Is it just me, or does Inara dislike her job?

I don't think she is happy with it, but she's not unhappy either.

As far as I can see, it's what she chose to do, and is possibly all she knows, although as the series progresses, and her feelings for Mal get deeper, she does seem to get if not unhappy, at least disillusioned with her path.

I don't know if I would describe it as something that makes her happy or unhappy. Being a Companion appears to be something Inara finds fulfilling. It's obviously something she takes seriously, and there's a strong spiritual aspect to it, as well. Her interaction with her clients has never been just about sex. We see her providing comfort, guidance, whatever it is her clients need.

I think Inara takes pride in her work. She is a nurturing person by nature, and the caring aspect of her work probably comes very naturally to her. Having that title "Companion" is important to her, because it means a certain amount of status and education.

But pride and happiness are different things. I imagine that, at times, it can be an emotionally draining job. She always has to appear perfect and she has to be aware of her client's feelings and emotions above her own. And it requires sacrifices from Inara. She's insulted by people who don't understand her work (client in the pilot, Mal, Atherton), and it makes her feelings for Mal very complicated.

I've always had the impression that Inara was carrying unhappiness around inside of her, but I wouldn't say it's because of being a Companion. Most likely, it's a cause of whatever her big "secret" is.
