be scared by a few violent scenes.I'm letting my brother(13 years old) watch it now because I know he understands the content or I at least I think he does. But we're talking about the content in Firefly but does the child actually undersatnd Firefly and appreciate it and unfortunatly in this pop cultured world we live in most kids won't appreciate Firefly for what it truly is.

I would say the 13 year old will be fine, but eight is probably a little too young. A lot of the jokes will fly over their heads, but some situations you might be a little uncomfortable explaining to them.

I watched it when it originally aired when I was 11. I enjoyed it, and understood it, although War Stories stood out. (Not necessarily in a bad way, just memorable to a 11 year old. lol)

So I'd say, that it does depend on the kid, but there really isn't anything on Firefly that kids aren't seeing all the time in television.

That having been said, I have a 15 year old friend whose mother won't let her see it. But her mom is one of those parents who tries to completely control and shelter their kids from everything, and they often can't watch shows, or drink caffeine, or chew gum, or use the internet, or several other random things. lol So you should probably check with the parent first.

Some people have listed several episodes in particular, War Stories has torture, but definitely not as bad as say Alias (which that friend is allowed to watch...imagine that...) or many other shows people are seeing. Heart of Gold deals with prostitution/sex but it's not like seeing a Strip Club in Las Vegas or other shows, or even as bad as many sex scenes on tv these days. And one bonus is that alot of the cursing is in Chinese, so no worries there. The rape scene in Objects in Space is intense, but not one of the most disturbing ever filmed (A Clockwork Orange anyone?), plus nothing ends up happening. And I doubt an 8 year old would even fully grasp what going on.

ETA: Although, my favorite movie growing up was Short Circuit instead of Bambi or some other disney movie, and I watched Monty Python when I was 5 or 6, so maybe I'm not the best example. But I think I turned out okay.

Depends on their maturaty I would say...I'm 14 but I'm maturer and understand more than quite alot of 16 years olds and am able to understand alot of stuff that when watching FireFly with my older brother (17) he couldnt quite understand it (yes he's stupid) but I would talk to the parents about if they think their kids are mature enough to watch it.
