I have been watching episodes of Firefly, Joss Whedons cancelled Sci Fi show set 500 years in the future, and talking with people who are fans, and it seems to me that the descision to cancel a show based on the current ratings system is flawed. The ratings system itself is flawed, so by definition any decision made using it's information will be flawed as well, right? As I understand the system 1 TV = X amount veiwers, based on data from the days when there was one TV per block, so it was conceivable that 20 people might gather at one house to watch a particular show.
In todays world, one family can have three or four TV's, a TiVo, and DVD player(s), all tuned in to different programs. I challenge anyone to come up with a workable, accurate formula to determine what people are watching, based on these facts. With this in mind, Firefly fans, Farscape fans, and fans in general, should be petitioning the enetertainment industry for a change in the rating system.

On another rant entirely, I love my DVD's but am having a crappy time finding the extras on them, like commentary and bloopers. Can anyone help?

Guywhowantsafireflyofhisown is right about the extras.

The commentaries are on the discs with the episodes they go with. Go to... what's it called... oh, okay, I got this (sorry, I'm remembering this from a friend's disc as I don't yet own my own)... click on the episode you want and go to "Language Selection" (or some other set of words that mean the same thing -- the place where you choose language, subtitles, etc.) If that episode has a commentary, that is where you will find it.

As for the rating systems... they are COMPLETELY messed up and I agree wit you 100%. I did not watch Firefly when it first came out, unfortunately; I didn't know about. But, I did wath every episode of Everwood -- my favorite show, the best in my opinion, which also get cancelled. However, my watching meant nothing because there's nothing to track what my TV is viewing. Only certain TVs are included in the sample used to do ratings -- those with "Nielson" (sp?) boxes. At least, that's how it was explained to me on the Everwood site. I think that's completely stupid and very flawed, in addition to every other flaw you pointed out. The whole system is a mess.

Yet, executives look at those ratings as gold and so GREAT shows (i.e. Firefly) get cancelled.

Yep, the rating systems do need radical overhauling.

In todays day and age of the Internet, studios should be getting input from fans online, and running polls on viewing habits. Not relying on the select few who have viewing boxes.

It's the same in the UK. I've never been asked what shows I watch, yet viewing figures blindly state 15 million watched this, or 3 million watched that.

For all I know, and despite assurances to the contrary, the few who do count for the viewing statistics may have nothing in common with my viewing habits.

It's also worth remembering that Studios themselves can manipulate the viewing figures. I can remember reading that it was largely fans who kept Star Trek (TOS) going. But the studio kept playing around with the viewing times and eventually cancelled it.

So ultimately it's about time the studios started respecting their viewers. To cancel a show after only 11 episodes is ridiculous, especially when the fan base continues to grow.
At least give a show a full first series, and then decide what to do.
