Okay, some time ago, I saw ads on TV for this great new series from the creator of "Buffy". . .a sci-fi called "Firefly". I thought, "You know, if I had time to watch television, I bet that would be a cool show."

Some time later, I actually found myself HOME one Friday evening and flipping channels. I came across what looked like a western (which I enjoy), where a team of horses were pulling a large wagon along a shallow creek. Ominous music suggested that they were about to get jumped. I spent the next hour completely enraptured by "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and decided that FOX had come up with a pretty good idea.

Well, some CONSIDERABLE time later, I found myself stuck in Kandahar, Afghanistan. See. . .me being a proud member of the North Carolina National Guard, I had done gone and got myself activated and am now currently engaged in the War on Terror. . .for what that might be worth. . .and I'm walking around in our little PX here, where they have a LARGE selection of DVD movies. See. . .most of us here, what free time we get, we spend it on the internet or watching movies. Not much else to do, actually.

I saw the box set for this TV show and the name rang a bell in my memory. "Firefly"? Hmmmmmmmmm.

Well, I spent the next several nights watching at least two episodes, and each time I thought of how this absolute genius creation of JW's could be tossed aside by FOX, I got angrier and angrier.

Well, bad weather around here made it near-impossible to fly helicopters, so the gents and ladies in my particular company spent many a night of work sitting around watching whatever we could. We watched the entire first season boxed set of "The Dead Zone". . .SEVERAL seasons of "CSI". . .and after that, someone asked if we had anything else. I offered up "Firefly."

As a group, we just finished Disk Two of the set. The show has 63 more confirmed fans, and as I was walking back to my tent after work, I passed two guys and happened to overhear a bit of their conversation. . .

"So then what?"
"Well. . .River comes out of nowhere, glances out the door. . .bullets flying everywhere, she picks up a pistol, closes her eyes, spins out like some ballerina and blows the three guys away."

So the joy has spread to Afghanistan. Here's hoping that Joss gets Firefly on the big screen. . .but to be honest, I think it would break my heart to see these cool folks for only two more hours before I then had to sit and wait for another gorram year or so for ANOTHER two hour tease. . .as much as I'd love a Firefly Movie. . .I'd rather see someone have the good sense to put the series back together.

Aaaaaaaaaaaanyhow. . .new name on the board. . .the name's "Static", and if you've got words, whether they're agreeable or otherwise, I'd take it as a kindness to hear a reply.

"Wash. . .we got some local color happening. A grand entrance would not go amiss."

Welcome to the boards Static, we're glad you're here. The company is generally well behaved, and I can honestly say the fans of Firefly are going to do their best to make sure that 2 hour movie hits the theaters.

Thanks for joining us and keeping us safe at night. All our thoughts go out to you and your brethren.

Cheers.

well. . .Don't overplay it. I had the advantage of a captive audience. It's pretty cool hearing that Firefly has invaded our minds, though. No kidding. . .right now outside my tent, someone is playing a guitar and I swear it's "The Ballad Of Serenity". . .but the COOLEST thing I've heard so far is this.

My company is aviation. Apache Helicopters, to be precise. Our primary mission is to respond to calls for close air support from the infantry and special forces guys on the ground. . .come screaming in. . .blow up the bad guys, go screaming out. A recent radio call we received recently from a Special Forces commander who was pinned down. . .he ACTUALLY SAID my 'tagline'. . ."We've got some local color happening. . .a grand entrance would not go amiss."

Is this the coolest, or what?

LOVE your Firefly stories! Such a kick when the lingo makes it's way into our consciousness. The writing on Firefly is top notch and lends itself well to those livin' the soldier life.

And remember what it makes you when you and your crew arrive in the nick of time: "Big Damn Heroes!"

Yep, that's my math. Now, for the number of people I've thought about converting, that's a mite bigger.

THIS IS SO COOL!!!!!!

Okay, check this out. We had a minor (very minor) issue arise early this morning (it is early in the AM here, about 7.45 local) and the First Sergeant of my company was trying to talk to me about what was going on. Some kid, a mechanic in the company, was trying to interject his opinion. For the record, not only was his opinion VERY unsolicited, but he was also so WOEFULLY uninformed, that he made about as much sense as . . .well. . .as River ever does.

So, First Sergeant turns to this kid and says, "Clint. . .your mouth is talkin'. . .you might want to look to that."

I collapsed in laughter.

It amazes me how quickly you 'absorb' the lingo after watching the show.

Hey, guys. . .I posted these words in another thread. . .I hope you don't mind that I put them up in here as well. . .just some words I'd not mind sharing if you'd not mind hearing.

You know. . .The song has particular meaning to me for three reasons. The more obvious reason being that I'm an aviator, and flying is, for anyone that's done it, a truly singular experience. . .whether you're flying a medevac, a heavy lifter, or a gunship (like myself).

The second reason is a bit more poetical. On my recent 'world tour' with the military, I've come to realize that while this world is a great big jigsaw puzzle, lots of pieces of water, lots of pieces of land. . .the whole world only has one sky. Unbroken and shared by all. As long as there is one single sky, I'm connected with my friends and family.

The third reason is a great deal more poetical. Terrorists can try to take our resolve, our strength, and those things and people we love. . .but they cannot and will not ever take away our sky, which has always been a universal symbol of hope. Which, incidentally, is why I am so proud to fly a gunship in this war. . .because I am quite literally protecting the sky. . .the symbol of hope. . .from those who would destroy hope.

Just a thought or two. I tend to ramble a bit. I'm flawed in that way, I suppose.

I'm glad to hear your story, Static. Maybe you can borrow your gunship from the military for a day and we can take a trip to FOX and when we are done with our business there then we can take trip over to Universal and talk some sense into them. I think that is what Mal would do at least.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the board Static. We are always glad to welcome another Browncoat to the fold. Hope to see you posting when you get a chance to get on the net.

63 converts, huh? That is one might impressive number. I thought I was doing pretty gorram good with the eight I have.

I remember how lonely it can be in a foreign country with not much to occupy your free time. When I was in Kuwait and then Iraq during Desert Storm and Shield, we did not have the internet, and movies were something we didn't get much either. It is great that you and your brothers & sisters in arms have Firefly to watch.

Just want to say thank you for what you and your comrades are doing for us over there. Watch your backs and keep flyin'!

Keep those Firefly related stories coming.

I'm new here, so a big hello to all of you! Now, I really don't want to come off as a terrible human being as I assure you I'm not, and Static, best of luck to you on getting home in one piece.

I joined this site specifically to respond to that quote. It seems to me that BrownCoat1 has misinterpreted the show in a very crucial way. The Browncoats were the Independents. They were the minority with inferior means. The ALLIANCE was the superpower trying to take over the world. It strikes me that you're making a critical error in calling a soldier of the superpower a Browncoat. Again, Static, I say bext of luck to you, I certainly hope you don't die or suffer injury. You just happen to be Alliance and not a Browncoat. Sorry! Better luck next time!

Well now. . .I think the use of the term 'Browncoat' is more in reference to someone who is a "Firefly" enthusiast, rather than the reference to someone who is in the REAL world, a soldier for a superpower. So perhaps you are the one making the misinterpretation? Maybe?

Just at thought.

No biggie DagNabbit. We aren't to hard to get along with around here.

Shiny & Static are right though, we call ourselves Browncoats because we love the show, and the term Browncoats has been pretty much associated with the fan base. Kind of fits if you think about it. Fox is the Alliance, and we, the outnumbered and underdog Browncoats are fighting for the return of our show.

JAYNE'SJOJO

Due to the weather and inept Northwest employees, I got stuck at an airport for 9 hours this past weekend...
after being pulled off the plane for a SECOND time (after sitting on there an hour waiting to take off) I walked by the NW employee who had "forgot" to call the de-icer to come de-ice the plane and without thinking said, "I get the feeling you weren't troubled with an over abundance of schoolin'"

I might have felt bad about it, except they had made me get to the aiport at 5:30am that day and I didn't end up leaving until 2:30pm because by the time she did get the de-icer there the bad weather had closed in and we were stuck... SHINY!

It's wonderful to have you Static...stay safe, stay well and keep flyin'. You and those you serve with are our big damn heroes.
