We were watching The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn, natch) last night and my son noted the similarity between Friar Tuck and Shepherd Book. Holy men who could fight who end up as the spiritual guide to a somewhat wayward flock...
Although, as he pointed out, no one questioned Friar Tuck's superior fighting skills.

There were other similarities, too.

Nice catch!

And both wayward flocks are stealing but we don't condemn them for it. Although, the BDHs don't exactly steal-from-rich-give-to-poor. Well, Jayne, by accident. Or Mal & Zoe, when they accidentally stole from the poor in the first place. Not as a rule, though.

Any other merry flocks with their own shepherds? Wasn't one of the Three Musketeers a man of the cloth?

And watching Ariel last night Wash refers to stealing from the rich and selling to the poor.

Yes. Aramis was training to be a priest, and was actually an assistant/aide to Richileu. He gave up the cloth when he saw the kind of corruption prevailent in the church.
