I didn't know this until I read it at fireflymovie.com. You can go to Hollywood Stock Exchange and actually buy stock in the movie. Apparently they actually look at stock price when deciding. Anyway, I have no idea how to do it, as I just found it myself, but I'm going back to read up on it.
Mostly I want to know what happens to your stock if they decide not to make the movie...but what the heck..a few shares wouldn't hurt...
Seems like this might be another way to show support - after buying the DVDs, spreading the word and recruiting more fans...

here's the page for the Firefly movie at Hollywood Stock Exchange:

Jokes on me!! from what I'm reading on that website, it's a game. But still looks interesting..so I'll join just for fun. a show of support is a show of support

Its actually more than just a game. It is my understanding that this is something Hollywood is starting to use to predict which movies to do, and which not.

Market research is always a dicey enterprise. Some ideas that sound great in the board room, end up not doing well at all in the theater. How to know whether a particular dream film will actually get enough buns in the seats to make it profitable, and which script is actually garbage, is a tough thing to gage before anything gets shot.

So, one can either risk a ton of studio money, and one's job and career, on a potential turkey, or, one can throw the question open to the market, and see what it says about the idea.

If the Hollywood Stock Exchange is successful at predicting winners and losers, then Hollywood can utilize that in deciding which films get made as well as how much to devote to such projects.

And there is a lot of reasons to suspect that it will. (Maybe not 100%, but still better than a Magic 8 Ball) Everybody knows something, and most folks know something about almost anything there is out there. The problem is getting that accumulated knowledge in a form that is usable.

You might buy stock because you love Firefly. Someone else because Nathan is a hottie, or Joss is a great writer/director. Some because it is simply a sci fi film and thinks the time is right for one. Some because they overheard a friend talk about how there were no good science fiction movies out there right now.

By using the market model, and having essentially those folks with opinions "bet" on it, (leaving the size of the bet up to the individual) Universal can look at those numbers see where the price goes, and decide, "Hmm... lets do this movie"

Even if they don't know all the reasons why anyone bought the stock, they do know that enough folks think its a good idea to bet their own money on it. And thus, more likely to make the movie, seeing as how the market responded to it.

"Wash, where is my damn spaceship?"

So... are you actually investing in anything (and spending real money) or not?

I just looked at the site, and it works like this:
1) It is free
2) It is a stock market simulation using movies and movie stars instead of IBM and Coca-Cola
3) You can join by providing your name and e-mail address
4) You will be issued "dollars" to invest in a portfolio of your choosing
5) As with the real stock market, the "price" of the stock is determined by how much people are willing to pay for it. Price thus indicates how popular or potentially profitable a property is
6) Movies still in the speculation stage, such as a "Firefly" movie, are listed on the exchange
7) There is no indication that this information is used for anything but our amusement, but who knows? Someone may be watching. I sure would if I was at the studios.
8) Organized or fraudulent "market manipulation" is forbidden. For that reason, the above information is provided for your education and enjoyment only. If you choose to join and invest in a favorite project, thus raising its "price", it is up to you
9)Have fun!
10) Nothing in the 'verse can stop me!

DREAMCATCHER

Hmm ..so why don't the marketing gurus set up an actual "will they spend money" test? I would buy a movie ticket today on speculation that the movie would actually be made and I would be at one of the first showings. Call them "First Row Spec Tickets" or something. Bet they'd sell out.

I bought 1000 shares of Firefly, too.

I also found under Funds, a Universal Studio fund, so I bought shares in it, too.

This could be very cool and even if it sounds silly, a way to kind of measure interest...
besides the DVD sales. I'd love to see what happened if all Firefly fans that post here, and any other sites you know, go and join HSX and buy stock in Firefly. Drive the stock up and show how much genuine interest and support there is for a movie.

Apparently people take this play stock very serious. The trader that manages the Universal Fund has a portfolio worth over $750 million...
even for fun, that's pretty impressive!

is it just me, or wouldn't this be pretty cool?
