I've seen a lot of stuff saying that Firefly was going to be good. Most of the negative stuff is not about the show itself, but about the way Fox is handling it.

Anyone know if this article appears in the hard copy of the magazine or just on the web? EW apparently thinks its unnecessary to warn people when their subscriptions have run out and I don't really want to pay the cover price unless it is. Oh and any pictures of Jayne?

I won't say I fell in love. But when I heard, back in December, that Joss Whedon was doing a space opera, my immediate was, Well, of course. SF is a popular genre, but it's stuck in a nasty rut, both on the screen and in the bookstore. On the one hand you have the Hollywood crap, all brainless blood and thunder. On the other you have these endless, pretentious "epics" that are plotted to death, and as believable as a bad soap opera.

What's needed is somebody who can produce all the physical excitement that Hollywood demands, but who also understands simple basic storytelling. And for that, who else is there?

Oh poor Jewel, the only credit she gets is "from the film flop Cheaters". I definitely liked this cast picture better than the one up at the site. They all look terribly uncomfortable and more than a little confused in that one. Maybe the pictures will hook some viewers just by showing off the pretties, I wasn't terribly impressed by the article though.

Ms. Straite's problem is that most of her credits are on Canadian TV. Now, there are a lot good Canadian TV shows, and it's a pity that US cable and public broadcasters don't import as many as they used to. But somehow I don't think Canadian shows -- or Canada for that matter -- has ever produced much of a blip on EW's radar!

OK, I got to ask. What's so attractive about Jayne? He's not very bright, and he has no table manners. I admit that he excels at "public relations", but is that really attractive?

Hidden depths, okay! He's obviously a much more complex character than he initially comes across as and... ah, screw it. He's hot! He's a big, handsome hunk of man meat and that's really all I need to know. Seriously though, I doubt Jayne's going to turn out to be the most sensitive, or hell, intelligent guy on the series, but I got the impression that he wasn't as dumb as he at first appeared. Hidden depths, really.

I don't think Canada has contributed a whole lot that EW would cover but there are quite a few shows done up here:

Jeremiah, Stargate SG-1, Earth: Final Conflict, Lexx, First Wave and I'm sure a few more.

Okay, some of these are U.S. shows filmed up here, etc, but shows like Lexx are uniquely Canadian...whether that's a good thing or not I don't know. I think it's pretty good but I kinda like campy stuff.

One of my favorite shows, and one that can't be seen anywhere but Canada (until it's released on DVD) is a series filmed outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia called Trailer Park Boys. It's a "mockumentary" about two ex-cons who are trying to go straight...and usually end up breaking the law doing it. Filmed with digital cameras, the show is vulgar, funny, smart and touching. I'd take this show anyday over what is being offered from the big U.S. networks as "comedies."

Uh, no, Lexx's producers are (or were, the show appears to be dead) Canadian, but at least half the cast is from Europe. The credits say it's Candian-German.

As for the others -- they're shot in Canada, but so is the X Files, and a lot of other U.S. shows. I've never heard of Jerimiah, but I know that Stargate and Earth are both owned by U.S. production companies and have dominately U.S. casts and crews.

Isn't there an union rule in the contract, which stipulates that if a series is filmed in Canada, a certain percentage of the cast and crew must be Canadian?

I think that's the case. A majority of the crew has to be Canadian and some cast members (usually guest stars--in the case of the X-Files, the Lone Gunmen were all Canadian, as is William B. Davis). It's only fair.

Three of the four production companies for Lexx are Canadian, most of the filming (afaik) is done in Halifax, as are some of the visual FX (Canada and Germany, I think--2 companies are housed here in Canada).

In Canada we view it as mostly a Canadian show while in other countries it might be seen differently. For five years we still claimed XF as our own.

Jeremiah is a series from J. Michael Straczynski and is shot outside of Vancouver. Earth: Final Conflict is shot exclusively in Toronto and most of the production companies are Canadian. Space: The Imagination Station had a Canada Day marathon and it was for E:FC, so that kind of says something. I'd assume that at least half the crew would be Canadian.

The way I see it, if the show is shot here (which means a percentage of the cast/crew MUST be Canadian) for most of its life it's not Canadian per se but we should get some credit. Afterall, shows like X-Files and Millennium wouldn't have their signature "look and feel."

I'm reminded of something I heard once on the CBC. They went into a bookstore in New York and asked for "Canadian authors". Nope, sorry, we don't have any. Oh, but do you have anything by Margaret Atwood? Saul Bellow? William Gibson? Well, of course!

If I'm nitpicky about distinguishing Candian TV from TV produced in Canada, it because I much prefer the former. When Canadians make shows for their own consumption, they tend to be just a bit more intelligent and creative.

I suppose that's why I really enjoy "Trailer Park Boys." If this show became "popular"--I don't know if it's even cult status yet!--it would be terrible. Or heaven forbid if MTV got a hold of it.

You make a good point though. Maybe Canada could make its own sci-fi series.

Fortunately there are good shows like TPB (good is a matter of taste!) and "History Bites" among many others (too many to list!). Canadian programming is a lot better than it was in the 80s and 70s.
