I'm not one of them, but some people I know absolutely will not watch Buffy because of Sarah Michelle Gellar. To this I say ??? I have tried to get them hooked on Buffy, to no avail. I don't know where the hate originates, but 2 of my friends are adament they will never watch Buffy because of SMG. I ask them what's wrong with SMG, and they tell me they don't, they just can't stand her.

Now I don't really think Jessica Alba is anything special, but I thought Dark Angel was pretty cool. I personally feel SMG could act circles around Jessica Alba, but my friends insist Dark Angel is better, even though they never watched Buffy.

If anyone can explain the strangeness of why people hate actors for no reason please let me know what causes it, and I will look for a cure.

Yeah, for along time I refused to watch buffy just because of smg, I dont know what it is about her but something about her annoys me. But after BDM came out and i broke my browncoat cherry I decided to give all things Whedon another try, I now don't hate buffy but its not on my top list either. I really enjoy watching the eps with dushku in em, but that is mostly cause i have a crush on her. SMG just gives me the willys and it does affect the show for me, I just have a hard time seeing through my annoyance of her.

I wish I could help you, but I don't have a clue.

I don't understand why some people hate a number of things (actors, real people, movies, books, etc.) for no apparent reason. If you're going to not like something, fine; but, can't you at least give some kind of reason?

I don't know what to tell you accept that it bugs me, too.

There are certain actors (Jim Carey, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler) who just are vastly annoying to me, who come across as abrasive and untalented and no matter what, thatis the only impression I have of what ever I've seen them in. I have tried to see them in different types of, in these cases, movies, but to no avail. I just can't stand 'em.

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that, to me, none of them can really act. (Carey is less of an actor than a cartoon carcature incognito. Very, very annoying.)

I don't think there's much you can do about it.

So... you won't watch eternal sunshine of the spotless mind then? It's a beautiful film. I don't like Carry much when he's being funny, but in Eternal Sunshine and the Truman Show, where he's trying to be dramatic, he'll pretty good.

But, yeah...

SMG. I have mixed feelings about her. I don't like her as much as other actrssess, but I LOVE Buffy(show and character). Maybe its because I saw Buffy from the beginning...

Hmm. Honestly, there are very few actors I dislike, but even then I am forced to admit they have good films/shows now and them. I hate Tom Cruise. I hated him way before it was populer, too. But he makes a great Lestat, no? And, to mention another recently unpopular actor, I have never cared for Mel Gibson. But Braveheart is good.

I knew lots of people who hated Kiera Knightly, then saw Pride and Prejudice, and now they love her. I wish more people could do that -- judge actors by the merit of their work instead of the publicized personality (if that makes sense).

I... really don't like SMG. But it's not just random and for no reason, I really don't think she can act. Everything I've seen her in (mostly a few episodes of Buffy I caught) she was always acting the same. Her style is shallow; she seems bad at showing emotion. She's always got kind of a blank look on her face and I totally totally cannot buy her as a badass. Her movements are jerky and would barely knock down a ten-year old in real life. The only episode of Buffy I ever watched all the way through actually didn't feature her that much, and the guest star was Clea DuVall (drool) so I watched it and enjoyed it alright. Don't think it was near the level of Firefly, though.

That was season one. It really wasn't that great season one. Really, if you ever decide to give buffy a try, just skip it. Start in season two... but not the first episode of season two, because it isn't that great. The third episode is good (intoduction of Spike, hell yeah...)

Well, at least you have a reason. You don't think she can act. Watching her act in "The Body", and numerous other Buffy episodes actually brought me to tears, and that just doesn't happen when I watch tv. Perhaps it's the subject matter,(mostly the pain of life when it comes to Buffy) but Alyson hannigan has also made me cry when I watch Buffy. But with Alyson Hannigan I practically break down if she so much as frowns. She just has that effect.

I have had the same "I won't watch Buffy becuase of SMG" many times. I have always told those people that everything she has done in the past has sucked (with the exception of Cruel Intentions) but Buffy was the role she was meant for as an actress. To truly see SMG acting range, you have to see Buffy all the way through.
Some I have found still won't watch, but there have been a couple that i have convinced to at least try it. One has now completely finished the series and really likes it, and the other is working on S3 and seems to be enjoying it.

I'm not really sure where the animosity towards SMG comes from but i have found that is the most common reason people give for not wanting to watch BtVS.

My, what a lovely metaphor, Monksdad...

I will admit to having irrational dislikes (irrational as in completely subjetive, immediate, and based on nothing but a feeling)...such as Jim Carey (though I didn't mind him so much in The Truman Show, and would watch him in other dramatic roles), Brendan Frasier, and Eugene Levy. And while their role in a movie or show I've heard wonderful things about won't stop me from seeing it, it may well diminish my enjoyment of it.

And to be honest, SMG does bother me a bit, though I know she didn't used to. With some people there's a certain trait that is interesting or endearing at first, but becomes irritating over time and continued exposure.

But keep in mind, Zoe couldn't stand Wash when she first met him, so...

Well, theres two ideas in this thread - hate the actor, hate the character. For instance, Wesley "Die.Die.Die." Crusher is a fine example of a character that rightfully should have been blown out the nearest airlock without a vacsuit. The guy that played 'im? Dont care one way or the other.
Pauly Shore. Fran Dresher. Roseann Barr. Explosive decompresion would be too kind.
They're just obnoxious, though. Sigourney Weaver is truely evil - because it was her screwing around and acting all like she's important that led to Hicks and Newt dying in the opening credits of Aliens III. There can be only two.

Buffy's a character I just didnt like on the small screen. The first couple of seasons she's always "Waaaaa. I dowanna be the Slayer! I wanna be a cheerleader again! I was happy as a cheerleader." then things got really awful; "Waaaaa. I dowanna be the Slayer! I wanna be dead again! I was happy dead!"
What an awful character. Faith - ok, first, she's way hotter than Geller - but the attitude was more along the lines of "Awsome. I got superpowers and a clear seperation between good and evil! Lets go Slay some Bads!"

And you've notice, as I have, theres no Wesley on Firefly. No character you're just saying 'Just shut the hell up and go off camera.'
They've all got their great moments, they've all got in-depth, well-defined personalities and they arent squeaky clean Federation know-alls.
"Theres a rift in the space-time continuum produced by this funny-foreheaded space alien (who, dispite being from the other side of the universe, still understands pressing lips together to be a sign of affection), what ever shall we do? Oh, I know, a cascading inverse tachyon quantum pulse should destablized the rift and save the universe as we know it. Again."

Right. You know, I was recently asked if I'd run a p-score for my risk analysis of wildfire in San Diego County. I had to google to remind myself what the hell a p-score was (it expresses risk in terms of standard deviation).

Joss's 'verse really is cooler than the other leading brands.

I'm one of those people that has never watched Buffy due to SMG...she is my number one most disliked actor/actress (with jennifer love hewitt coming in a close second). Aside from those two, there reallya aren't any actors I can think of that bother me. Now, in all fairness I have seen a work from each of them that didn't have me wanting to gouge my eyeballs out.

I'll give Buffy a try sometime...I just really dread having to see SMG.

My wife and I watched Buffy from day one, and we adored SMG at first. The character was cute, and SMG was cute as well. However, after Angel left the character of Buffy got to be more and more winey. I would say she became the B word, but I don't know if that would pass screening

At that same time SMG herself kept getting skinnier and hard looking. It made her seem like a Bitca as well. Add to that the fact that SMG seemed to never join in with cast affairs offset (i.e. Posting Board Parties, Video Game voice overs, etc.), and it just cemented the image.

I still think SMG is hard looking, not soft and cute like she was in the early seasons. Also, I thought she was a great actress in seasons 2 and 3. There were a lot of emotional scenes. I didn't see much of that in later seasons. I just think people test the waters with the wrong episodes.

There are a few actors I would rather not see onscreen, but usually the story or the other actors make up for it.
As to the SMG issue, I am also one of those individuals that do not like her at all. I honestly do not think highly of her as an actress, and yes, I have seen Buffy and a movie or two in which she acted. I will watch Buffy, but prefer the episodes where she is not the focus. I am not in any way a fan of Buffy, but most of the characters are quite entertaining.

Well, Dark Angel IS good, as good as Buffy IMHO, but Buffy had a longer time to tell it's tale. Jessica Alba is about equal to SMG in the acting corner (both started out questionable, then more than proved themselves, again, IMHO).

Dark Angel came easy for me, I instantly fell into the groove, and clicked with actors and characters. Buffy had to grow on me, and it wasn't until season 7 that I finally broke down and stopped saying Dark Angel was better!

It's all chemistry, what peeps like. Sometimes the chemistry can be a little altered with time and exposure...

I honestly used to say this about Buffy. I flat out refused to watch the show when it came on, and kept refusing for years after. While I admit I have started to like SMG more, my favorite characters are the supporting ones, people who I feel make the show worthwhile. So even if you really dislike an actor, don't forsake everyone on that show just because of one person.

Many people (myself included) think that SMG couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag. Plus Jessica Alba is far better looking, far better body, etc. IMO of course.

I also wouldn't say that they don't like her for no reason. I would say that they have a reason, but can't articulate it. I mean, I know that I've hated things before and my only answer was, "I just can't put my finger on it." It's as valide as anything else.

Being Buffy specific, I found that I was able to ignore the irritating Buffy character while watching the series on tv. But, the second time through (1st DVD run) I found her annoying, but the third time I watched the series, I couldn't stand her. The sheer lack of character develepment (still acting like the 16 year old from season 1 in season 7 was pathetic) really got to me.

Furthermore, I'm finding her cameo's on Angel (going through season 1 right now) like nails down a chalk board.

I know that the above is going to be sacrilegious to many people. But, one must understand that others hold differing opinions, and this is one of them. There isn't a cure, it's just about who likes what (there are no real hard facts that can be only interpreted one way involved).

ie:
"I like rap because it has a lot of base."
"I hate rap because it has a lot of base."

That being said, not watching something because there is an actor in it that one doesn't like isn't exactly the more wise, nor the most mature thing that one can do. But, what are ya gonna do?

Yeah, I have a friend who refused to watch Buffy because of SMG. But I was like, okay, if you don't watch this then I can't call you one of my friends. lol. But I eventually convinced her to watch it, and now she loves it. (Although she still hates SMG). The same friend refuses to watch Dark Angel because of Jessica Alba. Personally, I admire Jessica Alba. She has somehow managed to become a houseold name and a really famous actress, without having any roles that were very good. (Dark Angel asid in my opinion). I don't know how she did it, but she did. And from what I've read about her she seems like someone that I could actually get along with in real life.

It's like that saying, don't hate the player, hate the game. The movie (And television) business is risky. Sometimes people do what they have to do get a job, and taboids twist so much anyway, that there is no way to know what they are really like.

Personally, I don't really like SMG but there are so many actresses and actors that I love in Buffy that I can overlook her performance. But I think it also depends on how easily you can suspend your disbelief.

Alba's a fine looking woman, but Dark Angel just never clicked with me. If you're gonna do cyberpunk, do cyberpunk, chrome and attitude and big explosions, or flying cars and gloom, like Bladerunner. I think one of the reasons I like Firefly so much is that the crew reminds me of Shadowrunners - not the way the game Shadowrun (RPG cyberpunk with elves and dragons set in Seattle) portrays them, but the way they end up getting played.

Personally, I was only talking about SMG's abilities as an actor. But, as long as it's brought up, I have seen SMG in interviews, etc and quite frankly, I find her an idiot. Almost no redeming qualities.

I do agree though that people sometimes do have to compromise and do things they'd rather not to survive. But, that's no excuse for calling someone down in an interview for no reason which SMG did to Joss.

I think it speaks volumns when I can watch eps of Buffy and get emersed in it all (including vampires, daemons, etc), but SMG's "acting" brings me almost or fully out of the fantasy a lot of the time. I don't think I'm alone either.

Well, I first didnt watch buffy cause it just plain sounded weird, and all the ads for it were over the top and annoying (think fox and firefly) so I never tried. Then a few months back i netflixed the series at the recomendation of a buffy and firefly fan i know, and i cant say i regret it.

For all that i claim to be an amateur at least on the subject of acting, i usually cant pick out bad actors (or, if it is all subjective, i cant form opinions about em) so i just dont try. SMG, i've only ever seen her on buffy... wasnt impressed that she never showed her face on the extras. But buffy the character? Well, i found that she got less annoying and gained more depth as the series progressed (in season 1, joss was ultimately trying to write buffy as a stereotype... you know, plus the slayer thing) and the ensemble in buffy did an excellent job. SMG could not have carried the show by herself, but with the interesting other folk, it rounded itself out. And I cant fault SMG for eps like 'the body', of course.

as for the whiney thing... well, buffy the character was supposed to be as realistic as possible while maintaining the fiction, so the fact that years after the start of the series she cant come to terms with being different and in a lot of ways, alone... not a problem for me. As for SMG's acting job on that, well, i cant say, as mentioned above.

"But, these strong women characters?"

"Why aren't you asking 100 other guys why they don't write strong women characters?" -Joss Whedon

I know this is going a bit off topic, but did you not see "Sin City"? Awesome movie. And that's where Jessica Alba really took off, I'm pretty sure. I thought she was pretty good. She could pull off doing a scene with Bruce Willis without looking like a complete amataur, and that's rather impressive. Hasn't done much that was that great since then, though...

First of all I have to chime in with a few comments. The first thing I saw SMG in was Cruel Intentions and I hated her character. Sometimes seeing an antagonist in movies can cause you to really hate them. Look at Billy Zane from Titanic. Who likes him? I think being an antagonist in that really shot his career down, but I've seen some of the movies he's been in and he's a pretty good actor I think.

One of my friends who is a big Buffy fan kind of talked me into watching it cause Joss wrote Firefly as well. Since I love Firefly I thought I'd give it a shot (but I was wanred it wasn't as good as Firefly). I'm done with season 5 and it's not bad. Her character is necessary but only a small peice of the whole pie. I don't think SMG is a very good actress but I at least gave her a shot even though I didn't like her and I'm satisfied.

i suspect some people develop knee jerk blanket refusals as an effort to resist popular mentality. "if it's popular it must be crap" is the subconscious oppositional defiant thing going on, and they just pick a petty reason no one can possibly logically overcome to defend themselves with.

i adore nicholas cage. to-may-to, to-mah-to. i'm surprised no one's mentioned the actor everyone loves to rip down, keanu reeves, whom i also enjoy. people universally say he has a flat affect that is like a mask. i don't see it.

some people here are not separating the actress from the writing. if you don't like smg being "whiny" etc, you gotta talk to joss. cause that's how he wrote her. my husband and i both think buffy is a grade A selfish bitch who never learned to trust or let her friends in. doesn't mean we don't love the show. i don't hate smg, although i'm not too impressed with other movies i saw her in.

someone mentioned separating the actor/character thing. i have a hard time with this when i hear too much about the actor. i try not to read magazines like people/ew because the more i hear about people's reality, the more difficulty i have separating their roles from them. example: tom cruise. what a horrible person. i haven't been able to bring myself to watch mi3, even though mindless action flicks are my fav. i caught a bit of lestat at a friends house, loved the movie, could lose myself in the story/makeup. but to see him in contemp roles, all i'm doing is thinking "hateyouhateyou" and can't get into the movie to root for him.

i love movies. people have a right to live how they want. so i try to keep my head away from the gossip and just watch. i appreciate the idea of separating the 2 ideas, but it's hard sometimes.

ya know, the more i find out about adam baldwin, the more in love i am with jayne. adam is so gentle, refined, intelligent, wise... my god he's like some god among men. to be able to see him become jayne so completely makes me admire him all the more.

I just looked; a guy in England squirted him in the face and Tom called him a jerk. He asked the mother of his child to be quiet during birth. He believes in a quirky religion.
Sounds pretty average to me....

Chrisisall,
I think you are exactly right about the chemistry thing. My friends got me in to Dark Angel, so I thought I'd return the favor, and get them hooked on Buffy. They have since told me it's not only SMG, it's also the vibe of the show. What they refer to as "dumb monsters" and such just turned them off to it. I still think they are missing some of the best story arcs in tv history, but again, its just my opinion. Well, at least they like Firefly.

I never watched Buffy when it was on because the advertising made it seem like a show for women (and I was a 13-year old male). My less-than-great opinion of SMG was formed by my knee-jerk reaction to Buffy (I haven't really seen her in any other shows\movies). I recently started watching Buffy after my introduction to the Jossverse and I have this to say:

SMG is not a great actress but she can do the job, and can be very convincing in emotional moments (see Season 2). I have seen many worse actresses get higher praise. The show (Buffy) started out somewhat poor, but in Season 2 (starting with Surprise) picks up immensely, to the point where the second half of Season 2 IMHO can challenge or even beat Firefly (*dons flame-retardant clothes*). I have no intention of watching anything simply because it has SMG, but I will not be avoiding them either.

I wouldn't say season 2 of Buffy actually beats out Firefly, but it certainly was exciting. My opinion of SMG has never been very high, but there were a few scenes in that particular season that she really shined in.

Ditto. Tom Cruise has gotten to the point, with me at least, that I can never see him as his on-screen character. No matter what role he's playing, he walks on screen, and I say, "Oh look - it's Tom Cruise." I actually kinda liked him in Risky Business, and I thought he did a great job in Born On The Fourth Of July and in Rain Man, so I'll readily admit that there are some good roles he's played... but any more, I just see Tom Cruise, not his character. I think it started with those horrible Mission: Impossible movies, and just ballooned from there.

Harrison Ford is the same way for me. I loved him as Han Solo, of course, and as Rick Deckard in Blade Runner, but then I realized that Ridley Scott was the real genius behind that movie. Making it a film noir made Ford's wooden acting style actually work[i/]. [Deadpan monotone voiceover] "I knew the lingo. Every good cop did." :)

I loved Mel Gibson in Payback, but I'm probably one of about seven people who ever saw it. I thought it did a pretty good job of sticking close to the spirit (if not the actual word) of Richard Stark's (aka Donald E. Westlake's) original pulp novel.

As with many, I just couldn't get past SMG on Buffy. I avoided it for years and years. Then finally something happened: I was bored, I was home in the middle of the day, and I watched a couple episodes on FX or TNT in the summer of '05. What struck me wasn't SMG's acting abilities; I was still referring to her as "ratface" at the time. What struck a chord in me was the rest of the cast, and most of all, the writing. Before I knew it, I was hooked, and could even look forward to SMG's "Buffy-ness". :)

I suggest you tell your friends that SMG gets her butt kicked often in the series - perhaps that would entice them. Along, with assurances that it is really an ensemble crew with many talented alternatives to enjoy.

I started disliking the Buffy character around season 5 - OMG, what a whiner! And SMG always came off as a bit full of herself which didn't endear her to me, either. However, I fell in love with Willow, Giles, Xander and Spike to such a degree that Buffy was just an excuse to learn more about them.

Unwarranted egotism is a big problem for me when it comes to actors. The best of the bunch tend to be humble - at least in public. The no-talents (like Steven Segal) are often the ones bragging about their "box office" and such.

WHITEFALL

On the whiner in season 5+ I have this to say: if you've ever seen anyone be depressed, season 6 and 7 was basically that for buffy.

Select to view spoiler:

She came back from heaven, for one. And ultimately, buffy is the leader, buffy is the one with the powers, and that's one big bad metaphor for responsibility. See Angel season 5, buffy season 7 was basically that, Buffy still pissed at life cause it sucks, but stepping up and being a leader the only way she knows how. Is she a pain in the ass with the speeches, yes. Even joss called her on that through multiple characters. But I think it's a sort of flawed character thing, like when faith takes over the gang of potentials for a bit, it's because they are sick of buffy, cause she aint a great leader, but she has the experience by that point that no one else has. Ultimately, by season 7, because everyone else was getting so badass (willow, spike, giles, hell even xander in his incorporated way) buffy sorta becomes what she was created not to be: the bimbo with the powers. I think it's a good issue.

As for how SMG plays it... I think she does well in it, though a lot of it is the writing.

"But, these strong women characters?"
