Hello all!

Chafes me a little that my first post is such a superficial one, but I am curious as to what people think:

Near the beginning of "Serenity", as they're about to rabbit from the Alliance cruiser, Wash says, "Hang on, travellers!"

Now, some of you may remember an RPG called "Traveller" (looooong ago....). This quote brought it strongly to mind, especially as the premises of the show and the game world are so similar.

For those who aren't scratching their head or rolling their eyes, whaddaya think? Coincidence or....?

Might be coincidence, might not. Only Joss and the writers know, I suppose. Traveller is cool. I noticed that too, and I thought of Traveller...(cue Twilight Zone music)

This was mulled over a lot at the time on the 'main' Traveller BB (Citizens of the Imperium at travellerrpg.com). General concensus was that Firefly is as close to Traveller for TV as you will probably ever get. Firefly is a very Classic Traveller type of setting but with some significant differences from the Official Traveller Universe. The episode Train Job really plays out like a lot of old Traveller adventures. But someone has also pointed out that the term Traveller was originally used in a Sci-Fi book series which had many similarities to the Traveller universe that came later.

My theory is that it is an indirect influance, but it would be neat if Traveller was a significant inspiration for some of the people who put Firefly together.

Firefly threads pop up regularly on CotI, and there is one up right now about what Serenity would look like if designed using Traveller ship design rules.

BTW, Classic Traveller is back in print and there is a new T20 as well.

Traveller, if you go to Sparta, tell them you have seen us lying here as the Law commands.
