GRASSROOTS! Let's try again to get Firefly: Season 2 started!

Okay people, I have a lot of experience e-mailing senators and representatives on health issues, so let me go over a few rules of e-mailing executives for maximum effect.

1) Do not insult an executive's intelligence. We may think they're nuts for not producing Firefly: Season 2, but they certainly don't think they're nuts. And they value their so-called "intelligence". Asking a question can be productive, as long as the question itself is not insulting.

2) Persistence pays off.

3) Courtesy pays off.

4) Sound arguments have the best effect. In show business, the biggest issue is $$$$$, so we have to show the executives how much money they could make if Firefly was in their lineup, and how much they are missing by not having it there. Example: I don't watch the SciFi channel. I just don't have the time between business, a wife and year-old child. But I'd sure be watching it if Firefly was in their lineup!

5) Persistence pays off! If you decide to join with me in this effort, commit to send an e-mail every so many days. BUT DO NOT send MORE than ONE e-mail PER DAY! There can be too much of a good thing, and the last thing you want to happen to your message is to have it ignored because you e-mailed the channel 5 times a day!

6) Be reasonable and sane in your e-mail. Utilize real statistics and personal feelings (as long as they are positive about the show and NOT NEGATIVE about the company/channel)! Avoid invoking terms specific to Firefly/Serenity, as these execs probably have never watched the show (otherwise, they'd know how great it is!).

7) If possible, call your targetted person/company to express your desire for whatever you want, and the fact that there are more supporters than just you. I could not find a phone number for the SciFi channel, but if someone knows a customer service or feedback line, post the telephone number HERE. If we DO end up with a phone number, the same rules above apply; I will post a similar thread with additional on-phone caveats if that happens.

On SciFi's FAQ, they have the following answer to a question:

Why doesn't SCI FI have... [insert popular show]?
Some common reasons might be:

* The show has been licensed by another cable network, is in a syndication window and airing on local stations nationwide, or is simply not available for licensing at the moment.
* Some cable networks may own the current license term for your favorite show even though they are not airing it.

If we find out that either of those cases are the fact for Firefly, we will switch our focus to the "guilty" party that is withholding our beloved show from us.

Here is an example letter. I sent this one earlier today. Feel free to edit and add things to personalize the letter, but FOLLOW THE RULES ABOVE!

Subject: grasping at long shots

Body:
Why are you guys messing around and grasping at all these long-shot ideas for shows? You already have a ready-made show you guys could turn into a mega-hit if you guys would just pursue it!

Firefly still has a cult following and was really popular despite Fox’s efforts to kill it (which it did). Serenity grossed over $25 million for a movie with no major stars and very little promotion (not counting rental and DVD sales).

You could re-air the first season, in order, while working on the second season. The second season could fill the holes between the first season and the movie (explaining why and how Shepherd Book and Inara were no longer with the ship and developing the elimination of the “2-by-2, hands of blue” guys, necessitating the involvement of an Operative). A third season could pick up after the movie and pursue storylines spinning off of the movie.

It’s so beautifully laid in your lap. And the storylines and deep characters in the show would give you significant plot lines to work with for several seasons. The show won an Emmy in 2003 and was nominated for a variety of others ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/awards )… what other show do you have that has done that?

Consider what you already have. Firefly is a gem in hiding, a diamond in the rough.

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I am writing to express my support for the television show Firefly. Firefly still has a strong cult following nearly four years after it was pulled from the air by Fox. The movie based upon the show netted $25 million in a short period despite having no major stars and limited promotion. That number does not include DVD sales and rental revenue.

There is good potential for Firefly to be a hit for your network. There is a time period between the end of season 1 and the movie that could be utilized in a new season. And then there is the fallout in that universe after the events of the movie.

I urge you to consider and reconsider using Firefly as one of your channel’s main series. It would be an excellent audience draw, and reviving it would give your channel a critically acclaimed draw, as Firefly was nominated for a number of awards ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/awards ) and would continue to draw award interest in a new season.
