I have been trying to decipher what happens to be the correct layout of planets and moons in the 'verse. Some things, such as the roleplaying game's website, have the planets and moons all in one orbit around the same star/sun.

Other sources, such as page 117 of the official visual companion, have what looks like several systems, or something, and i'm not sure how to interpret it.

What is the correct/official depiction?

I'm not sure, but in the thread below, the money "Embers" posted from "The Bank Heist" is shown, and it has a solar system on it.

Seems that if this was their "Official money" then the solar-system/Planets on it are an as accurate representation as I've seen. Even though the planets are not labeled, and no moons are shown, it's a good starting point.

If you listened to the 14th Ep of the second season of "The Signal" (a Firefly/Serenity Podcast, 1 of 4 ff/s podcasts) they said in an early draft of Serenty (the movie) Joss wrote that there were 72 planets and moon. As for how many stars it's tough to say. If there was only one sun the outter planets would be very cold and that isn't something we've seen, unless they have some tech to generate the sun's light and heat or a way to collect and reflect the sun's light and heat. the RPG book shows a yellow star in the center of the 'Verse and at least one other star in it a red one but I don't recall if it has any planets around it and as I don't have it with me I can't look it up now. I'll look later and report back unless some one else looks it up.

Look a bit closer and you see that the inner orbit lacks planets while the fourth orbit out has two and you might want to rethink how accurate a representation it is.

As far as other evidence is concerned there is one graphic that seems to show many (6 or 7 it's kinda hard to be sure) suns each with a system of planets. It's on page 208 of the RPG and page 117 of the OVC. Now some people discount that picture since it wasn't clearly shown in the movie and it does look to be a rather dubious arrangement from a scientific point of view but the alternative of dozens of habitable worlds orbiting the one star is also very dubious scientifically speaking so it boils down to what seems least unreasonable to you. At least untill somebody in charge says one way or the other.

*I* didn't design the money Bro.. That's the ACTUAL Money THEY created for the Show. It was the money used in the Bank Heist.. I didn't have anything to do with the layout of the solar system, Money, or anything else.

All I am saying is, FROM THE MOVIE, THAT is the only clue we have to show how things are "Officially" laid out, even though it doesn't fit with everything from the Firefly Series, or even the Movie.
(And if you look closely, NONE of the rings have two planets on them.. that blotch on the left is part of the bill design that overlaps the ring... there's a blotch on the 5th ring on the right side that is part of the Conch shell design, again, overlapping the ring... of course I have a High Def Widescreen Monitor, so the detail may be clearer on my machine.)

In the Serenity Role Playing Game there is an image where there are several stars with several solar systems. So that money could be for a particular solar system and the reference to quadrant might be a different solar system, but then again this might not be cannon (if that's how that is spelled.)

That's about how I figured it... Because they seem to hint at "Other Systems" (note the plural).. and they never address the FTL issue, so we're left to guess if it's one system, or several solar systems clustered nearby.. Not much info on that other than the Quote at the start of the movie about, "We found a new solar system, dozens of planets and hundreds of moons"

There's surely not "Dozens of planets" shown on that money... but I did notice from the quote it says "Solar System", not the Plural "Systems".

I can't help but think that Joss HAD to have a map in his mind's eye since he "planned" to carry the season MUCH further than it actually went, and to do that, you kinda need a pretty detailed map (at least in your head) because fans remember time and distance from one planet to another so they'd have to keep track of that somehow.

Of course, that also depends on how you GET to those other places, sometimes they seem to want to fly above or below the elliptic (As in "Out of Gas"), and they seemed to get from the outer rim to the central Alliance hospital fast enough.

I thought at first that the planet shown in the weird elliptic (Last ring) might have been "Miranda", but I doubt they'd put that planet on the money if they were trying to keep it a secret..

Ahh, late night/early morning musings are such fun ;)

Actually Joss has said that there is no faster than light travel In the 'Verse. I would agree then that there can only be one star but you then have the problem with "outer planets" being to dark to support life. I think that in one of The Signal's Tech section they said that on full burn (as fast as ) Serenity can get from one side of the 'Verse in about 10 hours but I think the ship wouldn't last ten hours with her tail light up.

You also can't say that it will always take the same time to reach the same place. If I leave from Persephone to Boros at the begining of the year it might take 5 hours but by mid year it might take 20 hours and worse a year later it might be 3 days. A Solar system is in contant motion and planets move at different rates around the sun. One year on Lodinum might be a year and 5 months for Sihnon and a hundred years for an outer planet to go around the sun. Most planets orbit in an elipse not an exact circle. Time is very fluid.

I have a couple images that were posted here (though I think they're fan made) saved. If people want I can post them. They're a elaboration on the many systems map showing each one in detail but, like I said I don't think they're canon but hey, if you want to see them I'll put them up.

Didn't say you did.

And all I'm saying is maybe the depiction isn't meant to be an accurate depiction of the verse.

Plus this isn't the only clue we have in the movie. There is the classroom nightmare scene and the stuff on the bridge after River finds Miranda. None of that is conclusive to my mind either as neither instance seems to be trying to show it all.

Look at the picture posted above. Or if you have a copy of the OVC take a look at page 15 or 17 there is a much clearer image there. in the center is a star. It doesn't look like a real star but like an ornament star with all the spikey "rays" coming off. surrounding that is an elipse presumably representing an orbit but which doesn't have any representation of a planet. Surrounding that are two more elipses (one inside the other) each of which has a beveled dot presumably representing a planet. Surrounding that is an elipse that has two bevelled dots one on each side of the bill - one larger and surrounded by an elipse of it's own perhaps representing a gas giant planet with it's ring. Surrounding that is another elipse with a single bevelled dot which bisects two depictions of conch shells one to either side. Finally there is a tilted orbit with another planet.

That level of detail may not be imediately obvious even with HD-DVD but that is the way the 'verse's money looks per the OVC.
