John picked himself off the floor and ran to Kaylee the lurch had caught her under the engine and shee had bumbed her head...hard. He pulled her out and check her head she was bleading quickly he carried her through the cargo bay to the infirmary.

"Simon" he yelled as he entered the slightly overcrowded room. Simon ran over and look at her she had crackedher skul on something. He lied her down and started working John walked into the cargo bay when as sudden as the first the ship lunged into a spin.

Okay...where were we? Oh yes...being boarded. Again. By pirates. Again.

Ertia pulled herself up from the floor and frowned. "What the hell was that?"

She was on her way upstairs to the bridge when the ship jolted again.

"Magnetic grappler." Wash's voice came over the com. "Prepare to be boarded, people."

"Again?" Ertia frowned. This ship was not the one she'd signed on to so long ago. In fact, why the hell did she stay? 'Mal. Kaylee. Zoe. Wash. River. Pain. Fly. Even Simon.' No, she'd risked everything for this ship, and to hell if anyone was going to board it without her permission!

She slapped the com, "Kaylee?"

"She's down." John's voice came back.

"I need airlock override protocol transferred to the cargo bay." She answered as calmly as she could, "Can you do it?"

Her hands were already reaching for the suit, pulling it on. "JAYNE! PAIN! Get grenades, get a suit and get yer butt down here!
Everyone else, seal up everything that leads to the bay! EVERYTHING! DO IT NOW!"

She sees Jayne tense up in anticipation, his face turning serious as he comprehends her plan. "We're gonna space the hwoon dahns."

"That's the plan." She clips their harnesses to the rails, giving them enough tether for mobility while ensuring that they don't get sucked out, then slaps the com again, "JOHN! OVERRRIDES? Have you got them?"

Glancing at Pain she blows him a kiss before picking up her helmet. "They'll lock in and try to blow our lock, thinking that we're barricaded against them. But I'm going to open the doors...If John can get me those overrides! ...and then..."

She gestures the grenades in their hands... "We're gonna lose pressure fast when those go off."

She slammed the override and the airlock slowly slid open to reveal a mob of armed men.

John ran to the engine room door to see if it had worked. He had done this type of thing before but not to a Firefly when he reached the door to the cargo bay he looked through the small window just as Pain through a grenade instantly he was down so much violence and hatred over whelmed his brain he inched his way as far as he could away from the door before colapsing completely.

Ertia held her hand over the button and waited, hearing Jayne's voice in her helmet, "NOW, GORRAMIT!"

The grenades bounced.

The men charged forward.

A raze of gunfire strafed across the cargo bay of Serenity, scattering holes in crates and sending rounds ricocheting.

Then there was the first explosion. Light. Sound. Chaos. Terror.

The ripping of plexi-shield.

The shattering of glass.
Screams, and then a rush of air streamed through cargo bay, sucking at Ertia's suit, pulling her harness tight.
The vague impression of parts and people jumbled and flying struck her and she slammed her hand down as the vacuum of space filled the void where the airlock of the other ship had tied to Serenity.

He's alive just unconcious. Pain you and Choo bring him into the infirmary.

Sure thing doc. Choo you get his legs.

*Choo nodded, bent down and picked up John by the legs as Pain picked him up, putting his arms underneath John's. The two men then carried John into the infirmary and set him down in the exam chair. Ertia watched from the doorway as Simon hooked John up to various monitors. Simon turned to the three of them and said*

If you three don't mind I need to do some test and observations on John here.

*Pain replied*

Do what you gotta do doc.

*Pain stepped out of the infirmary, putting an arm around Ertia's shoulder and watched as the doc went to work on John.*

Simon turned around as John climbed off of the examining table.

"You suffered no phsyical injuries just serious mental trauma"

"What caused such trauma"

"Grenades" John leaped of the table and turned to Kaylee. "How is she"

"Fine I gave her stiches and she should wake up soon"

John turned and walked toward the door. "You should tell her" Her turned and skipped away.

WOW Kaylee can operate the ship while unconcious she really is a darn fine maechanic

Welcome home, 13! Glad the surgury went well and sending thoughts for speedy recovery!
And ya, I wondered how we were gonna pull off hard burn with Kaylee and John both down...Maybe Shepherd Book was in the Engine room? Yah, that's it!

Ertia sighed as she stripped off her suit and shoved it back into the closet. Wrapping both arms around Pain she hugged him close. "Pain, if Wolf's right, they aren't going to stop coming. There's only one way to end this."

"We aren't turning over Mal." Pain assured her, but she looked up at him with crystal clarity in her eyes.

"We have to kill Niska. We should have done it the last time, but we didn't. One way to end this now, to set Wolf free and get past this... and that's to kill him."

Zoe's calm voice spoke behind her. "And how are we gonna do that? We're outgunned, outnumbered. Even if we call in every favor we have left, we're still just a single bullet compared to his battalion."

"I dunno." Ertia shrugged, "But we're smart. We're resourceful. We've survived this long, and not by running."

"We need to make a stand." Zoe said the words slowly, still mulling the possibility even as she affirmed it.

"We'll get to John's brothers, let Mal heal. Then we find a way to stop them." Pain agreed, although his eyes, too, held uncertainty.

"Not stop them. Kill HIM. Once and for all." Ertia reiterates, wondering when she stopped being the pacifist and started becoming the killer. Just today her plan had taken how many lives?

Quietly, she sighs, "Anybody see Shepherd Book?" Silently she added, 'I could use a prayer.'

No worries, Choo. It was in the second post of this thread... s'okay. Got it covered. Kaylee never actually answered Wash...so we don't know that it was her who set full burn...

"Thanks, Babe. But it's not that big of a ship. I'll find him." She gave his hand a squeeze before turning and making her way through the ship. Every step seemed to drag her down, and it was more than just her recent head injury, or the draining of the adrenalin from their latest escape.

Shepherd wasn't in his room. Nor was he in the Galley. She was just about to call him over the com, worried that he'd somehow been in the cargo bay and gotten sucked out, when she heard a distinct clank from the engine room.

If Kaylee and John were in the infirmary...then who was in... WOLF... If he was screwin' with their engine she was gonna take him out!

Dropping into Pain's bunk, she accessed the hidden panel and pulled out her laser pistol. Half-charge. That was plenty.

Turning sidewise, she edged down the corridor towards the engine room door. Another clank, a rasp of metal... She held her pistol in both hands and spun into the doorway, leveling her gun, "DROP IT!"

"I don't think I should I do that." Book's calm voice answered her. In his hands was the directional capacitor. "These tend to be delicate."

"Shepherd?" Ertia lowered her pistol, stunned. "What are you..."

"Oh, I know a thing or two about engines." He explained in that calm, reasonably cheerful tone. "I thought with Kaylee injured, I could at least do what I know how to do."

He settled the capacitor in place and locked it down, neatly reattaching wiring and closing the hatch. "There. Now, what can I do for you?"

"Shepherd...I ..." There was a long silence as she gathered her thoughts. Then she shut down her pistol and dropped it onto Kaylee's toolbox before falling to her knees beside the hammock. "Forgive me, father, for I have sinned."

errr...I'm in the Engine room talking to Book, Wolf.

"Ertia?" Book's hand dropped lightly to her shoulder, "I didn't think you were Catholic, child."

She shook her head, "I'm not! I wasn't.. I don't know. I'm not me anymore."

Tortured eyes met his kindly gaze, "I'm changing, Shepherd. Goddess help me, I wanted to kill those men today! I've ...when did I become a murderer?"

"You've done what you needed to do to protect those around you." His voice is firm, calming, like a balm, "You are the mother. This ship is your child. And you fought to protect it."

Tears roll down her cheeks and she drops her forehead to his knee, "I killed...killed them. Them...and before them, Wolf's men with that grenade, and before that... I'm... how many? How much blood?"

Book closed his eyes, feeling her grief. How well did he know it? How did one who swore to do good reconcile that oath with the oath to protect? "God knows your heart, child. Trust him."
Remembering that she was a Goddess worshipper he hesitated..."Trust HER. She knows her children, often when we know not ourselves."

six or seven posts back, when Ertia asked Pain and Zoe if they'd seen Shepherd Book. She then found Book in the Engine Room, solving the mystery of who set the ship for hard burn when Kaylee and John were both unconscious.
