Heya Seryn!

Actually, other than cheeseburgers, separating meat and dairy has been one of the easiest parts of it for me. I eat maybe one serving of meat a day, if that, so it's just an issue of being aware of what's dairy and what's pareve (neutral) when I am having meat. I've never had any vegetarian leanings, I've just never been that big of a meat eater. And some of the medications I'm on have a tendency to make me nauseous, and meat just makes the situation worse.

By far the hardest issue for me has been giving up pork and shellfish, particularly in their incarnations as bacon and sushi. I don't buy them and cook them in my home, but I'm a little less strict when I go out to eat. I'm working on bacon, and hopefully I'll be over it before I go stay at my parents' house next (my mother has a gigantic cast iron griddle that covers two burners on the stove, and when we're all home, she just loads that up with bacon and pancakes and french toast). Shellfish in sushi will take much, much longer to give up, heh.

Yeah? Where are you, goat?

I like much sushi! My favorites are Unagi, Maguro, salmon, shrimp, and crab. I like just about anything except the sugared egg, the raw egg, the squid, and anything with excessive ammounts of roe because I don't like the texture of roe at all. I'll try just about anything once! Also, I don't like too much wasabi on my sushi because it's a bit difficult to taste anything else under that stuff. I prefer to avoid it but certain places build it right into the sashimi rolls. I've had unagi spoiled that way; I was not happy.
*edit* I totally missed that Seryn had posted! Bad Rose! Hey girl, how ya doin? Can I ask what this best friend did to piss you off? I had a falling-out with a former best friend last year; it was NOT pretty. And I don't think I would ever talk to her again, much as I sometimes miss her. I miss who she was; don't really know who she is anymore.

I'm in Osaka, Japan for now but I'll be back in Wisconsin next summer. Still pretty far, though.

You listed some good ones there. They do tend to be sneaky about the wasabi some times. I put extra on top several times before figuring that out. My favorites are california roll (even though its not traditional sushi), spider roll (deep fried crab and some other stuff) and maguro(tuna, I think). I could go on and on, though. Sushi was pretty much the only thing that kept me from going all out vegetarian.

One interesting thing that I've learned here is that what US sushi places call sashimi isn't really sashimi here. A sushi roll is what is commonly thought of as sushi, sushi is something put over some sushi rice and sashimi is just raw fish.

I love spider rolls! (One of my favorite ways to eat crab) though California rolls can be about anything. But I like rolls. And yes, maguro is tuna. Yum yum!
Yeah, I've been to places that had plain raw fish for sashimi, but many of them put them on rice and wrap them with seaweed (hence "sashimi roll". Didn't know how else to refer to it) and of course Unagi is also generally served that way.
Oh man, I want sushi...

PR, heh, yeah, that's hubby's take on it too. But he's strangely supportive of me keeping kosher. One time he threw out my coffee mix when I realized it wasn't kosher, and was trying to decide whether or not to throw it out. Just picked it up and threw it out, then took me grocery shopping. Probably sounds incredibly boring, but I found it really sweet, hehe.

Anyhow, it certainly isn't something anyone else expects me to be doing, and no one is checking up on me when I mess up. Mostly I do it because I like taking the extra minute in the store to see if the thing is kosher before I buy it, I like that I had to make that decision about including the hot dogs with my biscuits tonight. I dunno, it's hard to explain, but I like being reminded about my religious choices in small moments like that.

I will admit that I am a sushi weakling, heh. My favorites depend on the place, but they're generally pretty tame. At the place hubby and I go to now, we get the crazy roll (which is a California roll tempura fried) and the Philadelphia roll, most times. Both are soooooo yummy, but not exact adventurous, hehe.

You should try Unagi, CK. It's like my dessert sushi because it is just so good. Not shellfish!

Never heard of a Philadelphia roll, but most places have different names for different things.

Sounds interesting; never had cream cheese in my sushi. The local place here has a "catapillar roll" which is little bits of eel (unagi) rolled in rice and topped with avacado and sesame seeds. It is very yum.

My best friend has a Japanese aunt who taught her how to make sushi, so she can make sushi. But she hasn't been able to afford to make any in recent past, so I haven't gotten the pleasure of homemade sushi.
Cook it myself? I do ok with eggs, spaghetti, and burgers, but I wouldn't really trust myself with anything more complicated. Especially not something with expensive ingredients.
Best friend is a kitchen witch; her cooking is literally magick. She can do anything.
I burn things a lot. Lots of fire in my blood and my magick. Hence the name and the picture.
That was a little disjointed. Sure you got the idea, though.

Fresh water eel, to be exact. It really is delicious; I can't recommend it enough. I was a little scared of it at first, too. Now I can't get enough. Ever.
Just don't have it with wasabi; there's a wonderful terriaki-like, sweet sauce that's supposed to go with it. It really makes it.
It isn't raw, if that's what you're worried about. They cook it and usually serve it warm.

Good question. Start with a mix would be my advice. California rolls, spider rolls, unagi, salmon, and maguro are all very good and mostly non-threatening (i.e. cooked! lol)
My dad started me on maguro without telling me what it was. I think I was about six at the time

loved sushi ever since. I remember the restaurant owner was most shocked to see this little white girl gobbling up sushi. She even came over to talk to us.

Hmmm...with the flambe thing going on, maybe you should try teppanyaki instead.

I've found a place that sells the whole lot of stuff, and it's not that expensive. It's using the right rice, and that's pence.

Don't like california rolls myself - the mayo bothers me.

NO! Shrimp sushi is probably the one kind that doesn't need anything on it! It's so good! And the flavor is very delicate and easily overwhelmed.

OddsBodkins: I suggest the tamago sushi (the one PR complains about -- the Japanese scrambled egg/omlette sushi). It's too sweet for my tastes, but very safe. That or inari or "cone" sushis...

That or maki (a.k.a. roll sushi)...

Both of the sushis in the pictures have no raw fish in them.

Goat: I thought all california rolls have mayo inside (the surimi or fake crab meat is usually mixed with some mayo)?

Hello Gorgeous people!

I've been off the radar for almost 48 hours and was having withdrawral symptoms and tonight I come in and find you're talking about one of my favourite subjects ... sushi!!

Yum, yum, yum!!! I love all kinds - but not fussed by the cooked fish varieties - even the 'shrimp' (we call them prowns here!) I usually find it's a bit overcooked for me and one of the things I loved about sushi when I discovered it was that it was not cooked! The delicacy of the flavour is not lost and I so prefer uncooked tuna to cooked!

California roll ...hmmmm.. I do like it! It usually has a smearing of Japanese mayo in it which is not tangy but very creamy and really finishes it off - but Goat is right - it's not a Japanese thing really! (as the name might suggest). I asked a favourite sushi chef once what California roll is in Japanese and he told me it's called California Roll... even in Japan! Apparently it was a kind of compromise to encourage a new market to taste sushi when the idea of raw fish was still a bit overwhelming to them! Has anyone tried the almost raw beef dish? (It's name will come to me...

) I also love the spicy 'dumplings' they make called gyoza, and the onigiri or potato pancakes... if I hadn't just finished dinner I'd be very hungry right now!

Got a marinade for beef that starts out a bit like teriyaki, shoyu and mirin and little grated ginger...

I always assumed it was a macho thing. The only man I've known who claimed to love spicy food and actually been able to eat it without turning red and tearing up is my brother. Anyone else seems to be saying "This is great!" through their tears; like they're trying to impress someone with how much they can take.

I don't know what half of those things are, but they sound wonderful! I'll try any food at least once, espcially if it is spicy. One of my biggest accomplishments in life was trying raw octopus, sishumi and lots of other New Food when on a trip to Japan (lotsof host stays). Wonderful!

PR - You may be misinterpreting! As odd as this sounds, it is totally possible to turn red, tears streaming, and be thoroughly enjoying the experience. That is what normally happens to me when I get a really spicy food. I love it! The red face and tears do NOT indicate that there is no enjoyment.

Seriously - they're not faking. It is just that the mental enjoyment of the taste is far more positive than the physical sensation causing the red face and tears (which in my opinion is positive too).

Well, maybe so. I can't stand it; I can't taste anything but the burning sensation and I feel like my head is going to explode. That's not really my idea of good flavor or a good time.
I've heard, though, that it's kind of a test of manhood in certain cultures and households. It might be a total urban legend, but I've heard that in Spanish culture, when a young lady brings a young man home for dinner, they spice up his food to see how much he can take. If he coughs or complains, he's not worthy.

ITA with Trogman...the rush that comes with eating really spicy food is fabulous, with or without tears and red face- although I usually order something that keeps me at the "flushed and happy" level and not the "crying and red as a stop sign" level :P

dancingneko: Keep in mind, pretty much all of the california rolls that I have had were in Wisconsin. Not exactly a place thats well known for its seafood. Heck, in Madison the lakes are so polluted from farm runoff that you're not supposed to eat the fish from them.

magdalena: I didn't catch the name when I tried it, but I did eat a dish that was mostly made of raw beef or mutton (loud restaurant, couldn't quite make the words out). It was raw meat mixed with a raw egg, some green onions and a couple of other things. I thought it was pretty good.

Other strange things that I have eaten recently: raw cow liver, cooked cow stomach, intestine and heart, fish liver (not sure if it was cooked or not), some sort of snail (i'll put a picture below) and whole fish (pretty small but you just pick it up and eat it; head, bones, fins, guts and all). The only thing I wasn't wild about was the snail and thats because I swear it was half liver and I don't particularly care for the texture of cooked liver.

You know, I do really like curry. Something about it that just doesn't burn the same way. It's yum. And garlic!
TrogMan, I agree. Living up to stereotypes is dumb. There are a few I happen to fit; mostly though, not so much.
