I was watching my DVDs (love 'em, love 'em, love 'em) -- Out of Gas with the commentary on and I found out something VERY interesting.

Tim Minear is talking to the director of the ep during the scene where Inara is talking with Simon just outside of the infirmary. TM says that in this scene there is a hint as to why Inara left Sihnon.

Well, she doesn't say too much in that scene but in response to Simon's observation that dying from suffocation is a bad way to go -- she DOES say: "I don't want to die at all."

So, I think that Inara is dying. Something incurable - something slow.

Which is why she left the core planets - they could do nothing else for her and she decided to see if one of the rim worlds could help her with an unconventional treatment. Her visit to Ariel was to check on the progress of the disease and not a regularly scheduled 5000 km checkup. The crew wouldn't doubt her word about that and even if they did, who could they ask?

Which is also why she's trying to discourage Mal's feelings for her (and hers for him) b/c she knows he'll be bereaved again and she can't bear to hurt him.

Sooooo, that's my big theory. Whatchoo think?

BTW, I'm a very occasional poster/lurker and so I apologize in advance if this theory has been discussed already.

Since I love your tag, I'll post a response

I think this makes the most logical sense- I think that the whole 'suicide kit' that she busts out against the Reavers is for suicide in that case, but that isn't its purpose - I think she would have just OD'd on her medication before the Reavers got her (whatever that medicine might be for)-
Also, Inara is always desperate to get to the core planets- There are rich clients on moons, we've seen that, and we know she has plenty of cash and influence- My take on that is she needs to get to core worlds for supplies - Supplies of her meds, which as we see from other eps are hard to come by on the rim- Just a thought-

Thanks for the compliment, Robertson Davies is one of my fav authors.

I'm really enjoying the other thread about Inara - with the drug addiction theory but I just get the feeling that her statement to Simon was an insight into her real state of mind.

Sadly, we may never know for sure. I wonder if JW would ever consider putting out a book/magazine to tie up all the loose threads? I know I'd gorram well buy it.

Hmmm, interesting theory, Joss said that what we all thought was a suicide kit was in fact not for that purpose, but something else, and he wouldn't say what, because there was the possibility it might come up again, possibly in the forthcoming movie.

I like your theory, its good, but I would say that if she was dying of something, then she would want to live life to the fullest, go out and see more of it. So lurking in dark corners of the 'verse with a crminal, would not be the way to go. She would take a job in a public place in the midst of things, or she would have taken up one of the many offers she received from clients and live amongst her kind, the high society folk. I think it was something else that made her leave her career prosects behind of being in charge of her own house etc. Something more personal and ultimately more damaging.

Here's my theory. Inara left Sinon (sp) and the Chapterhouse because something happened, something with a man. She has said about all of them fleeing from something, I dont think it was anything criminal, I think she may have gotten close to someone, very close, a strong man and she lost him. He may have died or maybe he just betrayed her, or she was publicly humiliated by him and she fled. She swore never to get too close to another man again and take all clients as just that, her job, of course then she met Mal, someone who is so typically not her type, not cultured or particularly smart, and the unexpected happened. She found herself bound to him, to his strength as she put it, and unable to leave.

The whole 'suicide kit' thing, maybe it was something to induce a death-like state, so the Reavers might leave her alone, as she doesnt really want to die, as she said. Weak explanation of the syringe I know, but its all I can come up on short notice. I dont think it would be any kind of weapon, so I think its something for her, can't be sure what though. Hmmmmm.

I am very interested in that syringe. I have the very poor quality original pilot that circulated on kazaa for awhile so I might just have a gander to see if there's anything in there about that needle. Personally, I'm totally at a loss to explain the syringe if it's not a suicide injection.

But, I must point out that she was living her life in that manner - Top Level Chapterhouse on a beautiful planet - Fast Track to House Priestess etc. She chose to leave it all behind and head out into the black.

I don't know but that seems kind of unlike the Inara we know - but maybe that's why she is the way she is. I do think, however, that it wasn't anything public or overt b/c the people in her circle seem pretty well connected to each other. Remember Shindig (Persephone) - Inara stopped and spoke to several people by name. So if there was juicy gossip about her departure it would have been well circulated and might have affected her dealings with future clients. And Atherton was certainly superficial enough to not want to contract with a companion everyone gossips about. Dong ma?

The sad thing is that none of us know for sure and although speculation can be fun it would be nice to have at least *SOMETHING* to help guide us.

That said, I'm really liking the drug addiction angle - kind of that sad, heroine chic thing. Imagine: Inara is spoken to privately by the House Priestess and is told to leave or be exposed. And then not to return until clean and sober - hmmmm, OTOH, in the contol-freak core planets that may not hold water as I wonder if they'd try to dry her out themselves so as to avoid a public scandal? Maybe she escaped and the House let her go - again to avoid a scandal?

Oh I don't know! ...throws hands up in disgust...
