Now, this is a bit of a speech, but there are questions for my fellow brown-coats in here.

So, as the title says...At the beginning of July, I took a bus out to this summer theatre job in Massachusetts. Packing was the worst...I'm too much of a packrat to leave anything behind. However, when it came to room and where to fit my DVD's...I came to a serious problem. Should I bring the Series and BDM? I debated it to myself for some time. On one hand, what's a fan without Firefly in close proximity? But, on the other hand, my laptop won't play anything but music CD's, and the place I'd be staying doesn't have a running TV and DVD player, and I'm not about to bring mine on a Greyhound. In the end...I decided to leave them, planning a Shindig with the projector screens on campus when I return to Uni. It was a painful departure and in order to control my craving, I subscribed to The Signal and Firefly Talk podcasts, downloaded the extended bloopers from Youtube, and put the ballad of Jayne in my regular work-day playlist. I've gotten a few looks and made a few friends from belting it out whenever it comes up, but that's neither here nor there. Point is, I'm missin' the 'Verse.

So, what do you guys do when you aren't able to watch the show when you want, be it from a lack of a DVD player or anything? Any places to frequent? I'd post a bunch here, but discussing the show kinda makes me wanna watch them more, and my fan-art needs more work before I start posting it...

Dear Diary... Today, we were kidnapped by hill folk never to be seen again. It was the best day ever.

It's obvious you can get here, FFF.net, so drop in, grap a bottle of Mudders Milk, and conversify with the rest of us. That and get the Firefly theme as a ringtone for you phone. So whenever you feel withdrawl, play the theme and at least you can walk aagin. And if you can't walk, Crawl. And if you can't do that, get someone ta carry ya. Maybe Kaylee.

Wash: Closing in.
Zoe: Planet's coming up a might fast.
Wash: That's just 'cause I'm goin' down too quick. Likely crash and kill us all.
Mal: Well, if that happens, let me know.

I've haven't seen the TV show in 3 weeks, but I saw the movie last Friday night. It was on Cinemax, I watched it on the HD Cinemax channel. It was in letterbox format, though, so some of the shots didn't look right.
Anyway, to get me by till I decide to watch the series again, I play the TV series and movie soundtracks on my computer and it makes me remember the scenes the music came from. I also come on here throughout the day, readin and postin. Those two things help me get my Firefly fix.

Hmmm ... since buying the DVDs, the longest time I've gone is about a month.

They're great to play while doing stuff you really don't want to do -- kind of sugar-with-the-medecine.

Yep.

Longest I ever went without is when I bought the Chosen Collection- Buffy every day for like two months straight.

Nice to see Serenity at the end of all that.

What was that Chrisisall

*drops a bombshell*

I've seen the series... once. I recently rewatched the first three episodes, planning on seeing the rest too but cancelled that on hearing a remastered HD version was about to be unleashed on the public.

If I watch something twice in reasonably quick succession, I memorise it all and find it hard to watch again. This way, I can come to the show fresh every couple of years.

It was filmed in widescreen. I get everything in widescreen, if I can.

Yay! I return from work with a cargo-hold full o' advice. Thanks guys. Perhaps I will crash 'round these parts for a bit. I don't have a cell phone (that's not in pieces) but I do like the idea.

Sorry to hear about your amazing memory Simonwho. (wow. That's a new one...)I suppose it's best...I couldn't imagine watching Firefly becoming a tedious chore...

I always thought Widescreen and Letterbox were two separate styles, myself...I'll look it up on Wikipedia or something...

I maybe be wrong, but I think it has to do with the size of the screen. The if the black bars are really big, then it's letterbox.(sorry, I'm at a loss for words and can't think of a technical way to describe this) If they're there, but not ginormous, then it's widescreen, and if they're not there it's fullscreen.

But I could just be pulling that out of my... um, ear.

Letterbox is the aspect ratio (width/height ratio) that most theatrical movies have been filmed in filmed in. Widescreen has become the standard for HDTV. I'm not sure why they switched, but there is a difference

TV (NTSC) => 4:3
Letterbox => 2.35:1
widescreen => 16:9

That's my understanding.
I would think that ElDusto meant to say Pan&Scan (fullscreen), but he also said that it was viewed it on HD Cinemax, and I was under the impression that they broadcast in Original Aspect Ratio. So I may be trippin' also...

I think the poster of "it was in letterbox" meant to say that "it wasn't in letterbox"

I don't know... Serenity was filmed in 2.35
Cinemax HD airs Serenity in 1.78

Letterboxing is the presentation of a widescreen film with black bars at the top and bottom.

they can't call DVDs letterboxed because the bars are added (to 1.78-1.85) films in the player, because viewing a DVD on a widescreen tv has no letterboxing.

I haven't checked the link you posted yet but the breakdown of 4:3, 2.35 and 16x9 is wrong...

I'm not sure of the names off the top of my head but, 1.66, 1.85, 2.1, 2.35 and 3.0 all have different names based on the lens that were used to film osciloscope, panara- man I can't think right now

Sorry, I was thinking letterbox and fullscreen where the same and I don't know why. I'm dumber when I'm at work.
Cinemax HD was actually showing it in fullscreen last Friday night, cause the HD channel we get out here feeds off of the west coast timed Cinemax and that channel was showing it in fullscreen, also. When I watched it earlier on the east coast Cinemax, they too were showing it it in fullscreen. It kind of sucked cause in some of the scenes where the characters are on opposite ends of the screen, like when Mal and the Operative stand off at the end, half of their bodies were not shown and you could barely see them.

Cool, I get it now.
I think 'letterbox' is kinda like the old way of saing 'widescreen', since at first peeps had to understand why the black bars were there- they thought they were missing the top and bottom of the picture.
So 'widescreen' can refer to any widescreen aspect ratio (2.35 to 1, 1.78 to 1, etc., and widescreen TV's are generally 16:9 which fits 1.78:1 and puts tiny black bars in on 2.35:1).
Well, that my understanding anyway...

Where's Mal's head- oh, it's full screen...Chrisisall

SASSALICIOUS

I went 2 months without the show this summer. And after travelling 32 miserable hours, I just wanted to watch an episode or 2 and pass out. But could I? NO! Because my roommate lent the DVDs to a friend!!!!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I kind of feel like a dirty hippie right now, but I'm loving every moment.
