Serenity Theme - Questions about instruments

I am a musician, composer, and obsessive Browncoat who has always been intrigued by the music of the show and the movie. One piece that especially interests me is the main theme from Serenity (track 3 on the soundtrack CD). At about 0:27 the track changes and this really cool sounding percussion that I have never heard before comes in. Does anyone here know what kind of percussion that is? I would be very interested in learning more about it.

Also there is a plucked string instrument that comes in at the same time, which I believe is either a mandolin or a bouzouki. However I am not entirely sure whether it is one of those, or something else. If anyone knows about this as well, that would be very cool too.
