February '04 bottom of page 18.

"Amazingly, Firefly performed better in its first season than Joss Whedon's other series, Buffy - but Fox saw fit to can it. The end result is another dimwitted short term view from Hollywood execs, and another excellent series condemned to culthood and a single complete season."...

Although they go on to compare it with "the superior Farscape" I will forgive them and not cancel my subscription.

Farscape was good, but I found myself liking Firefly better.. better sets, better FX's, Great writing... don't mistake my comment for my having said Farscape was slouchy in any of these areas.. I just liked Firefly much better. :O)

Boy, oh boy...with great trepidation...

I detest Farscape. Yup, you heard right. Not only that, but I hate SG1, and I thought all the Trek spinoffs were drek. Can't stand Babylon 5, nor anything remotely resembling "standard" scifi. And yet here comes Firefly, a show which actually has a fresh approach to Sci Fi, and it gets canned. Not to whip a dead horse (see username and tag line), but in the words of the inimitable Wash, "Course your sudden--but inevitable--betrayal." TV doesn't want the Next Big Thing. They just want to blender the Last Big Thing and hope you don't notice. I'll stop venting now.

Very cool.

It is great to see that nearly two months after the DVD release, we are still getting positive comments on the series and the set.

I think that the DVD set will go a long way toward adding to the fanbase and getting more interest in future Firefly projects.

Guilty as charged. To be truth*some* (god, what a great line), I just caught a couple eps and had done. I'm just not really that into Sci Fi as it is typically done. More into the Robert Heinlein/Philip K. Dick type of Sci Fi that turns your expectations on their ears. Which, incidentally, is what Firefly did for me. I'm not really dogging B5 per se, just didn't care for it personally. Not even slandering "typical" Sci Fi. Just not my cup of tea.

Well.. my point wasn't to rag on you for not having watch it, but more to suggest that you didn't understand what it was or what it became. Turning things on their ears is eactly what B5 was...

Thing is, Farscape and B5 resembled "standard" sci-fi, but weren't. Same with Firefly. Sf has always nodded, from an American angle, at the colonisation of the West. From a British point of view, empire building and empires crumbling seems to be a defining feature.

B5 had a fresh approach to TV Sci-Fi, the 5 year arc. Certainly after B5, it seemed to be that every show was brave enough to expect viewers to pay attention and tune in week to week - something that didn't really seem to exist in US SF before.

Aside from that, detest and don't stand away.

Interesting point on the American/British Sci Fi thing. Seems both countries reach into their past for inspiration for fiction set in the future. I'd say Star Wars is an exception to the American side though. And as far as not liking those shows, hey, it's a personal taste issue. Never much liked guys in latex and skin-tight clothing. But that's my personal taste. I got no quarrel with them that do.

Oops - you appear to be hiccupping

It is interesting to see how far in advance literary SF generally is (I seem to recall JMS mentioning that in some of his posts) - Foundation, The Demolished Man etc, are all themes that starting to appear in TV SF - the Psi-Corp and River respectively in the case of the latter.
