May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Does Firefly translate well into German, or will this be an English viewing??

I fear, we'll have to watch it in German, although the German version is crap. You just cannot translate Joss ... and then, the Serenity crew speaks "high" German (no Western Slang available here, and it would be stupid, to give them an German dialect - like bavarian or such).

So I'll might have to stop once in a while, to tell my colleagues, what the guys just "really" said ...

Must be over by now unless they loved it
so much that they forced you to hold a
marathon showing.

We're eager to know how the conversion
went.

(anyone reading here tonight please go to
the syfy VOTE! thread, click the link,
and vote. Time is running out.)

Thanks for asking back, so here is my report:

They liked it so far, but I don't know, whether they will become real browncoats (and join FFF.net). They are just too "normal", I guess. One is thinking about buying the DVD though. Maybe I'll do another showing of the following episodes(next time on a Friday, so they can stay longer).

Anyways, one knew, that there was a movie, and he asked whether there was a sequel, and I said "we are still fighting for it". So he looked kinda surprised and said "we?" And I replied with some proud: "I'm a Browncoat", which ckracked them up a bit. So Im working on it ...

It's just that the German translation is sooo crapy!!!

This is why I didn't even try it. The German version is absolutely unsuited for any serious conversion attempts. The dubbing seems rushed and the voices are just plain off (Mal sounds too young, Kaylee sounds too old and so forth).

Secondly, the sci-fi-genre is just not very popular in Germany. Sure, we have our share of mainstream fans (Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien), but everything besides that generates only little interest. The "country & cowboy subject" is not that popular either so Firefly had and is having a hard time here.

Which is a shame, I might add.

I have a German friend who became a huge Firefly fan, but she was already a Buffy & Angel fan...and her English is excellent so she has watched all of Joss Whedon's shows in their original English.

She was very frustrated that 'Serenity' never showed in Germany (or I guess it did, in about two theaters...far away from where she lives) so she had to watch it on DVD.

Brava, dear Esther! I am so proud of you.
Did you blush? I've gone pink a couple of
times trying to explain.

But I never give up. Today I made a note to try
to find out if there's an auto license plate
frame which says "My Other Ship is a Firefly."

Hang in there, and keep that coat all shiny
clean.

Esther nice work. You've done just what a browncoat should do

I find that you can not force FF/Serenity on ppl. It's just a turn-off and will be that much harder to get them to watch it later.

Well I am happy with myself tonight. I've won a small victory. I have gotten my oldest son and his girlfriend to sit down long enough to catch the pilot eps "Serenity". At first they didn't seem to be interested but later when I looked over to where they were sitting their eyes were glued to the tv (Z does the happy dance). At the end as the credits were rolling they both told me it was very good. I caught my son several time laughing at Jayne and Wash's lines ( like I didn't know that would happen).

Anyway like your friends Esther, I don't think that they will become die-hard FF fans but my goal is just to get them to watch the whole series and see what happens. Maybe they will spread the word about the verse without becoming rugged browncoats themselves. That would be fine with me.

What a coincidence! I'm attempting a couple recruits right now: my roommate and her boyfriend. They're downstairs at this moment watching the first ep. I hope they like it! (I swear, her boyfriend reminds me of Wash so much....)

Here's hoping to these and many more recruits!

My Swedish Friends became INSTANT Browncoats.. They had me buy them a copy of the movie and a boxed set of the series (They speak English VERY well) and ship it to them.. they have a DVD player that will play any region's DVD (He's an engineer and programmer), and they're cursing me for going to Dragon*Con this year.. if they'd known about it sooner they'd have flown over and gone also (They're both here on business several times a year anyway).

I promised them a T-shirt and autographs (if I can get them)

They couldn't find an "english" copy locally...
