Ok, I just have to share this email from a friend to whom I sent the DVD set for Xmas--a fellow Ph.D. in literature, by the way, so not a dumb woman or someone with bad taste. I'd love to drop this in FOX's lap and say, simply--"YOU IDIOTS!":

"Imagine me as John (Jon?) Stewart, when he puts his fist in the air and growls at an imaginary someone, 'Curse you. . . .[fill in the blank with the name of a current villain] for [fill in the blank with a treacherous act].'

I say, 'Curse you, Lee Heller, for buying me the complete Firefly!!!'

I am completely, hopelessly hooked. I finally got a chance to indulge myself properly in it over the long weekend last weekend (after having watched most of it piecemeal), and now I watch it *every* night. How pathetic is that?????? I totally agree that disks 3 and 4 plus the 2-hour pilot are the best. Objects in Space is soooooo wonderfully weird; heart of gold is a lovely mixture of space/cowboys, and the captain "gets" a girl, sort of !! And the name of the one that ends with the funeral for the old army buddy made me cry---and then I listened to the composer who said it was the music he wrote after the show was cancelled and it was his theme of goodbye. I'm looking forward to the movie!! Any news on that?

It's great we're getting new converts (way to go, Lee!). But I feel kind of sorry for people who didn't know much, or anything, about FF and get it all at once. And then there's nothing more. "Breaks the heart." I hope that movie gets going soon.

I read what you write and I get so sad. This was it. Firefly was it. I wish there was more. I can't express myself right now though. There is too much emotion in me.

It is sad, but at the same time heartening: remember, Star Trek got killed, and went on to have this amazing afterlife far bigger than anyone could have anticipated. So I remain hopeful. And in a way, it's neat for people to get the whole thing at once and just immerse themselves in the FF world.

I have made it my mission to hook as many people as possible on this series, partly for the DVD sales figures, and partly because I want to share the joy. For Xmas I gave it to my mom and my two best friends; I just sent a copy to SF-loving friends in Thailand, and gave another to a law school acquaintance who is fannish and a "Buffy" lover. Add to that my own copy and that's six so far. I swear, if I thought I could, I'd buy a hundred and hand 'em out on street corners. . .

PARADISO

Just another convert (and English grad to boot) signing off on a wonderful series. I had little recollection of it when it was on the air and was introduced to it in the DVD format over Christmas. I've been trying to strech them out since then but I just finished "The Message" the other day and am rapidly running out of episodes.

Were there things I disliked or didn't agree with? Sure, but they were all forgivable in the face of such compelling characters. Ye gods! I'm hard pressed to find one I *didn't* love.

Hey, just keep watchin' 'em over and over--that's what we're all doing! And there are the commentary tracks to listen to as well! Joss's track on "Objects in Space" is particularly worth your while because it begins with an extended meditation on his crisis of faith at age 16, while he was reading Jean Paul Sartre and contemplated existentialism and meaninglessness in a world without faith.

I think this show works well with English/Humanities types (I have a Ph.D. in it myself, and another recent convert friend of mine is Phudded in History) because of how smart it is. Complex characters, sharp and interesting dialogue, thematic layers, a universe that promises to be rich and diverse--isn't that what most of us lit/history types want? "Babylon 5" had the social intelligence, but not the complex characters, so its storylines were much more externally oriented, whereas FF, in just 14 episodes, already held the promise of complex histories and interactions amongst its family of characters. Don't get me wrong--I LOVE "Babylon 5"--but I do love narratives that come out of and involve the emotional trajectory that a character is travelling.

Part of the tragedy of this series' cancellation is that those trajectories were stopped in mid-flight. We all know from "Buffy" and "Angel" that a Joss Whedon series can take its characters to interesting places. Imagine what we might have seen had he been able to go forward with these adult characters, in a world not distracted by vamps, demons, and other external factors. . .

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Way to go Leeh!!!!

I love to hear about new converts and read their comments on the show. It is kind of sad that they have not know the joy of the show as long as we have, but they don't have to suffer the sitting on the edge of the seat waiting on news of cancellation, or hearing of the sets being destroyed. They get to go from the DVD set, in all its glory, straight to the movie.

It is wonderful to see all the Browncoats flocking to the banner of Firefly.

I converted one of my teachers. He's spreading it around all of the sci-fi and western fans in the school. In the meantime I'll have to find more.

I'll sew your skin into my clothes.

Never quite understood that - do they eat the flesh, or make clothing out of it? Or, do they sometimes eat it, and sometimes make it into clothing? Because that would just be wierd...like wearing a hamburger.

I think it's both. Some parts of you they eat, some parts they sew into their clothes.

And it's great to hear about new Firefly fans, I just wish more people caught it while the show was still going. I just wonder, though, if any network would ever bring the show back into production.

By "skin" they mean the dermis, the surface layer. By "flesh" they mean the muscle and such. By "rape" they mean... hey, I wonder if they have a lot of women? I'm guessing it's one of those chauvinistic gentleman-only clubs.

I dunno - flesh is the stuff which covers bones...ie skin. As for eating some parts, and discarding others: flesh is the same all over the body, which brings us back to wearing a hamburger...

Just wanted to stop by and say that I have just finished wathcing the DVD set and have to say..

...I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!

Why o why did it have to be cancelled?!?!?!

I live in Australia so saw the DVD set without having seen any of the episodes on TV. (We didn't get it here and are unlikely too)

I heard about the shappy treatment the show recieved in terms of FOX's scheduling. At least Angel still lives, kinda.

I took a gamble in importing it and it was worth every cent. I hope that Firefly comes back in some shape or form in the future as I WANT MORE!!!!

Do you wear any leather? That's just animal skin treated with a preservative. And if you're a carnivore, then I'm sure you've eaten an animal that's also used to make a pair of boots.

Correct as far as it goes SLK, but maybe it needs to go a little farther.

If steve580 is being serious, then he doesn't know the difference between skin, (epidermal tissue) and muscle (sub-dermal tissue.)

Dried skin is called raw hide, chemically treated skin is called leather. Beneath the skin is muscle tissue ... also known as flesh ... also known as meat. Dried flesh (meat) is called jerky, chemically treated flesh is called marinated. Flesh which has been treated with heat is called cooked, broiled, roasted, barbequed ... depending upon the particular process.

If steve580 is putting us on, he has done a marvelous job. If he isn't, then ....

Thanks. I'm a big sci-fi fan and so I keep myself up-to-date with what is happening. I certainly help the movie/tv/stage show/pantomime/anything!! goes ahead.
